Making an appointment was easy. I called and it rang a bit, so eventually I hung up, but within 10 minutes I got a phone call back (this seems to be their system) and was able to make an appointment. Upon arriving, I didn't have to wait 30+ minutes to see the doctor like happens with many of my other doctors (even when I have an appointment and arrive on time). The office staff did some eye testing and then I was called back with the doctor. This practice is Dr. Judith Schäfer and Dr. Roland Schäfer, and I saw the latter. I insisted we do the appointment in German, but Dr. Schäfer also speaks English, so he was able to tell me some of the phrases I didn't understand, and he was also very patient with me and my questions and comprehension. In the end, he sent me home with a trial pair and an appointment for the following week. I came back and when I gave him the go-ahead on the lenses, I walked out with a three-month supply. Recently, I had to get a refill, and I called ahead to make sure they had my lenses, which they set aside. I came in a couple days later, paid, and was on my way. This place makes going to the eye doctor easy and enjoyable.

I was at least told that the wait would be at least 40 minutes, so that I could go away do something else with my time and then come back for the appointment. The waiting room unfortunately had one annoying screaming 5 year old, but that's not really the fault of the doctor is it? The important thing is that Dr Schäfer was quite nice and put my mind at rest about the eye problem I had.

I first saw Dr. Kristine Kruse about a month ago. The male receptionist at the time was not particularly friendly (in fact, he hung up on me when I couldn't locate the office and called to ask for directions), but Dr. Kristine Kruse herself was pleasant and friendly. So when my eye problem returned three weeks later, I decided to give her office a second chance. It is important to note that at the time of my first visit I was privately insured. However, for reasons I don't quite understand, as part of my employment here in Berlin I had to forego my private health insurance in favor of "Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung", which would be akin to switching from private health insurance to Medicare or Medicaid in the United States. My German husband accompanied me on my visit to Dr. Kruse in case my German was not enough to communicate with the doctor, as well as to explain the change in my insurance status. Upon arrival we had to register at the front desk, which was being manned by Helde Kruse, Dr. Kristina Kruse's mother. From the moment we walked in it was is if we had personally insulted Frau Helde Kruse by our mere presence. The woman did not so much as greet us. She was UNbelievably unfriendly and rude; she didn't talk to us - she BARKED her questions at us, rolling her eyes and interrupting my husband each time he tried to communicate information to her, be it spelling my last name or explaining why we were there or my insurance situation. It was surreal. I repeat, I have never ever been treated like this either at a doctor's office or anywhere else. I got a glimpse of Dr. Kristine Kruse in the background. I am sure she was aware of what was going on. However, at no point in time did she come out and try to rein in her rude receptionist/cosmetologist-mother. Based on the mediocre reviews on yelp, as well as other websites, I wouldn't be surprised if she knew exactly what kind of reputation her practice has and didn't care. Well, I just hope that more people read these reviews and know NOT to go to Dr. Kruse, Jr. or Sr. My husband and I left without seeing the doctor. I am still shaking with rage at such uncalled for rudeness and disrespect!
