Our family member went through many years of depression due to a loss of a spouse resulting in sitting in front of TV on a day basis, which previously was the most active individual in their age group. We found a large assisted living place that in the beginning and saw some improvement, however within 7 months it got worse than before she left home. I hated to wake up and look at my phone because I was getting messages of falls, emergency hospital visits, and the list goes on. So, the family started having long conference calls every weekend on what to do? I decided to come to LA for about 5 days and find a place. I got a list of referrals and visited consistently some places more than once trying to make myself feel this is the right one. One day before leaving empty handed, I contacted Connections who set up an appointment with Rita the next morning before heading back home. Right off when you walk up to the property it looks like it is residential and blends nicely in the neighborhood, i.e. not big ugly signs. Next, you are greeted with Rita's smile, I am thinking please help us. She calm and warm. Her property inside and out is nicely maintained, and it was not overwhelming. I felt this was right. The sign for me was there, Rita had a spot and after the evaluation said the first thing is to get her eating. And a little over a month she is eating and smiling again, OK she does have her moments, but that has always been there. Still look at my phone first thing, but no messages except good ones. We were all prepared for the end, and Rita along with her group have put our family member what looks to be another chapter.

Special requests are catered for and I have never heard the word "no" come from the staff or owner. Making a decision for senior care is a difficult one, especially in cases of memory loss and the onset of dementia. Shalom Garden is a spotlessly clean, very professionally run, small care facility that has made it possible for me to sleep much better at night knowing that my Mom is receiving such a high level of care. At first, we arranged companion care, which included medication reminders, transportation to appointments, and, just as importantly, having someone there to keep him company. As he improved and became more independent, the agency was able to adjust the level of care accordingly. We eventually moved to On Demand Care, primarily for transportation to appointments. I really appreciated that the care evolved with his needs rather than keeping him at a level of service he no longer required. The flexibility to adjust the care as his needs changed was incredibly valuable to us. Most of the caregivers were people he genuinely liked. They were consistently on time, respectful, helpful, and patient with him. Some personalities were a better fit than others, which is natural, but overall he was comfortable with them. I know he would be happy to see many of them if he ran into them out in public. What gave me the most peace of mind was knowing that the caregivers had been vetted through the agency and that I had someone to turn to if an issue ever came up. I communicated with the agency by text, phone, and email, and they were consistently responsive, respectful, and timely. If I had a concern or needed something addressed, they communicated with the caregiver directly. I never felt like I was left to figure things out on my own. I will admit that I was a little unsure in the beginning because of how professional they were. I have been disappointed and, frankly, burned by service providers in the past, so I was cautious. But this agency turned out to be the most prompt, punctual, and professional agency I have ever worked with. The administrators, health, care and support staff are truly impressive. The director, Judah is fantastic. He is very knowledgeable, compassionate and KNOWS every resident.
