    Shelves of flavor

Fun find as we drove across the state. This is the home of the Clark Bar and Mallo Cups. We bought a variety of items to try including all the mallo cup flavors plus some imperfects (which are the bars too ugly to wrap up and sell but still delicious). Person behind the counter was friendly and helped explain all the flavors and options. Prices are great and make for a nice treat.

The Boyer Candy Company has been in business since the Great Depression. Perhaps their most famous candy is the Mallo Cup, which is a chocolate-covered marshmallow. They also sell Clark candy bars, peanut butter cups, and butterscotch smoothie cups as well as chocolate-covered pretzels and plain chocolates in holiday shapes. I wanted to buy only a small amount of each of their main products, so I picked out a mug that was filled with one of each candy for $11. At the cash register, an employee talked on the phone for maybe five minutes before he hung up, said hello to my husband and me, and rung up our one item. He explained that he was on the phone with his manager, but the discussion seemed to be complaining rather than important business. I think that he should have said hello to us when he was still on the phone and quickly wrapped up his phone call. My husband called the topic of the phone call "gossip" and was ready to walk out of the store! At home, I ate the candies, and they tasted just as good as I remember them from my childhood.

I hadn't been here in nearly a decade and was happy to come back with my boyfriend who had never been. It's always fun to visit the spot where the infamous Mallo Cups are made. It's even more fun to buy in bulk to take it home.

I love going off the beaten path to find fun places.... This was a gem! It's small but packed with so much! You will find things not in retail stores!!! Loved it

One of my top three favorite candies, located in Downtown Altoona PA. Took the longer way home, last weekend to pick up the chocolate yummy mello cups straight from the factory. Boyer Candies is bringing back the Clark Bar heavenly delicate chocolate with a crunch. Friendly, pleasant, cheerful staff... Purchased a 5 lb bag of rejects mello cups for 12.99 ,that yes they do sale that are perfectly fine, Jimmie Sticks and Clark bars. The shop is smaller with something for everyone..If your a fan of Mello Cups, Jimmy sticks or soon to be released Clark bars its worth the trip if your in the area.

As a Pittsburgh-area native, I've grown up eating Mallo cups. But wow, fresh from the factory ones are the best I've ever had. We just happened to see a billboard ad for the factory on I 80. We weren't in a rush, so we decided to stop. The factory store isn't huge, but there's plenty of goodies there. You can buy Mallo Cups, Clark bars and peanut butter cups in bulk. There are seconds, or damaged ones, for super cheap, and they even have tubs of the Mallo Cup filling if you feel the need to make your own. There's also t-shirts, mugs, and plush toys to suit all of your non sweet tooth needs. They also have had dark chocolate Mallos that I've never seen in stores, but THEY ARE THE BEST. Another fun fact: Boyer's supposedly created the original peanut butter cup, too, which I hadn't realized until recently. So those Reese's are simply a knockoff of the OG. It's totally worth the roadside stop. Stretch your legs and pick up way more chocolate than you need!

You must try Altoona's local candy! Definitely worth a quick stop to try these local candies! It's a small store with a selection of *only* the Blair candies, which is just a handful of brands. I f you don't know the brands: Mallo Cup - creamy marshmallow center with chocolate in a cup, looks like a Reeses peanut butter cup. Also a dark chocolate version Jimmie Stix - pretzels covered in peanut butter and then covered in chocolate - unique Smoothies - yet another "cup" candy with a peanut butter filling and a butterscotch candy coating. What?!? Peanut Butter Cups - just like Reese's They purchased the Clark brand and plan to make and sell Clark bars at some point. Clark is another historic PA brand.

    So many Mallo Cups.

You may think you've tried a Mallo Cup, but if you haven't eaten one that's factory fresh, then the sad truth is that you haven't. Much like beer, Mallo Cups start declining the moment they roll off the production line. What could possibly happen to a chocolate cup filled with whipped marshmallow creme? Believe it or not, but the creme center thickens up and becomes more of a solid than a liquid. Liquid? Oh yes! When they are fresh the whipped creme center of the Mallo Cup is a thick, luxurious, runny confection. It's delightful, and as far as I'm concerned, the only reason to buy these candies. Once you've had the real deal, an old Mallo Cup is hardly worth eating. At the factory you can also buy two pound buckets of the whipped creme. I couldn't resist. Although I'm a little bit terrified of my new purchase, and haven't opened the tub yet. Can I live at that speed? Only time will tell.

The Boyer brothers invented the peanut butter cup decades before Reeses. The quality of Boyer cup candy is a level above anything the major manufacturers are producing. They make a Resses cup taste like crap. There is a reason the Boyer company is the only US candy manufacturer showing year to year 20% growth in an otherwise declining industry. It's worth placing a large online order and paying for express shipping. Once you eat your first Mallow cup you'll be hooked for life. Clark bar fans must order the Clark cups they are still working out the kinks of candy bar production and are presently making Clark bars in cup form. The taste and crunch texture is spot on perfect vs the defunct former producer.

If you're in Altoona, PA, make sure to stop here! They gave us free samples of Mallo cups and have awesome T-shirts! They also sell 5 pound buckets of marshmallow filling if you're into that sort of thing. You can buy boxes of imperfect Mallo cups. They sell bags of Jimmie sticks which are pretzels dipped in peanut butter and chocolate. Which so happens to be my favorite! Yummy!!!

I believe i like the Reese peanut butter cup better. The Boyer ones seem to have less peanut butter, and are not as tasty.

And many other liqueur chocolates, chocolate covered cocoa beans, homemade caramels, creams covered in Lush dark chocolate or light chocolate even white chocolate. Last weekend I was at my parents in Altoona. On the coffee table was an intriguing black box of chocolates. I opened the box and saw these adorable perfect little morsals staring up at me. The 1st piece I tried was obvious... A dark chocolate Carmel with a sprinkle of sea salt on top. Ooh, !!!! As I placed it on my tongue, The melting started immediately. Followed by my mouth watering as my brain reacted to the pure joy of the perfect combination of texture and taste of the Dark chocolate . Next came the savory salt that had secretly melted in to the chocolate. Last was the smooooth soft luscious caramel. Perfectly sized with the amount of chocolate and salt. This is the kind of Carmel you don't chew. It just sat in my mouth for few minutes and melted away like it was made to do. Leaving me amazed and satisfied, wondering why I had never had these Chocolates before. Each little chocolate is home made locally in Altoona PA on a small side street. In a small quaint building with a small store front. On my way home to Orangeville, I decided to check out their web sight. It was so simple and user friendly. I decided to order Each of my BFF girl friends a small box as a thank you for them for being in my life. I received my order in 2 days, neatly packaged and perfect. This weekend at a get together, I gave them to my girl friends. As they opened the boxes, the aroma of chocolate lofted through the air. Each 1 tasted a chocolate and the ooooos and awwwws followed. I tell this story because the little shops with great talent go unnoticed, until they are sitting on someone's coffee table. If you have someone special in your life . . . I am telling you they would appreciate this box of perfect chocolates. #wortheverypenny #chocolate #MarCiaschocolate #Valentinesday MarCiaschocolates.com

This is an interesting setup with a small italian market and a deli counter. It looks like they do a lot of a catering based upon the view into their back of house. While we waited we picked up various speciality items. My son and I both ordered the 12" Pompeii's. This is one of their italian specialty cold cuts and comes with hot peppers. The meats and cheeses are boars head brand, sliced fresh and the sub comes loaded. The roll is a nice dense loaf. The hot peppers add a great kick! We both only ate half of our subs and had leftovers for dinner. They have various other hot & cold subs that we'll try on future visits. The service was helpful and super friendly. They were busy so it took probably 15 minutes to complete the process. Overall, it was a great sub and a welcomed change from the usual chain offerings. My only gripe is there's no in-store seating. If you're local it's a great takeout sub but we wanted to eat them immediately.
