Physical therapy told my husband and I that I would never walk again and stated that I really neededto be trained to live in a wheelchair. To make a long story Short, I am now an outpatient physical therapy. Though I spend time in a wheelchair, I am learning to walk and will be able to do so with a walker independently. Additionally, the medical Director came to my husband and I and told us that I was dying, and should be placed on hospice. that was two years ago. All of my doctors are completely confused as to why he would've came to that conclusion. When we refused hospice, and refused to accept that I could not be taught more independent living, they discharged me. The facility itself is beautiful. It is clean and well-managed. However, they did not provide what I needed from them. Have they done so, I believe that I would be further along than I am now. Again, the good news is that I am progressing dramatically at this point.

It was arranged for her to go to Lorien Mays Chapel. I am writing to tell you that Lorien Mays Chapel was very disappointing and that my mother dramatically deteriorated there. Although they say the right things and have a lot of staff with all sorts of titles, they are really not set up to manage elderly women with dementia. They put her on a vigorous regimen of PT and OT which wore her out and there appeared to be a complete disconnect between their administrative staff like the dietician and their floor staff. In fact, the latter were more concerned about their break times and getting food from the small luncheonette there than with my mother. Lorien Mays Chapel has a good reputation and I think that for relatively healthy young to middle aged men or women who just need a little PT or OT, it is probably fine. However, for older individuals who need more care and attention, in addition to PT and OT, Lorien is not the place to send them. Seeing my mother deteriorate so quickly at Lorien, we managed to get her out of there relatively quickly - weak, very disoriented, and on oxygen 24/7. After returning back to her assisted living facility where they are better setup for her issues, she is much stronger and active again.

I called several home care providers who told me it would take as many as five days to find care givers. I needed someone to drive me home and begin care the next day. We Care could provide what I needed. They helped me complete the necessary forms, line by line. I was extremley anxious about being home. Diane and Sonia were able to support and encourage me through my anxious moments. They provided both physical and emotional support as I adjusted to being home. In addition, all my laundry was done, my bed changed, dishes washed, and my meals were prepared. They both went "above and beyond". I valued their companionship as I adjusted to being on my own. They became like surrogate family members, and I appreciate their caring and kindness above all.

GNA ratios reportedly average 1:15, making adequate patient care nearly impossible. Nurses often appear more focused on congregating at the nurses' station or visiting other units than working together as a team. Cleanliness throughout the facility is subpar, food quality is less than desirable, and basic supplies are frequently unavailable. Families should be prepared for bedridden or two-person assist patients to remain in soiled clothing or bedding for extended periods before receiving help. This environment raises serious concerns about dignity, hygiene, patient safety, and overall quality of care.

It…read morewas the middle ground between the hospital and being well enough to come home as she basically had to learn how to walk again. All things considered, our family was pleased with the facility. Not quite 100% pleased. More like 80%. Rehab/Staff: The physical and occupational therapists were fantastic. They were much better compared to the PT and OT services at the hospital. They had daily events like board games and ice cream socials which my mom enjoyed even if they were kind of lame and boring. It helped her meet people at the facility and encouraged her to leave her room beyond her PT and OT. The nurses and staff were dedicated and helpful. I remember a few nights when it was snowing the nurses came in several hours before their shift just to be on the safe side. Much appreciated! CDiff: While the rehab staff and services were great, on the flip side, my mom unfortunately became incredibly ill the day before she was initially supposed to be discharged. Turns out she caught CDiff from the patient in the room next door. Everyone in their wing of the facility were then infected. Not only did this prolong her discharge for over a week but it was so bad she was admitted to another local hospital several weeks after she was discharged because the treatment at this facility was basically useless. Food: My mom was also really impressed with their food although they didn't have the specific dietary restriction options one would expect with this sort of rehabilitation facility where quite a few people are transferred directly from hospitals. For example, my mom had to be on a very strict low sodium diet. Whenever we inquired about sodium levels in certain foods the staff was clueless. Visitors: The lounge spaces are comfortable and filled with magazines and board games for patients and their visitors. That was a nice touch. The food for visitors wasn't as impressive as the food for patients. They have a "restaurant" where you can eat and visit with your friends and family while you're there. The menu is actually pretty awesome but the system is beyond backwards. You have to go to the front desk (reception for the entire facility) and fill out an old school check (think 60's diner) with specifically what you're going to order. Then you either give it to them or drop it off at the restaurant before dinner hours. Thennnnn when you actually sit down at the restaurant the wait stuff takes your order and still seems confused given this whole process. It seems beyond duplicative. After two attempts it was too much of a hassle. From that point on we decided to bring in our own food from local restaurants and eat in the lounge with my mom. So much better! Ambiance: This place needs a major makeover. My mom is in her 60's, she's not 100. While the staff was lovely the aesthetics here are sterile and unwelcoming; particularly for those who come here from a hospital. I had to bring a plethora of things from home to help my mom feel comfortable and a bit more at home. Otherwise it felt way too institutionalized. Like a mix between a prison and an elementary school cafeteria. The recliners in each room were partially out of commission due to a fire hazard recall. Typically I wouldn't care much about this sort of thing but getting out of bed and just sitting in a reclining chair was a huge accomplishment for my mom the first week or so she was there. Not being able to move the chair kind of defeated the whole point of it being a special chair intended for rehabilitation!

When you think of a retirement community you may be one of the people that thinks of a sad place where people are put to be forgotten. That's certainly not the case at all with Edenwald. It felt like a bustling community to me. More than once I thought "I wouldn't mind ending up at a place like this someday." Security wise there is a person manning the front desk at all hours of the day. Ask that person for the guest Wi-Fi password. There is a lobby where you can sit and wait for people where there is also a gift store. I didn't see it but apparently they have a fitness center and pool here. On the activity board they have a listing of all the activities that are taking place on site. They also offer multiple day trips to interesting sites around the area. If you don't want to drive to do errands they will take you places such as Trader Joe's. They have multiple restaurants on site. I got to sample two of them. One of them was a casual cafeteria. The other one was what we called "the pub", which serves alcohol. There is also a fancy pants restaurant across from the pub, but they enforce a dress code. I wasn't doing backflips over the food, but it was much better than I expected and I enjoyed my meals. I thought the nicest thing about the living quarters was that once you go inside and close your door it just feels like an apartment. You have a fully stocked kitchen, which is nice. Even though you have your privacy there are ways in the bathroom and bedroom to alert the staff that you need help. All the amenities in the world wouldn't matter if the people weren't treated right. I have to say I was constantly interacting with friendly people. Multiple times on the elevator the residents would be cracking me up. One man told me that he hoped I wasn't going to the 25th floor because that was his private penthouse. If you have an aging relative who wants their independence but could use the safety/security of assisted-living I can't think of a better place then Edenwald.

My dad was receiving hospice care for two weeks when one night he was singing/interacting with his grandkids when my sister and mom noticed he was getting tired and his breathing became somewhat labored. The hospice nurse came in and said he needed morphine to control his respirations. Both my mom and sister expressed hesitations and concerns. However, in response, the nurse repeatedly stated how much experience she has had with hospice care, and that she has seen "all of this before." He was talked about like he was just another hospice case, rather than a person whose clinical history our family has expertise with. Overnight my dad kept getting his morphine increased. My dad never regained full consciousness, and he was dead two days later. Over those last two days, our family had frequent interactions and conversations with the hospice team, including a nurse supervisor. No one in our family felt heard or listened to. We wanted to stop the morphine to see if my dad bounced back, but the hospice folks told us we should be administering it every two hours, and attempted to shame us into administering it. One nurse insistently argued with my sister about the time of his last dose, even though my sister had spent the night with my dad and recorded every medication and time of administration. We were also promised a chest x-ray that never materialized. The Gilchrist hospice team repeatedly espoused how morphine "gets a bad rap," and we felt as if we were being bullied into continuing its administration. At one point the nurse supervisor said to me "is your dad's comfort not your main concern? Because maybe you should send him to the hospital then." I responded by asking "are you telling me our choices are morphine or the hospital? Because my understanding is that morphine administration is PRN and up to the family's discretion." Once again, during this conversation, my feelings and concerns were not being heard or supported. I just heard about her extensive hospice experience. The focus was on her and the team's experience, instead of my dad/family's wishes and feelings. From what I had heard, hospice's role was to support and guide us through my dad's end of life, but it turned out that 1) our voices and feelings were discounted/ignored, 2) we were strong-armed into adopting their beliefs, and 3) the experience quite possibly hastened my dad's passing. Moreover, no one from Gilchrist was there when my dad passed, and three days have gone by and no one from Gilchrist has reached out to my mother to offer their condolences. I'm sure that others have had a much different hospice experience, but please beware when it comes to Gilchrist.

During those four days, my mother and I were responsible for all care, including repositioning him and managing his hygiene, despite being physically unable to safely turn him. Repeated calls to the nurse line did not result in meaningful support, and assistance only came after multiple escalations. When my father began actively dying, I contacted the hospice nurse for guidance as he appeared to be gasping for air and in a lot of pain. The nurse initially answered and disconnected the call. When I called back, I was told, "What do you want? I'm busy." When I asked about medication, I was told, "You can't kill him." We were given a medication kit but no written instructions, which made it extremely difficult to manage his symptoms with confidence during a highly stressful and emotional situation. Staff also made comments in front of my father about his impending death in a way that felt inconsistent with maintaining dignity, despite acknowledging that hearing is the last to go. When the nurse arrived after his passing, the first comment made upon entering our home was, "Are you happy now?" (I'm finally here) We were told bereavement support would be available, but no follow-up occurred, and we were unable to reach the social worker. My father chose this hospice in part for its Catholic affiliation, but despite multiple attempts, no priest came to provide last rites. We ultimately had to find one ourselves. This experience was extremely difficult for our family and did not reflect the level of support we expected during end-of-life care. If you want your family member to die with dignity and to be treated like a human being - do not use Stella Maris.
