It was last Sunday, the folks called, 'Annie we are on our way we decided to surprise you for Sunday dinner.' Which translates as, 'Annie we are on our way to snoop around your apartment and to see if you care enough to cook us Sunday dinner.' I woke with my pillow stuck to my hungover face when the text woke me. Stuffing the party paraphernalia of the night before in the washing machine in haze whilst sleeping bodies twitched at my feet. Once the clean up was done, the dinner panic ensued, this butchers signage welcomed me in. Once the butchers stopped laughing at me, they picked out the best cut of meat to cut in a hurry, they even told me the best temperature to put it at. Best of all they are cheap, I'm all about the cheap. The result was the folks loved it and believe that I am a well adjusted adult.

They do lots of deals for buying protein in bulk and have lots of other deals on everything from chicken fillets to steaks. The guy who runs the place is lovely as well. He is always ready and willing to give advice and recomendations on their meats.

Just off Henry street and taking up three huge shop fronts Buckley's is cornering the market on speciality, traditional and every day meats. There's rashers and loops of pudding, sides of beef and shoulders of lamb. Over the summer I was a religious weekly visitor, snapping up their chicken fillet deal of 10 for €9.99 (while steering well clear of that case of tripe, livers and hearts). Things can get busy during the day so expect to queue for a few minutes while the missus ahead of you gets her week's order of steak mince. As in any good butchers, the white-coated professionals here are happy to dispense a bit of butcherly advice on cooking your purchase or if it's right for the recipe you're planning on!

However this conversation took a turn for the better, "certainly, how many?" now I have no idea how chicken innards are quantifies so I asked for enough to make soup, the butcher nodded sagely and handed me a bag. You see this is an old style butchers, they still do all the cuts and bits and pieces that others don't do but that in no way means they are in any way inferior! I like this place, Clynes is also a craft butchers (where have they all come from!?) the guys are friendly and freely offer advice, they take pride in the shop and its a nice place to go as a result.

It's all local (from their farm), delicious, and delivered to you with a plethora of advice, commentary and gags from both the staff and the always-entertaining queue of people (if you want a slice of real Dublin life, stand in the queue on a Saturday morning and listen to the banter in there). The meat is prepared on premise and if you call ahead they can cut you any specific cut. We used to go there very regularly since the nearest shopping mall was just around the corner, so I was really disappointed when we moved to the South side. But they were really helpful and offered to deliver if we had a big order. The meat itself is just unreal. If you want the best steak ever, go and try their 21 days aged steak, You won't want anything else ever again... EVER. If they don't have any on display, just ask for it, they're always happy to cut something up for you, or have it in storage in the back of the shop. I also had ribs, whole chickens, pork shoulder, pork steaks and so on, and was never disappointed. Apart from the fresh meat you'll find some marinated products, but I've never tried those. Last but not least, they close fairly early on a Saturday and are closed on Sundays, so better make your way down early.

I then come home, wander through my local town Sandymount and see roght in front of me michael byrne craft butcher - I go in all the time, I've just never thought of it as noteworthy, but it is! Aside from the usual selection of meats they have something very special indeed - a fresh fish counter - surprisingly rare in the area and odd considering we are right beside the sea, anyway, the fish is always very fresh but a little expensive - actually thats probably a fair comment overall... but worth it for the odd treat or when you are feeling flush!

Narrow, bright and clean, the shop does a brisk business in chops, minces and sausages by the pound. Much like FX Buckleys (but without the history or the local franchise) there's always a crowd waiting for their orders here -and the good humour behind the counter is a welcome change for shoppers used to the plastic-wrapped grimness of Lidl across the street. The prices are practically parallel with Buckley's, making this a welcome diversion -not destination -for grocery shoppers.

Some butchers would have a lot of "prepared for cooking" stuff, but here wasn't that much, which I preferred. Well, if you need something pre-made, you might just go to fast food shop. My advise is to buy meat here and only then go to other shop that you will be doing your general groceries. What I saw that amazed me, was giant hearts. That was some premium muscle, man!
