The principal and assistant principal are very positive and set a great upbeat tone for the campus. I *think* they've only been in leadership since 2019. (My son started Kinder in 2020). Bishop has dedicated teachers and staff and a culture of leadership and personal agency. I love there there are many male teachers here. Positive male role models make such a big difference in children's success and outcomes as adults. The teachers run many of the after-school activities (e.g., ukulele, coding, cooking and fractions, leadership) and the amount of care and love they put into supporting the students' school experience is really inspirational. Low scores are largely correlated with the socioeconomics of the community since it's a neighborhood school. Bishop is a Title 1 school, meaning it has a high percentage of families that have low socioeconomic status (SES). In Sunnyvale School District, Bishop has the highest percentage of low SES students (60.2%) and highest percentage of English Language Learners (50.9%). A constant goal is more family engagement, especially amongst Spanish-speaking families. It's really difficult to involve families whose schedules don't allow for extra participation or funds to be spent at school. The cultures of many families in our school don't have the same kind of norms of school involvement as is common in a lot of American schools. Many families in our neighborhood choose private schools or the two choice schools in our district which has a very significant impact on what families are left at the school. While it has the highest needs, Bishop also has the lowest community resources. Our PTO budget is a fraction of some of the schools in South Sunnyvale. I believe it's the responsibility for those of us that have the privilege of being more involved in our children's education to step up by supporting our public schools as well as we can. Maybe it means creating a display to show off your heritage at the multi-cultural festival; perhaps you can help clean up popcorn after a school movie night; maybe you can mark laps on the back of kids' shirts during the Walkathon. All contributions to the school are significant, appreciated, and the form the school's culture. I love that my son (and my daughter in two years) gets to spend his days with kids that aren't just like him. Attending Bishop - our neighborhood school - is preparing him for "real life" with diverse people. I believe in public schools. I hope that others in our neighborhood will also consider sending their kids to Bishop. If you're considering sending your kids here, do it.

Absolutely horrific school. The "school day" is all about playing, drawing, exercising, and…read moreunsupervised time-wasting (kids playing around, again), and feeding kids 1990's processed food, only interrupted by a couple of kindergarten-level classes (in an elementary school). The most worthless part of it is the afternoon program called KLAS, which is all about collecting government support and grants to provide the school some extra funds, but most of the staff does not care to effectively help your kid (with a very few exceptions). Our kid kept bringing home the homework, because there was no effective help given in the afternoon class (which is meant for helping kids with homework and learning). Kids don't feel comfortable asking for help, and the staff remains completely unaware (or ignorant) of that. They expect the books and the parents to do all the teaching and kids to learn on their own. Why? Because they don't truly care and let kids do nothing but play. All they do is play. Play, play, play and play. Do everything in your power you can to stay away from this shameless low-level institution. It's an embarrassment, even by California elementary educational standards.

It is one of four middle schools in Santa Clara and is located conveniently next to the city's Youth Activity Center (YAC) and Teen Center. ACADEMICS - I find the academic instruction to be good, although maybe not as high-achieving as that of Peterson. In 6th grade the students will have the same set of 30-35 students in every class while teachers will change. Then in 7th/8th grade there will be the same students in every "core" class (where one period is Language Arts and the other Social Studies) while in the other classes the teachers and students will change. Additionally, in 7th/8th grades there will be the option to take an elective class, which includes: leadership, art, TAing (teacher assistants), and a few more. SPORTS - There is a variety of afterschool sport programs here, including: volleyball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, and more. When I was a student here, there was a no cuts rule which was unique against the other middle schools. The wonderful thing about this is it encourages fitness and doesn't exclude any student. FACILITIES - The facilities are nice but unfortunately the school does not have school lockers or a gym like that of Peterson and Buchser since those two are former high schools. However, this is rarely a problem as textbooks are distributed in sets of two (one for the student to take home and one kept in class) and the YAC allows the middle school to use its gym. FUN FACTS - The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (science, tech, engineering, math) is held here! Also, it may or may not be true that the principal Stan Garber plays whiffle ball with students in the mornings :).

I went there for fifth grade and my brother went there for all six years of elementary school…read more Sadly, I would have to say that the school overall did not provide nor foster a loving learning environment for either of us. The majority of our teachers were not supportive and were very disorganized, though this does not apply to ALL teachers, as I believe there were some who actually were very helpful and caring, allowing us to really enjoy learning new material. However, out of the seven teachers that me and my brother had, only one cared about her students and her class was the only one that we felt we actually loved learning new material in. In addition, there were many times where if there was conflict between the students, the teachers would often jump to pointing fingers and placing blame on innocent students instead of getting the story straight first, making us students feel things were unfair and affecting our social skills and love for school. The office administration staff is okay, though there were some secretaries in the front office that would often disrespect students, often talking to us with a "I'm better than you because of my title and position" voice, not having any form of self-respect and dignity to allow students to grow. Ms. Tanya Robertson especially did not have any form of communication to students, and would address us in a disdained tone, but then change her voice to a respectful one when any parents were nearby, making us students feel lowly and not allowing any of us to feel any confidence when growing up. The lunch ladies and yard duties there were also not very nice, too selfish and addressing students in a dismissive and irritated tone as well. Many times yard duties wouldn't even bother to actually keep an eye on students, just busy talking to one another and dismissing us students whenever we needed help. They would often be quick to place blame on students as well when there was conflict, placing blame on innocent students instead of getting the story straight first. The lunch quality at De Vargas is also very bad, and there were many times where the milk from the lunch line would be expired. All this created a sort of back-stabbing social environment for the students, and led to many animosity between classmates and did not provide a supportive community at De Vargas elementary at all. Thus, I sadly have to say De Vargas did not provide a loving learning environment at all, and, if possible, going to another school that would help give children a better stable foundation would be better for the students and their future. I hope that there will be changes to De Vargas to help provide a community for students and parents alike.

Cathy Olsen and Cathy Walsh both are not as nice but especially Mrs.Walsh, she screams at kids for no reason and got mad at someone I knew for wanting cold water. 3. Mrs.Heydari was the rudest substitute as she was getting mad at people for the smallest things and even screaming for no reason.

The classrooms and playground are fine, although due to the blacktop outside my sons NEVER wears shorts due to skinned knees. The teachers are harder to review, as each one is different and interacts with the kids differently. The newborn room was very relaxed, calm, clean, no shoes allowed, and quite. My youngest was always happy to go to school when he was in the newborn room. He was moved to the next room at age 18 months, then again at 2 years old. That is a bit too much changing around for a kid only there for a year, he's already had more than 8 different teachers. My 4 year old was in the 3 year old room for a year, and moved on to the 4 year old room just recently. He is pretty happy with his teachers, although he has had a couple issues with other students and we had to get the teachers involved they seems concerned and willing to work with us.

They are reasonable in pricing, flexible with their time and days, and they also provide warm lunches that are delivered daily for the kids, and majority of the staff are pretty nice. However, just recently, my daughter was playing at the playground during outdoor free time and a boy from another location was placed there for the day b/c he was not allowed to go on a field trip (older boy). Somehow, they were arguing over who goes down the slide first and my daughter was allegedly accused that she was adamant on going first when the boy was actually first. The boy scratched her face and left her scarred from forehead down to around her ears, cheek, and even her right arm, near her armpit. When my husband and I went to question the teachers, staff at CYW, they were not very straight with us. However, the people we talked to that very day did not have the insights. We just asked what happened and how come the teachers weren't watching to prevent this from happening. And basically, the Director (Ms. Trina) called me later that afternoon and said that the teachers were watching and that the ratio is always the same. BUT if the teachers were watching, how come it wasn't prevent? Shouldn't they stop the kids from fighting over the slide? Shouldn't the teacher tell our daughter and that boy to play nicely, and to share...or ask who was there first and direct the other child to wait?? NO! but of course not, they weren't paying attention that's why my daughter left with scars on her face! She's still traumatized til today. Touches her face and says "friend hit me".....how sad is that for a 2.5 yr old to have her first daycare/preschool experience like this. Lastly, sadly to say....when my husband and I decided to pull her out and place her somewhere else, Ms Trina, the Director didn't seem to care or want our daughter there. Obviously they don't want our business and does not care about their students or parents concerns. My husband comes into the office, tells Ms Trina we will pull our daughter out, and all she said to my husband was "sign here!" Seriously what kind of service is that? There was no questions asked of "why? how can we work around this? Can we find a solution to keep her here to try it out again? What are your concerns for pull her out?" NOTHING, NADA, ZIPPO!!! We were very disappointed to see how she handled our decision, but we're not surprised because the situation was handled exactly the same way they handled our daughter's incident...and that's without a CARE! obviously these staff does not care about anyone but themselves and their wallet. We are glad we made the decision to pull her out. LIke the saying goes, True Colors show when sh*t hit the fan. I suggest you take your kids elsewhere, definitely not here!
