If you're looking for an idyllic, outdoor setting for a wedding, party, business retreat, etc.,…read moreHeaven's Grand Gate may be just the place. I was recently here to attend a friend's wedding, and I thought they did a terrific job. There's plenty of space for parking, tents, activities, even campers. An area closer to the front offers seating for events such as weddings, and gazebos and other picturesque settings for photography. The groom's mother told me the owners are really easy to work with, and the prices are quite reasonable. The views are incredible too. I expect Heaven's Grand Gate is in high demand.

This year was probably the grandest woodworking show I'd ever seen. There is really amazing local…read moretalent in the area and we come from a land of abundant wood and some truly amazing craftsman. I went with Tim, Ed and Mikey. I grew up with these guys and the woodshow is a big day out for us. We met at my house on Sunday and got liquored up beforehand as this is our custom and merrily walked to the newly revamped city center for the show. You can really get a bead on the economy from the woodshow. Last year was lacking in vendors and you could kind of tell nobody was spending. This year it was totally packed and there were vendors in great abundance and an excitement in the air that things were happening. All kinds of things were on display. Sandpaper, jigs, hand tools, power tools, exotic woods, new ideas and trinket innovations. There are lots of classes going on and in all this is heaven for the amateur woodworker. I bought a maple slab for my table and Mikey bought a beautiful piece of cherry. We all left with new ideas for projects and went back to my house for 4 pounds of shave steak on cheesy bread.

Luckily we found Tom and he just happened to have an opening for our wedding date as a previous appointment changed their date. From the moment we spoke to Tom, we knew right away he was going to be amazing and we were not wrong. He met with us the same day he initially called us. Yes he's professional and excellent at his job. Yes he is an expert at reading the crowd at the reception and kept the dance floor hopping all night. Yes he handled even difficult guests with aplomb and made sure our music was perfect. I lost count of how many of my wedding guests commented how great the DJ was - and he was just that, amazing. The moment we booked him, we immediately felt a great weight lift off of our shoulders and rightly so. All of this is wonderful but the bonus was just how nice and personable he is. We personally felt like we made a friend and enjoyed every single interaction we had with him. He is a pro, and he's fun. If you can book him, please do not hesitate as he fills up quickly and I certainly understand why. Tom - just thank you. You took our wedding above and beyond our expectations and you made it so much fun.

Go-karts are fun, squeezed two adults into a car and it malfunctioned but they let us go another lap so it made up for it. Lasertag had a lot of ground to explore and hide in, with a side room area that I saw a preschool girl and her family playing in, if you need a smaller field safer for a younger child. Minus one star for games being out of service, two bumper cars and a handful of lasertag vests broken, and they really could use lockers for storing shoes for bounce houses, purses, umbrellas etc as they just get left at the starting gates or hold onto them in the attractions.

Many of the attractions were not open (bumper cars, indoor go-karts, kids inflatable play area), and those that were tended to be underwhelming. The go-karts were fun, and the rides were generously long, but that may have had to do with the lack of crowd size despite the beautiful weather. The go-karts themselves were wildly different in top speeds, and your success on the track was based entirely on the kart you were assigned vs. any actual ability or strategy. No big deal for us, but there was, shall we say, a slightly more competitive family who were extremely annoyed by this, and were letting everyone in earshot know about it. Most of the arcade games were older and not in the greatest condition, with a few exceptions. What was oddest of all was that I found a roll of 5,000 prize tickets just sitting on top of a closed air hockey table completely unattended. I brought them back to an employee at the concession stand and there wasn't even a thank you offered. If it happens again, maybe I'll just the 5' Angry Bird. They also wouldn't honor the Yelp Check-in offer for a free game of Laser Tag. All in all, this place has seen some better days, and both boys enjoyed playing mini-golf at the place across the parking lot far more than they did playing at Adventure Family Fun Center, but you could certainly do worse if you're looking to kill a few hours with the kids.
