Just because a gas station is by a freeway exit ramp is no excuse to over charge on every item in the gas station store.

Alexs Market & Grill - Chicken Shawarma

Alex's Market & Grill in White Lake is one of those places that looks like it should be great--but…read morenever quite delivers on that promise. It's a unique setup as a gas station, market, deli, and bistro all in one, and they definitely offer a ton of options. The selection is honestly one of their biggest strengths--whether it's groceries, prepared foods, or drinks, there's a lot to choose from. That said, the prices are noticeably high across the board, especially for gas and everyday grocery items. The food-to-go section is where things start to fall off. It always looks solid in the case, but somehow never tastes as good as it should. It's not terrible--it's just consistently underwhelming. The bistro itself is decent, but nothing special. If you've had Middle Eastern-style grill spots before, you've had this. Plenty of lamb and shawarma options, but nothing that really stands out. The one exception: the Thai peanut chicken wings and the shoestring fries are actually really good and worth ordering. They also advertise a huge beer selection--something like 100 options--but in reality, the taps are rarely all running, which takes away from what could be a big highlight. One thing that stood out on my last visit was how strong the smell of cleaner was inside. It was almost overpowering and made it tough to sit and enjoy a meal. On the flip side, it was definitely clean--maybe just a little too clean in that moment. Overall, Alex's Market & Grill has a lot of potential with its variety and concept, but it ends up being more average than it looks at first glance. Good in a pinch, but not somewhere you go out of your way for.

Walking in was honestly a bit overstimulating--there's a lot going on right at the entrance with…read moreitems everywhere, which made it feel a little chaotic at first. We went upstairs to eat around 1 PM on a Thursday, so it wasn't particularly busy. Unfortunately, they had already "run out" of a few key items, including the Dubai Espresso Martini and bone-in wings. That was confusing, especially considering there's a grocery store downstairs--it didn't quite add up and was disappointing. The service itself was great. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, but she didn't seem very familiar with the menu and couldn't offer recommendations, which would have helped since it was our first time. As for the food: the boom boom shrimp and lamb sliders were both good and definitely the highlights. However, the fish tacos were extremely salty--so much so that I couldn't finish them. Overall, the vibe is cool and I'd consider coming back for drinks, but based on this experience, I don't think I'd return for the food. We do appreciate the free dessert, I'm just still hungry

Pine Knob Shell

Eighteen positive reviews. An experience here has inspired my first negative…read more On the positive side, the pumps dispense quickly! I am on the road almost constantly, and only purchase Shell fuel. This evening, during a routine drive to SE Michigan, I stopped for a fill up, a bag of trail mix, a granola bar and a 20-ounce water. On my way out, I grabbed a small paper cup to dispense my trail mix while I was driving. The clerk stopped me at the door to inform me the cup would cost me a quarter! I didn't have any cash on me -- and this seemed ludicrous (I would have understood and fully supported this policy if I had not made any purchases ... but I had just dropped $60 there.) Come on! It's a *cup*! That said, I had to put my contraband cup back. (Sincere apologies to the fountain drink purchaser who paid for a "pristine" cup, and did not get one ... I had no choice!) Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised ... I mean, this is a place that -- for as long as I've been fueling there -- hasn't fixed the lock on the ladies' room door. They have posted a sign instructing people to knock. I figure they must do enough business to take care of business, given their close proximity to Pine Knob and the Palace. Fortunately, I have encountered many Shell owners and employees who treat their customers well. I look forward to seeing more of them!

What a wonderful venue for a beautiful wedding. The Pine Knob Mansion in Clarkston, Mi., built in…read morethe 1920s by Colonel Waldon. It was enjoyed as Summer house for his family as well as host to H. Firestone, H Ford and other auto and industrial giants. It is built in the neoclassical and English Tutor style, similar to The Meadowbrook Castle only on a smaller scale. Now days is primarily used for elegant partys, weddings and high social occasions. They provide complimentary valet as parking at the main house is very limited. Their upscale gourmet kitchen provided a wonderful four course formal dinner with a variety of appitizers and champagne followed by Michigan salad of field greens, cherries, walnuts accompanied by a fresh strawberry vinegarette. Next was perfectly broiled salmon topped with a mango chutney, baked chicken laced with tangy lemon butter sauce that litterly melted in my mouth. Yummy sides of garlic mashed potatoes ,sauté asparagus and glazed baby carrots competed the main course. Wine was refilled several times throughout dinner. Dessert was a scrumptious cupcake filled with strawberry mousse. After dinner they served Baileys in coffee. I had mine straight up !! What a memorable evening and an eye treat this beautiful vintage house, full of history and delectable dinner was. Hoping to have a return visit very soon.
