When I started patronizing this BP station, it was a full service facility. Complete with a garage and a mechanic- she was really talented and the prices for mechanical service were reasonable for my wallet, which in those days was limited. Over time, renovations have been made and convenience store type offerings have taken precedence in this industry and the tire and engine offerings have gone by the wayside. Still if you're on the north side of downtown Columbus and really need fuel, this station is a must to have in your repertoire of places to rely upon. It does frequently get busy and the lot is tight on space, so maneuvering your vehicle can at times be challenging. I advise at the busier times to take a look and assess your entry and exit strategy before you commit to a particular position at a fuel pump... you may have to back in or back out at the start or finish, so just keep that all in mind. read more

Well, this is definitely a first for me. Leaving a review for a gas station doesn't sound super exciting but I know it can be helpful... especially when it comes to getting the scoop on this one. The other reviews on this page are accurate in regards to the price of gas here compared to other stations around the city. If I had to guess the reason for that is because it's located right off interstate 670 and there isn't another gas station in the area for a few miles. If I'm being honest I only stop here if I'm on empty... and not just, "my light came on I better fill up" empty. I'm talking more like, "if I go one more mile I'll be on the side of the road" empty. Overall this gas station looks a little old and grungy and it is! The gas pumps are a slightly outdated and being a short lady, I can hardly read the machine because it's so tall. Oh and yes I stand on the little curb but it's still hard to see (that was the recommendation from the employee inside, haha). Sometimes you can find a food truck parked out front and they have a few snacks inside. All I can say is that this gas station is always my last resort and it will likely stay that way unless it gets updated a bit. Hint -hint* The neighborhood would love it! read more

So if you use the mobile Yelp app at all, then you might have seen my many quick tips regarding places that have free air machines. Well, of the 3 or 4 I knew of in the city, this is the only one that still has free air. In fact, maybe I should be keeping that a secret. Oh well. So my rating mostly comes from the fact that it is now the only place I know of that won't charge me 75 cents or more for a few minutes of air coming out a hose. However, in addition to that, it has I guess about 8 pumps, a 2-bay service station, and a tiny storefront as well. I haven't had any work done here, and on some days it doesn't even look like they're open. The convenience store part is very tiny, with a very limited selection. They sell some beer, but mostly tall boys and a few brands of six or twelve packs. Not where you go for microbrews. The same goes for the snack and beverage selection. Just the very basics. But sometimes that's all you need. Oh, lastly, the location can be kind of hard to get in or out of due to its location right off Neil near Goodale. read more

This tiny throwback gas station sits right before Neil ducks under 670; it is a real hoot. Great God I don't know how long it has been since I've last entered, maybe 20-years, but I stopped for some water. It doesn't look like it changed a bit in that score--a real time warp--it was small inside like gas stations were in the days they actually made money on gas, and just had scant stock of candy bars and soda for impulse. Think the days when actual mechanics work in them--the usual icons were middle aged, balding, chain-smoking, beer-gutted bullshitters named Bob; lovable and confident, they could even get snobby cheerleaders giggling with their barely witty, teasey charm. It didn't look it had much at first just some Hersey's and beer in a standup pop cooler. I didn't see water in the narrow room, but the clerk pointed to a door with a homemade poster directing customers inside. It lead to the retired garage were coolers of the usual gas station crap hummed. And I don't mean it was refurbished to add space, no they just threw coolers in there on the concrete uneven floor around dust and the smell of ancient oil. It was awesome. I am not being sarcastic; a little not-giving-a-shiet attitude can be refreshing. There really no reason to upscale for soda, beer, and power drinks anyways. Never change! read more

5 Stars for quickness and old-timey awesomeness. My tire blew in the snow. I put on a donut and slid/limped into BP because it happened to be close. The guy took my blown tire in immediately and started working on it. I was short on time, and the fix was going to take awhile. The mechanic noticed me checking my phone for the time more and more frequently. He offered to work on it while I was gone, noting that his son Chris would be in the shop til 10pm. I hobbled to work, then careened back later in the evening. Chris mounted the good -as -newish tire on my car and charged me 15 bucks. This was all key, because I had to drive straight from BP to Kentucky that evening. And as I said before, it was all done with an old-timey "I am human, and not an amoral corporate slave" attitude. Thurber BP is so much more than a gas station. Over the years I have waited out rain inside it's garage during Com-Fest, Doo Dah, and Goodale visits. Ann the mechanic has de-iced my gas tank during the blizzard of '08 and the ice storm of '05. And Dan, Ann the mechanic's brother has filled my tires with air when my dress was too fancy to touch the ground. The gas prices are higher here then most places downtown. However in a moment of cheesey-ness I will tell you that the smiles are free. The staff gets to know its regulars and it is not unusual to be greeted here by name, or to have your daily coffee and paper ready as you walk in the door. If your car needs work Ann the mechanic will fix it with an abrasive attitude I have come to expect and love. Keep Thurber BP in mind for more than just fill-ups. Ann the mechanic is really affordable and extremely honest. If she can't fix it she will tell you someone who can. Stop in for gas, come back for the service and learn why this place is more than petrol. read more

While maybe I will stop by for the free air sometime, I am not impressed with this gas station. Usually, I would say all gas stations are relatively the same - grab a Gatorade and some fuel - be on my merry way. But this gas station really irks me. My list of grievances * Almost always more expensive than surrounding local * Dirty * The pumps are so high I can't read the machine without stepping up * Old school, still have to flip the handle up * The past 2 times the machine kept stopping and I had to restart So why have I gone here several times? Well I'm lazy and sometimes let my gas light go on for too long and then am paralyzed with fear that I will be stranded on the road. It is around the corner - and it is definitely my back up. read more

Always over priced on their gasoline. You'll likely find a better price anywhere else you go in Columbus. Good for them though. They sort of have a monopoly on gas in the neighborhood. At least the Drinks and items in the newly expanded store inside are normal prices read more

I come here for my oil changes and any other little things that I need with my car (flat tires, brakes), even if it's just advice. They're always friendly, affordable and willing to work with your schedule. This shop's unstated motto is to serve the customer and they do this very well. When you're scheduling, when you bring your car in, you get a sense that they're working to help you out and not to make a dime off you like many chains out there. If they talk to you about your car, they'll be honest - no BS here. Like another customer said - if they can't fix it, they'll tell you where you might be able to. They are good people. read more

So my car wouldn't start one day. (less than a week after I had a tune up, replaced 2 tires, and replaced the TPS sensor which I explained to folks at Thurber BP before I had it towed there) They recommended a towing company that could be billed with the repair for my convenience. They also said they could look at it that day to let me know what was wrong with it. They never looked at it until the next day. They told me that they thought there was a compression issue in the engine (engine was shot), and that they weren't willing to take the time to take it apart to officially diagnose the problem. So I had to pay their tow bill. Then have it towed to another repair shop. The other repair shop tried starting it 3 times, and it didn't start. They reset the computer (which they said wouldn't be the reason that the car didn't start), but voila the car started up, and ran just fine since. I let the fine people at Thurber BP know about what happened, and they told me they had the same problem 3 times that week. Something tells me that they might be getting a kickback from the towing company, and they don't have a full time mechanic actually working there. But that's just my opinion. You can make your own judgement from the facts of the story... But if I were you, and wanted my car looked at by a professional, I wouldn't recommend Thurber BP. read more
