This is probably the most comprehensive War Memorial Park I've ever visited! The Veterans of each…read morewar have been memorialized, plus there is a Bicentennial Flag Pavilion, Gold Star Wives of America, POW*MIA, Purple Heart, American Gold Star Mothers, Pearl Harbor, Merchant Marines, and the crew members who lost their lives on U.S. Submarines after WWII, among others! It took close to an hour to walk along and appreciate all of the memorials. There was so much to appreciate at each memorial. The Korean War Memorial was unique! It had an Asian styled entrance. It was pretty cool! When you looked through it, you could see the Map of Korea. Beyond that, there is a soldier on top of a pedestal with tributes to each of the Branches of Military. I took a picture of each plaque which also gives you a different vantage point of the soldier on top of the pedestal. I also was fascinated with the 15 flags flying high! Each flag has shows the changes in the United States through the years. Did you know that there is a specific flag for the Commander-In-Chief? This Park is just steps away from the Arkansas River. We were walking along the path next to the river when we spotted this and decided to take a closer look. So glad we did! I had not seen memorials for a lot of the Wars memorialized here. Sad to say there have been a lot of conflicts, but it's really cool that this spot in Kansas paid tribute to the Veterans and their families. In case you never make it here, I have added a slew of photos, so you can view them. I highly recommend y'all to make it out here. I am grateful to our Veterans & their families for the freedoms we can enjoy because of your sacrifices!

Nestled and stretched out over several acres along the Arkansas river (directly across Exploration Place) Lots of pride and respect was given to each war, personalized bricks and dedication signs. US Navy Submarine-had a real MK-14 torpedo and the Merchant Marine-is not very often displayed in most Military memorial parks, from what I hear. Operations Freedom-honoring fallen troops in Iraq and Afghanistan was impressive and had a life size kneeling bronze soldier. The New American Revolutionary War Memorial is started and looks like it should be done this year. Some others: Korean War, POW-MIA, Pearl Harbor, US Marines, WWII and Vietnam Vets No doubt, a visit is mandatory...Wichita residents-bring your children to teach/show respect for those who served for our country.

The representative was so supportive and I was so happy I was able to get my tag by the time of closing. Things to remember: check you title before you go that all parts are filled out and that there are no cross outs or scribbles.

This is the current Sedgwick County Courthouse and it is a mid-century high-rise structure…read morecompleted in 1958 and built in a Modern design style with glass, steel and concrete forming an 11-story vertical block. I had just been across the street at the old Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse that is all arches and stone and late 19th century "drama" design. Stepping over to here, the vibe sifts completely. This building is very much the active, security-checkpoint, business-of-the-county courthouse and on a day when I wasn't feeling up to dealing with metal detectors and bag checks, the exterior tells enough of the story. Horizontal window bands, recessed lower floors, flat rooflines and that unmistakable 1950s confidence. It declares that the government should look streamlined, efficient and lean forward. It doesn't have the ornament or craftmanship of the historic courthouse, but as a working building it projects exactly what Wichita wanted. It's a functional, modern courthouse rising over Main Street and still doing the daily work of the 18th Judicial District while its predecessor across the way has settled into its quieter second life. But this time the time zone difference worked in my favor and I managed to slip in after my work day while it was still open. And open it is, because I walked right in and had the run of the place long enough to appreciate the structure of this old building and the craftsmanship in the woodwork, tile, and fixtures. The Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse was completed in 1888 in a Richardsonian Romanesque style, all rough stone, arches, and heavy detailing. It still feels solid and intentional more than a century later. The interior has that classic late nineteenth century feel with broad staircases, carved trim, and the kind of workmanship that you only get when a county is trying to announce that it has arrived. Sedgwick County itself was formed in 1867 and named for Union Major General John Sedgwick, and Wichita has been the county seat from the beginning. The territorial legislature chose Wichita because it was already emerging as a regional trading center on the Arkansas (pronounced AR-Kansas) River and had the population and economic momentum that nearby towns could not match. The building was meant to anchor a growing city, and even with government and judicial offices moved elsewhere, the place still carries that sense of civic pride and permanence. Stonehenge in Central Riverside Park is one of those Wichita curiosities that you stumble upon…read morealmost by accident, a tight cluster of stones arranged in a rough henge-like circle just off the park's main walkway. They sit on the north side of the park near the bend of the Little Arkansas River and while you can see them clearly from the paved path, wheelchairs and mobility challenged folks won't be able to reach the stones themselves because the final 100 feet or so is uneven grass. If you're able to walk out to them, they make for an interesting stop, especially since the park has plenty of parking and is already one of the city's best green spaces. The stones were installed in the late 1970s as part of a public art initiative tied to Riverside Park's long history as Wichita's oldest municipal park, first established in 1887. I've been to a number of "henges" across the country - Kentucky Stonehenge, Canoehenge in Missouri, the Cadillac Ranch and VW Bug Ranch in Texas - and this one fits right into that tradition of playful Americana. It's smaller and more modest than the big roadside installations, but it has that same spirit of someone deciding that a ring of stones would make the world a little more interesting. The setting helps, too. Central Riverside Park is wrapped by a bend in the river, giving the stones a surprisingly scenic backdrop, and the whole area is easy to enjoy on foot. It's not the original in England, but it's a fun, quirky landmark that adds character to a park that already has plenty. [Review 737 of 2026 - 87 in Kansas - 25918 overall]
