Asda Filling Station

I love Asda filling stations because they cut out all the annoying wait you get while people decide…read morethey want to have a look around the shop too! They do still have the manned booths here, but either way its quick and the most important part for me is that this is by far the cheapest petrol station I can find. Its usually at least 2p cheaper than any other petrol station I come across. For that reason alone its brilliant. Its also open 24 hours (self service only).

I want to draw customers attention to possible poor/illegal practices at this petrol station…read more Many times I go in to purchase items in the shop whether it's dog food or water I am charged a different price of one or more items to that advertised on the shelf. I am also frequently given the wrong change and strangely it's always in the favour of the guy behind the till! Funny that This evening I bought a water for £1.29 and dogfood for 75p I was charged respectively £1,40 and 85p when I complained I was told I would have to come back and see the manager the following morning as money could not be taken from the till to refund. There are some very dodgy practices going on at this garage - make sure you check your shelf prices and your change carefully! Whoever owns this garage should do a bit of mystery shopping sometime.
Now I don't usually review garages, but this is a deserved exception. The Total garage at the…read morebottom of Cathedral Road is run by a man for whom it is impossible to let an opportunity pass. He will try and sell his customers a whole range of stuff, even if they only want to buy a stamp or pay for their petrol. I've been asked if I want to also purchase a lottery ticket, 'Euromillions this weekend madam win big!' a set of plastic BBQ tongs, 'weather good this weekend, madam sit outside, eat some food!' a token for the carwash, 'discount today madam, Gold wash for the price of Bronze,' even though I was on foot. Meal deals, DVDs, marked down chocolates the list goes on and on. One poor girl I know can't go in there anymore. She has trouble with the word 'no' and often came away having spent £7 or £8 when she only popped in for a can of pop! If you're going in, steel your nerves and don't, for heaven's sake, show any fear.

I never mind queuing here because the staff are quick at serving and the queue seems to move pretty quickly. There are lots of petrol pumps too, so if one or too run out of fuel, there are always plenty of others left.

Tesco Cardiff Tyn-y-parc Express

I couldn't disagree more really, I find this one of the most irritating petrol stations in Cardiff…read more Its got the most annoying layout i've seen and there always seems to be at least one pump not working. They just have one pump instead of the more common 2 pump lay out, and there are always cues because people fill up their cars and then spend 20 minutes in the bloody shop while you sit and wait!! Yes there are car parking spaces for people who need to pick up some bits but you always get those who don't! Price wise it used to be the cheapest in town, its not anymore. I guess they have finally realised that being the first station off the M4 or the last before the M4 rip off stations they are going to get people in. Finally its on a busy crossroads and even getting in and out is a hassle! Oh yeah and there are none of those nice easy pay at pump points to make it quicker either!
I feel slightly weird reviewing a petrol station, however I can honestly say that the Tesco express…read morefilling station on Tyn-Y-Parc Road is the best petrol station in Cardiff (so surely that in itself means it's worthy of a review). There are plenty of pumps, and the petrol is not usually too expensive (in comparison to other stations in Cardiff) and very rarely runs out. On the downside though, there are very often queues, due no doubt to this stations prime location. What really impresses me though about this place is the Tesco express attached to it. For a filling station this grocery store is rather large (much bigger than my local Tescos), and has a massive selection of magazines, fresh, and frozen food. It wouldn't surprise me if people were able to do their weekly shop here (a slight exaggeration perhaps, but you never know).

Very poor cafe, small with cheap little tables, scarcely any choice for vegetarians and nothing for…read morevegans (apart from the inevitable potato with boring beans). The veggie choice today was between a potato, or a lasagne. Nothing imaginative and nothing gluten-free (other than the potato - but without beans because baked beans contain gluten). It annoyed me that some of the other veggie options on the 'main menu board' - the one on the wall that never varies - weren't available (the macaroni cheese, for example). I'll give it 2 stars because at least you can have a coffee and rest your feet, and the young man serving was pleasant and friendly. Tesco really should take a few leaves out of Morrisons book when it comes to a good cafe with lots of choice.
Radyr Filling Station
It's a Gulf petrol station on the Llantrisant Road between the turning for Radyr and the…read moreDanscourt/Fairwater roundabout. So conveniently placed. However if you are the sort of person who considers the price of petrol you might do better to drive half a mile towards Cardiff. The petrol in Radyr Filling station is almost always ten pence and litre more expensive than everywhere else. The reasons for this are difficult to fathom except perhaps you don't have to pay for your own petrol and it's on the way to town then who cares? There's also a little shop which is good for a pint of milk and a mars bar. The staff are quite jolly and, strangely, it's never busy.

Convenient for the M4 and A470 and not usually a queue. Inside the shop there's a good range of those emergency sorts of breads and milks and sweets that will save you actually attacking ASDA. There's a car wash (never been in there - isn't that what rain's for?) and air for your tyres. I love the usual staff in here, sometimes I wonder if they affect some different wacky personality for each customer to avoid boredom.

It's your standard Esso really with loads of choccy, crisps, sandwiches and magazines (particularly those aimed at the lonely trucker). But on a more practical sense it is also very helpful in terms of getting petrol 24/7.
