Ready for children's theatre beyond the binary? Brain Surgeon Theater puts creative control in the hands of young artists to manifest a performing arts learning environment built on ensemble, discipline, and creativity.
Brain Surgeon Theater is an ensemble of artist-educators that has been collaborating since 2006. Our core group of theatre artists, musicians, choreographers, and filmmakers facilitates our highly creative summer camps, birthday parties, afterschool programming, weekend intensives, and day-off events.
Brain Surgeon artists are professionals in our fields, and we consider the teaching we do to be part of our artistic practice. Creative thinking, teamwork, hard work and play are the foundation of both our own work as artists and the way we teach.
History
Established in 2006.
Brain Surgeon Theater began as a small theatre camp in Arlington, Massachusetts and the first Brain Surgeon devised rock musical was born. The following summer, it happened again, this time resulting in a musical called "CAVES!" about spelunkers, scientists, and gigantic insects.
In 2006, Brain Surgeon Theater, newly arrived in Chicago, IL produced its first show in the city at Gorilla Tango Bucktown, co-casting local kids and professional actors. Brain Arts Camp later made its Chicago debut in 2009. 15 campers devised and performed the original rock musical, "The Secret of Pompaloo Island."
In 2012, Brain Surgeon added Movie-Making camps, and in 2013 began offering advanced acting and Improv intensives. camps for older students. Movie-Making and theatre birthday parties began, by popular demand, in 2012.
Check out our summer programming and birthday party offerings -- we hope you'll join the Brain Surgeon family!
