Upon entering our private dining room we were welcomed with wonderful waitstaff, the girls were great! Our dinner choices included Sunday roast dinners ( chicken or beef) a roasted cod dish. Five starters incl chicken parfait, squash veloute and a roasted beets and goats cheese salad. Sweets included chocolate delice and apple crumble. Cheese course to follow. Unlike virtually any pub I have ever experienced in the U.K. you have to wait to be seated (as if it is something special!) and immediately you are seated you are asked what you want to drink - slowed her down so that I could look at the menu. Here was a big warning sign and I should have walked out - the menu was a mass produced thing from Marstons (the brewery serving many pubs in the area) and the name of the pub itself never mentioned anywhere. Not heeding the warning I went to the bar to order our food - no we have to wait until served (very quiet afternoon). Go and sit like a good boy and wait. Give our order and in record time the generic tasteless food appears. I expected so much more from a steak and prestige ale pie than what I got. I expected something like any decent pub in England serves - an individual pie, maybe puff pastry and lovingly prepared but what I got was (drum roll) two sorry thin slices of a larger generic pie of sorts fresh out of something (the microwave would be my guess) totally tasteless gravy, tasteless fries and peas. I had to drown everything in pepper to even get it in my mouth and saw another poor customer doing the same. My wife's fish and chips was the worst she has ever had in England - her thought was that it was all cooked in older fat? She also was liberally adding pepper. No one ever came to ask if we were enjoying our meal and we weren't even asked a word when we paid to hurry up and get out of the place. Would I return - absolutely not!

It proved rather difficult to find anywhere at about 3.30 - most places on the way only did lunch from 12-2, even on a Friday, so we were pleased to see George & Dragon serving throughout the day. There was a Friday special of two fish and chips for £14 - their other special didn't work on a Friday (which was a very good deal) - but I fancied the gammon and chips which was well cooked (as was my husband's fish and chips!) The irony of our visit is that I refused to pay 50p for a pub carpark in Lichfield which had meals for 2 for £10, but ended up paying over £2 for car parking in Ashbourne - and over £20 for two meals! We don't venture into pubs that much, but we were very pleased to find a real community atmosphere, with a warm welcome for everyone, from the two people playing pool in one area to the family with children having a soft drink in another.

For quality local food at seriously cheap prices and served by the most friendly staff I have come across . Nothing was too much trouble for them , the chips are unbelievable fresh home made and never seen a freezer in their life - so unusual these day's . I would recommend the daily specials Pork belly was amazing and the Cod was huge with crisp batter and real mushy peas. My friend had mushroom stroganoff with a rich creamy sauce and fresh herbs ,made especially for her as a veggie special . They lit the log fire just for us , the atmosphere was fantastic with a gorgeous bottle of Fleurie our log fire and delicious home cooked food we were in heaven and so relaxed. The only thing they didn't have was a bed for us to stay over , however they booked us into a nearby hotel and we returned for lunch the next day which was just as wonderful . WELL DONE TO ALL AT THE HORNS !
