I would go for the other one again if I would stay in Poole. This hotel is so noisy that I could hardly sleep. Normally I can sleep everywhere. There is a big dual carriage way on one site and an industrial estate on the other site. The rooms are a little bit dated compare to the other hotel. The hotel is wheelchair accessible (but no roll-in shower).

To begin with, I should point out that though I was born in the 80s, my sole knowledge of that or…read moreprior decades comes from stereotypes portrayed in television and media, which I don't know any better than to try and dispute. I stayed in The Chine Hotel as part of a training course for 2 weeks, and got a good feel for the place. And my impression was that it was kinda stuck in an era long gone-by. By that, I don't mean this is a themed hotel made up to look like the Golden Oldies era. It's more like it was built some time ago, and then just maintained, without ever a consideration for modernisation. Which is okay for some, but I like my style to be from.. this century. That said, the Chine Hotel does have most the amenities you're looking for - a decently stocked bar selling alcohol are slightly over-inflated prices, a buffet breakfast and dinner with lots of different options - nothing made exceptionally well, but nothing below par. And a cramped gym, adjacent to a slightly claustrophobia-enducing swimming pool. However, the rooms I stayed in (I stayed in a different room in the second week) were decent. The bedroom style was consistent - read: dated - but the rooms were large. The ceilings were high and you'd have absolutely no problem swinging around all the cats you can find. Though you'll find a flatscreen TV and a small kettle, there is no fridge/minibar or safe. The bathroom is basically a small partitioned section of the room with a wafer thin wall, but big enough to fit a normal sized bathtub. The service at the hotel was polite and friendly - they were welcoming and made my stay pleasant, and the rooms and general areas were clean and well looked after. Location wise, you're a little close to the unrecommended Boscombe area, which is well known for being the rougher part of town. You're are however, a stone throw away from the beachfront, which is via a nice walk through the hotel's gardens. Overall, though I wouldn't recoil in horror if I were to stay at the Chine again, if I were staying in Bournemouth again, I'd probably try out a different hotel.

It is having to compete with trendier, funkier bars and pubs. It is a landmark still though, as it is situated beside a large roundabout in the middle of Poole, opposite Barclays International. Nothing amazing though in reference to other hotels I have stayed at on this trip. Note: the floors here as it is an old building do squeak a lot, while walking across your floor. I attempted to negotiate a late checkout only to be told it is their policy that after Noon they will charge you 10GBP per hour after. No negotiating. I understand policy, but with foreign travellers, they should try. The hotel we were at last city, was very accommodating giving us a 3 pm checkout at no charge. And a much nicer hotel at that. It seems some of the staff are a bit uptight and non accommodating.

We have returned here many times, and each time we have been impressed by the standard of service and the quality of the facilities. However, the food in the hotel's restaurant has unfortunately been a bit hit and miss. Breakfast here is wonderful with a superb choice of dishes and excellent service (the variety of juices on offer is in itself impressive), but we've been less impressed with dinner on a couple of occasions - the execution doesn't quite live up to the expectation set by reading the menu. Don't let this put you off though - there are generally good deals to be had here for room, breakfast and dinner packages, and lots to do in the surrounding area.

We found the staff to be very friendly and they even gave us a lift back in the early hours as all the taxi companies had closed (it was a Sunday!). Wow, what a huge disappointment. Whoever did this hotel's website was brilliant at taking…read moreflattering photos and writing estate agent-ese in describing the place. This is the kind of place that gives English hotels a bad name. I can see easily how tourists will get taken in by the beautifully presented website and feel like they've been seriously ripped off when they get shown into their cupboard of a room, before being fleeced in the bar. A lot of people come here for the spa attached to the hotel. It's really not worth making a special journey. The spa is tiny, has very few facilities, and isn't all that relaxing, due to the fact that there's at least one door that slams itself shut very loudly whenever anyone walks through it. The spa dealt with, onto the hotel. We were put into what is basically an attic room, and a tiny one at that. To be fair, the website makes no secret of the fact that these rooms 'feature sloped ceilings'. It doesn't tell you, however, that you are tucked into the slope so much that even my wife, a tiny 5'0" woman, found it difficult to navigate around the room. For my part, I was unable to stand up to pee and anyone taller than an average two year old child shouldn't expect to be able to take a shower. For £135 per night (and they usually ask for a minimum 2 night stay at the weekends) you really expect much better, even at a hotel that thinks it's at the premium end of the market. On the positive side, dinner at the hotel restaurant was passable, if overpriced by 25%. The food was well cooked and presented, although I was very disappointed that when I ordered a side dish of new potatoes I wasn't informed that the main dish I'd ordered already came with potatoes. For anything other than dinner, travel into one of the nearby towns and avoid eating at the hotel bar. The tuna used for one of my open sandwiches tasted like it came out of the tin, and the crab mayo for my other sandwich was massively over-seasoned, to the point of being inedible (I'd have sent it back except that staff had disappeared, possibly out of shame). The biggest laugh came with the pretentiously arranged 'fat chips' that we'd ordered: 12 soggy chips for £3. The only reason this hotel gets two stars is because it really is in a lovely location, and I suspect if you're willing to pay through the nose, the more expensive rooms might be passable. The staff here are really friendly and willing. It's just such a shame that the hotel they're working at doesn't deserve them. If you want a good spa/hotel, Pennyhill Park (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/80859-Pennyhill-Park-Hotel-Spa-Bagshot ) is head and shoulders above this place.
