The lighthouse, and the surrounding buildings (museum, gift shop, etc), are a lovely monument to all of the lives lost in shipwrecks in Superior. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in particular is really fascinating and worth a visit. There are also lots of great trails to hike and wander through around the complex, and some really wonderful bird watching spots to boot. It's worth a stop no matter what amount of time you're working with. If you have a half hour, wander up and down the beach for a bit. Got more time? You can spend a few hours digging into the history and the artifacts in the buildings and the lighthouse. They also offer overnight accommodations in the crew's quarters (but you'll have to call ahead and book in advance for that). History and nature buffs will love this spot, for sure.

Point Iroquois Lighthouse sits on the shores of Lake Superior, lighting the entrance to the channel…read morethat leads to the Soo Locks and the St. Mary's River and is staffed with friendly people who love it! The building and grounds have been beautifully restored to original condition, complete with a small museum of lighthouse-keeping and gift shop inside. This light is easy to reach, just a gorgeous drive along Lake Superior's shoreline, paved road, paved parking lot, wooden walkways from the lighthouse to the shore of the big lake, allowing for photos from multiple vantage points. There are 72 steps curving round and round in a tightly woven spiral climaxing in a wide open circular balcony at the tip top of the lighthouse tower. Views of Lake Superior and the surrounding Hiawatha National Forest are spectacular! But do not neglect this historic treat if you cannot climb the tower! The building, grounds, museum, and big lake are worth the trip! (Disclaimer: this is my favorite lighthouse in the whole world, having fallen in love with it when I was a child and it was an abandoned "haunted" lighthouse. In 2013, my husband and I bought our dream house one mile from this location! Don't miss it!)

Whatta sight! On an island full of beautiful geological formations, Arch Rock stands out from the…read moreothers because it overlooks the water and spans at least 50 feet. It's a beautiful rock! You'll want to make the effort to get up the hill to see it. You can walk up to Arch Rock, but keep in mind that it's all uphill! Or you can bike (again, uphill) or do what I did and take a horse-drawn carriage. Arch Rock, and the adjacent Milliken Nature Center are one of the stops on the horse carriage tours. You only get about 15 minutes to check it out, but how much time do you need to look at a rock formation, no matter how pretty it is? There's a deck that takes you out a little closer to Arch Rock, and from here, you can take lots of beautiful photos of the water peeking through Arch Rock.

It's part of a route that runs along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan around Harbor Springs and it's super calm, has a rural/rustic vibe, and is just generally a really nice drive. It's also in the vicinity of the Good Hart General Store, so if you head this way you'll get a chance to stop there and check out their goods as well. Check it out if you're in the area or passing through. It's worth it!

I was there at the very end of September and they had just started to turn. Peak was going to be in about two weeks however people told me had we waited until peak it would've been bumper-to-bumper. Traffic flowed nicely and it was just a beautiful. Highlights were Legs Inn, a few coffee shops that had some random farmers markets and just the beauty of the trees! I would definitely do this again it didn't matter what time of the year it is!

Completed in 1962 the 1.8 mile long roadway is advertised at 145' high with a minimum 124' clearance over the waterway below. The speed limit is 50 Canadian (30 American) so relax and enjoy the view because it is just that good. BTW: The bridge is rumored to be open to foot traffic one day each year near the July 1th Canadian holiday so dig out your passport and take a hike :-)

Marie, MI. Gigantic ships and super-freighters can make their way through the Soo Locks, going either way to the Great Lakes, and the pubic can watch on expansive viewing decks. One yelper has written that the whole thing is very cool to witness. I agree wholeheartedly. I'm not sure that I can explain the particulars. Go see for yourself. If you're ever in Sault Ste, Marie, take the time to do this. It's so worth it, and, drumroll, please, IT'S FREE! Thank you to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the city of Sault Ste. Marie and the state of Michigan for allowing the public to be a part of this awe-inspiring operation.

There is a phone number on their website that you can call periodically to see if they have any scheduled ships coming through. The visitor center looks to have a scavenger hunt of type for the kids, so make sure to pick that up. There are some fun exhibits in here, some hands-on type activities. Also make sure to check out the small museum in the out building, it's not large, but there were some interesting pieces in there from a variety of ships and a gift shop

If you are in St. Ignace, you should stop at this interesting museum of Ojibwa and Native American…read moreculture. There are both inside and outside exhibits. They tell the story of missionary Jacques Marquette and the Ojibwa culture. No admission fee, though they suggest a donation. Once entering, there is a short video to kick off your visit. There was quite a lot of information on the boarding schools as well as Native Americans' role in the military through the years. I found this all very interesting and learned a lot during the visit. There is also a small gift shop with handmade crafts, art and jewelry

For example, you can stroll around in scenic Father Marquette Park with displays about his life. On the Museum grounds is the site where Marquette's French Jesuit Mission was located, where he lived, and where he was buried. Marquette established the French mission around 1671 as the area became a center of the flourishing fur trade. The old St. Ignace Mission is beautiful. Around the grounds, I saw plenty of displays of the area's Indian heritage, stylized statues of a Medicine Man, Indian Maiden, and several stuffed animal displays alongside plaques of the animal's Indian name. So if you're ever engaged in a bar bet about the Ojibwe name for a deer, you can confidently say "Wawashesh'she". There's also plenty of indoor and outdoor exhibits to grab a glimpse of Ojibwa culture and the lifestyles of the Huron Indians. Walking the Museum's beautiful grounds was relaxing, peaceful, and very educational.

The park offers an educational demonstration of the historic sawmill. It was very interesting. For an extra fee you can purchase the guided adventure tour which includes the rock climbing wall, a walk across a suspension foot bridge and a zip line. It's a nice place to take a nature walk along the paths and boardwalks. There is a small playground for little kids. There is a 50 foot tower that the rock climbing wall is attached to. You can climb the stairs of this tower to the observation deck on top and there is a beautiful view of there. You can see Mackinac Bridge on a clear day. We enjoyed our visit very much.

The park offers various educational programs and experiences throughout the months, has a unique gift shop (the staff was great as well), and has several walking trails to enjoy. I love that you can learn on your walk by reading the various signs posted. It would be fun if they did an educational scavenger hunt on their educational trail, as that would be a fun way to learn. I look forward to visiting again in another month!

It's just a short drive from Mackinaw City and this place has been on our bucket list for a few…read moreyears. The place is nice but it is not exactly what we were expecting. The path is well marked with red lights (no white lights allowed). They do have bathrooms there too. It just felt a little underwhelming and over populated (and we went on a cold fall night). Some people were packing in wagons and had flashlights which was annoying since the white light ruins your eyes when they are adjusted to the dark.
