My family utilized the old facility a lot when my children were younger, but in recent years I've been getting my reading materials from Barnes & Noble. The building is beautiful and accommodating with many private rooms of all sizes available for meetings large and small. Just a few though: print a document from home to pick up at the library (as well as many other business functions), adult self-checkout (bypass the line!), scan a book while you're at Barnes & Noble using the library app to see if the library has it, AND reserve it!, 'library to go' (delivery service for patrons unable to visit the library), and on and on! Pizza Hut was founded here in Wichita in 1958 by brothers Dan and Frank Carney. After decades of expansion and multiple ownership changes, it is currently in the process of being sold by Yum! Brands to a capital company and a Chinese partner. The chain struggled in recent years due to declining US sales, increased competition and the rise of delivery-first rivals with lower costs. The latest news is that the sale is expected to close later this year, marking the first time since the 1970s that Pizza Hut will not be owned by PepsiCo or Yum. A sad new chapter. (Just don't ask me how many Pizza Huts I've reviewed because I wasn't helping them much.) This now joins my growing collection of "firsts" that includes the first Starbucks in Seattle, the first Dunkin in Quincy, the first Timmy's in Hamilton and now the birthplace of the Hut. The interpretive panels around the paths are actually fun to read and they give a quick, friendly crash course on the history of the Plains tribes without feeling heavy or academic. With the Big and Little Arkansas (pronounced AR-Kansas) Rivers rushing together right below, there is a steady sound of moving water that makes the whole place feel calm even when there are people around. The pedestrian bridges are honestly half the experience. They are cable-stayed and with those tall, clean looking masts and the cables fanning out, it feels light and modern. Walking across gives a great rive of the rivers on both sides and the design makes the approach to the Keeper feel intentional. Almost like the bridges are guiding you to the statue. It is one of those spots where the setting and the structure work together so well that you end up enjoying the walk as much as the destination. [Review 734 of 2026 - 85 in Kansas - 25915 overall]

The Keeper of the Plains is one of those Wichita landmarks that feels even more powerful when…read moreyou're standing there in the heat of a weekday afternoon, watching the rivers meet below you. It was designed by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin and is a 44-foot-tall Cor-Ten steel sculpture that was unveiled in 1974. The sculpture was created as a gift to the city and as a tribute to the Native peoples of the Plains. With its hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit, it represents both spirituality and the deep cultural history tied to the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers, a site long considered sacred by many tribes. The surrounding plaza interprets Plains Indian life and the famous Rings of Fire illuminate the base on select evenings, adding a ceremonial feel to the space. From a visitor's perspective, accessibility is mixed. The upper plaza and bridges are easy to navigate, but the lower riverbank areas to require steps, which is worth noting on a hot day when you're exploring the city. Still, the experience feels meaningful. The sculpture's elevation onto a 30-foot rock promontory and the addition of the bow-and-arrow-inspired bridges only strengthen its presence as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas and as Wichita's most recognizable symbol. Even as someone who isn't Native American, it's hard not to appreciate how intentionally the city honors the region's Indigenous heritage here. The setting, the interpretive elements and the sculpture itself all work together to create a place that feels respectful, reflective and unmistakably tied to the Plains. But this time the time zone difference worked in my favor and I managed to slip in after my work day while it was still open. And open it is, because I walked right in and had the run of the place long enough to appreciate the structure of this old building and the craftsmanship in the woodwork, tile, and fixtures. The Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse was completed in 1888 in a Richardsonian Romanesque style, all rough stone, arches, and heavy detailing. It still feels solid and intentional more than a century later. The interior has that classic late nineteenth century feel with broad staircases, carved trim, and the kind of workmanship that you only get when a county is trying to announce that it has arrived. Sedgwick County itself was formed in 1867 and named for Union Major General John Sedgwick, and Wichita has been the county seat from the beginning. The territorial legislature chose Wichita because it was already emerging as a regional trading center on the Arkansas (pronounced AR-Kansas) River and had the population and economic momentum that nearby towns could not match. The building was meant to anchor a growing city, and even with government and judicial offices moved elsewhere, the place still carries that sense of civic pride and permanence.
