Last year, I moved into my first flat alone in Withington. Solo. No flatmates. I was a bit lonely,…read morenaturally, with the boyf living in a different city and all my mates living in Manchester city centre. I decided that the only thing for it was to get a cat and thus cement myself in my friends' collective consciousness as their gin-soaked mad aunt. The first place I went was the Yew Tree vet surgery, as I knew they'd have a list of rescue centres, and they did. I made plans to visit one or two, but then by chance found Alan (nee 'Taz') going free to a good home, from a good home. Instantly, I loved him. Instantly, he loved getting under my feet. It was truly special. Then I noticed that Alan wasn't eating much and seemed pretty sluggish. Obviously I did what any normal cat owner would do. I cried, I panicked, I lambasted myself for being a rubbish cat parent. I went to the vets. The service we got at Yew Tree was fantastic. I burst in with my cat carrier and lay prostrate at the receptionist's feet "I am awful!" I wailed "my cat is ILL!" James the vet was lovely and calmed Alan down instantly, with some sort of vet magic, did a thorough once over and pinpointed the problem instantly. 20 minutes later, with a prescription, all of Alan's vaccines etc, a charity catnip toy and the advice "Do not feed your cat Go-Cat, it is MacDonalds for cats!!!" ringing in my ears, I was off home, happy again, and not crying. I know that it doesn't seem much; cat ill, vet see cat, cat get better, but as pet owners know, it is so important to know that there's a vet you can trust. The Yew Tree vet surgery is a great place to go. As well as saving your fluffy friend's life, they sell a great range of healthy vet-approved pet foods, and animal toys, a lot of which are charity affiliated. Even now that we've moved into the city centre, we still make the journey into Withington when Alan needs a check up, because we know we can trust them to be thorough and professional, and nice to the cat.

What if I've been a really bad owner and not known it? All these things were running through my head when young three month old Phoebe was popped in her pet carrier and taken to Withington's Yew Tree vet today. First of all, I love dogs and I love cats. But good lord, this is where dogs have the advantage. Most travel so well, and they're usually keen to meet new people so the strange man with the big needle doesn't seem in the least bit threatening. Cats, well, they're the misanthrope of the animal world. They adore a few select people but it takes a while to make friends with them. Now, Phoebe likes her cat carrier, for sure, which is a huge positive for a kitten... but she doesn't like being contained and she does NOT like engine noise. So here we were, taking what is normally rather a nervous, skittish and anxious kitten to an unfamiliar place in a now more heightened state of nervousness, skittishness and anxiety. Great. Just what on earth was going to happen on that table. I needn't have worried. Not only do you get a warm, lovely, friendly welcome at the reception desk, you get James. He's amazing. He's seen it all - nervous cats, cats who are phobic of everything from bins to bags to binbags to doors to shoes... like mine, angry cats, evil cats... he has one of his own. Our kitten was very healthy, he checked her over 100% and asked lots of questions about her behaviour and diet. We got tons of great advice about cat food and what little Phoebe would be needing in terms of shots and whatnot over the coming weeks. You can't put a price on a good vet, and now that there's a feline in our lives we're even happier we're moving closer to this establishment. Yay to the Yew Tree vets!

It was very distressing for me and Ruby, but the vets there reassured me that she would be ok, and treated Ruby with lots of love! My mum's dog, Bonnie was very old and had cancer. We had to take her to the vets regularly, but we always felt much better leaving with the advice and kind words that the staff there gave us. When her time came, and we made the decision to have her put to sleep, Jonathan the vet was brilliant with us. He helped make Bonnie feel calm in her last moments and he was so kind and understanding with us. It really helped us come to terms with our loss, knowing that she died in peace and with her family with her. I always recommend this vets surgery to anyone with pets.

Pippa has had standard vaccinations, a routine operation and has had to be seen twice urgently. Once, when she was sick and once when she cut her paw. On both of these occasions, Pippa was seen quickly and treated accordingly. We don't have pet insurance but so far the charges haven't been unreasonable. They also sell pet food and other standard items for your pet, like Frontline or worming tablets. The receptionists are always accommodating and have offered us invaluable advice (as we were new to owning a dog). There is free parking at the rear and we are never kept waiting long/ I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this vet if you want the best care for your pet. The vet always remembers Pippa and refers to her by name, which is a nice personal touch. They are also open on a Saturday morning.

I trust the staff to pick up on any issues my cat might have and she's willing to explore the examination room at times as well now. Last Christmas she required a dental operation and I felt that I was advised well on it and the price charged was fair. Her aftercare was explained to me along with a check-up a week later where we discussed how to prevent a reoccurrence of a similar issue again. She continues to have regular check-ups on their vet plan along with vaccinations, flea & worm treatment which is easy to arrange collection of between her 6 monthly general check-ups. I plan to keep going here for my pets health needs as long as I live in the area.

Well, Wendy's definitely not about still, this place is owned by a man called Philip Bareham and…read morehis wife Laura, information within the public domain, see companies House. As I'm writing this, I have to remind myself I'm writing about a veterinary practice and not the local authority or even worse a shady lTory MP. A reasonable comparison based on the fact that rather than just do the right thing and let common sense prevail, Phillip Barehams vets aka Wendy Lanes would rather hide behind policies and extract maximum power from their position, which sadly they ultimately hold over our beloved pets. So, the background to this, which I'll try and keep as short as possible. Our beloved pet happens to a very beautiful pug, who like many pugs, has breathing issues and also becomes very anxious visiting the vets. Our pugs anxiety whilst visiting the vets results in excessive panting and was so severe last year his life became at risk and Phillips vets had to administer an emergency sedative, it was touch and go but our pet survived, anyone who loves their dog will understand how traumatic this was. The next part of the background to this is our pug has recurring ear infections as a result of allergies, this is managed by steroid tablets, although not ideal due to side effects, and ear drops. Unfortunately now and again the ear infection requires some extra help with anti biotics. So a few month ago we had a discussion with one of the vets, who I won't name because she was actually quite pleasant. We discussed that during the summer months when temperatures are higher that our dog will only come down in a dire emergency and that if he required any meds a telephone consultation would be better for our pets health and well being. Fast forward to September, it's still summer btw, and obviously we have just been through a week long heatwave. Our pet sadly requires sine anti biotics as he's suffering from an ear infection, cue a phone call to Phillips vets aka Wendy Lanes. I spoke to a receptionist who again I won't name, I explained the above and I was informed it might not be a possible due to a policy, I informed the receptionist I'm aware of that but our pet falls under the 'exceptional circumstances' umbrella and should be ok. The receptionist asked me to send a video clip and photograph of the ear infection, after a little deliberation of how exactly you do that, we sent a video of our dog suffering with excessive head shaking and hoped that this would be enough for Phillips place aka Wendy Lanes. A day passed, no response, my dog continued to suffer with his ear infection. I made a phone call, spoke to another receptionist, asked what was happening. Was told, I'll ask the vet who's in now and ring you back. Phone rings, sounds like a different voice to the last but I may be wrong, I'm assuming another receptionist, definitely not a vet. She says "I've asked the vet, they've said no due to a policy, we can't do it" my response was to explain the above about our pet. "Nope it's the law, we can't do it" I replied again and explained it's not a law, it's a policy, it's up to the vets discretion, you can give the anti biotics in exceptional circumstances. "No it's the law" I was told again. I explained again it's not the law it's a policy. "You can't speak to me like this" I'm going to end the call and get "Phil" the owner to ring you Thursday (today) So Phillip rings, a cockney or southerner anyway, who'd I'd already been warned was the owner, I was polite said hello, wasn't reciprocated. So for the next 5 mins or so I plead my poorly dogs case, begging for the cure, Phillip never tried to intervene never said a word, he let me beg. Once I'd finished, Phillips response arrived, I was expecting to discuss my pet, he never mentioned him. This isn't a direct quote but it was along the lines of, you've been very nice today but you wasn't yesterday, I'll be writing to you, you've got 30 days to find a new Vets, you and your poorly dog don't come back here. This felt personal, I don't know who I'd spoken to on the phone that lead to Philips call, but whoever it was, Phillip cares far more about them that any of our pets, which probably isn't much.

She had cancer in her ears and her nose :( Yes it was sad and she needed her ears taking off, but the help Mr Jennings gave was brill. So when I moved out, even before I had a kettle, I went down to the cats home and rescued my new best friend Phoebe and registered her at Manchester Street Vets. Every year she has her booster and wormer and I buy the anti- flea treatment from here too. Luckily we have never had any problems with Phoebe, other than a slight weight problem. So since Christmas we visited once every two weeks, now once a month, for Fat Club as I like to call it. It's really called Weight Clinic but since I do Weight Watchers, our Mondays are now Fat Club Day! Fat Club is a free service to all pet owners, where the vet nurse offers advice and help on overweight/ underweight animals and so far it is working. Debbie is our personal vet nurse and she is lovely. At first Phoebe hated getting in her carry case even though its a luxurious leather one with a luxuriously soft blanket inside, but now we don;t have a problem and when we arrive she strolls out and gets herself comfy on the scales! Debbie's help has helped me help Phoebe loose approx 500g - doesn't sound much but it's 10% off her total weight. The only downside to the surgery that I have found is the lady on the reception desk, she seems quite tactless. Whilst waiting to book another appointment, there was an elderly couple who had obviously just been told their precious dog was going to be put to sleep. They wanted to know how much it cost but couldn't say the words out of fear of crying, and the lady behind the desk was just being a bit insensitive. However, this doesn't bring down the services which the trained vets and vet nurses provide here.
