We took the Loop Trail more or less along the shoreline to see the small and large flowerpots. This is the Easy Trail. There are picnic tables along the trail. The next stop was up a few flights of stairs to see the cave. Then onwards to the light station and lightkeeper's cottages. Unfortunately, we went during shoulder season (not during summer), and the cottages were closed for the season. There are many Muskoka chairs there to sit on and take in the beautiful scenery. Instead of backtracking along the same trail, we decided to continue the Loop Trail through the interior portion of the island. This is considered the Difficult Trail. It's described as rugged on the Parks Canada website (https://parks.canada.ca/amnc-nmca/on/fathomfive/activ/flowerpot) and there were definitely lots of huge rocks directly in the trail path and steeper sections with lots of stairs. Just before getting back to Beachy Cove, there's a Moderate Trail (Marl Trail). There are six campsites available on the island, and they have tent platforms. The campsites are spaced decently apart, so there is privacy from one another.

Takes a bit of planning ahead to catch a ferry ride here, but once you arrive, exploring this…read moreisland is pretty self-explanatory. Most people take the Loop Trail hugging the coastline to and from the Lightstation. If you walk with purpose, you'll be able to go out and back within an hour. There's also plenty of places along the coast to rest and admire the rock pillars and the water.

There are two main structures, a keeper's dwelling and a light tower. The light tower is about 30 feet tall; and for a small fee - you can ascend to the top and see Lake Huron and the surrounding area. You can also tour the old keeper's dwelling - there's some museum artifacts and gift shop - and it is free. On the grounds, you can ring the bell they have there - it touts itself at 3425 pounds, bigger that the Liberty Bell at 2080 pounds. You can walk out into Lake Huron. There's also old style "stocks" for a fun photo opp. New: Built in 1870, it replaced the 1840 harbor light. There are three main structures; the museum; keeper's house, and light tower. The light station grounds also have a playground, picnic area, nature trails, and a covered area at the tip of the peninsula for viewing. The museum building is free; for a small fee - you can ascend to the top of the tower - 130 steps - phenomenal view. If you get there in the summer between 11:00-4:00 - can tour the keeper's house - restored to about 110 years ago We hiked to the top; did the museum, took in the views - and spent 90 minutes between it all.

Stuff for kids - hands on game; area to climb through with tubes, slides, etc... a boat about to be shipwrecked complete with audio. Takes about an hour or a little more. We also did the shipwreck tour... 2 hours - well worth it - need to get lucky enough for a sunny day. Saw 4 wrecks via a glass-bottom boat; guides very knowledgeable and easy to approach. The Captain added some commentary; but we couldn't hear him through the audio. Tour is in Thunder Bay - just outside Alpena - you leave from the museum. Tours are at 10:00, 1:00 and, 4:00 My recommendation - get there 90 minutes before the shipwreck tour - tour the museum, take the tour - and stop in the gift shop on the way out. We got there at 11:30 and left at 3:15. ------------- p.s. - Yelp also has something for the Great Lakes Maritime Museum - it is the same place as this.

Wonderful National treasure. The movies were excellent and the boat ride great…read more Only recommendation I would have is that it would be great to have more exhibits in the museum. Maybe you could have a curator who would work with divers to find treasures hidden in private collections.
