Rice Park is another one of those things, with its pretty twinkling lights... and the majestic Landmark Center backdrop doesn't hurt either. Together, WinterSkate comes to life as an outdoor rink right in the middle of St. Paul. This year, it's open from Nov. 26 to Feb. 5. They have a warming house for changing your skates and staying cozy. The rink itself isn't huge, but I basically just need room to lurch around like a Frankenstein and then fall... so I'm good. Best part aside from the fact that you have an instant date-night? Skate rentals are only $2 and the rink itself is FREE. So what are you waiting for? Oh yeah, winter has to come first. Thanks, Wells Fargo, for making winter a little more fun!

It's a free city event where you have the opportunity to see local figure skaters cut loose on fresh ice. After that, you can wander across the street for live musical entertainment. You can get a first glimpse of the upcoming year's winter carnival button -- and watch the official lighting of the Holiday tree (and all the other trees) in Rice Park, accompanied by fireworks. A perfect holiday night. Rice park is the perfect strolling park when you're on a date at the Ordway, Riverwalk Center, Xcel Center, or anywhere else in downtown St Paul. The skating rink also makes it a great stand-alone family destination in the winter from November (when the rink opens) to the new year when Rice Park hosts the annual Ice Castle.

The concession stand was good, we ordered a couple of items from there including drinks and nachos. To get away from the chilly temps, we liked the above (2nd floor) lookout.

The basics: single indoor ice sheet, seating on one side, heated lobby, locker rooms, bonus outdoor second sheet of ice with "indoor" boards just steps out back. Several things make this arena notable. *the outside is green, which you quickly forget once inside (see point 2 below), so when you arrive here for the first time look for the "Green Monster" arena building. *Great painting of team colors all over the place in orange and black for their Tigers. *outside rink outback with real hockey boards and glass. No stands, just stand in the snow. *Small heated lobby with some booth seating and occasion concessions. *indoor second level "suite" area is a small space upstairs above lobby with seating, classic photos and paintings all behind the glass overlooking one corner of the arena. This space is cozy. *the score box is an elevated secure space perched above the penalty boxes and I've been inside... it's heated and awesome. *I was told the main seating area is rather cold (yes even for an ice arena) and the above heaters may not have been on during our game. *one mystery for my next visit is the far corner of the arena. This area looks like it was walled off for storage or lockers. And then someone said, let's make a deck on top of that. This looks like a fun place to watch a game, the second level area has deck fence up there, but I didn't see a way up there and suppose that was intentional to keep people like me out. *One final thing I enjoy was they drive the zamboni half a block away and dump out the scrapped ice in a nearby park. Seriously, how often do you see a zamboni driving down the street past a bunch of parked cars?
