About 700 or 900 meters away from my house, on the outskirts of Armes, boarding Clamecy, a medieval…read moretown in the heart of Burgundy, or Bourgogne, as the French calls it, is a local bakery that opens before 7 am on New Year's Day. On my way to airport, I picked up cafe créme aka coffee with tiny milk, fresh pain chocolat, aka chocolate croissant, and an eclair. Been coming here a bit, it also serves sandwiches and salade, it is basic but the location is perfect and the baked goods are good. Better than most American bakeries, but that is not a fair comparison. For 3 chocolate croissants, 1 extra large chocolate croissant, 2 raisin buns (like cinnamon buns without cinnamon), 1 eclair, and 2 coffees, you will pay €11.65 or roughly $13. So yeah, 7 pastries and 2 coffee is cheaper here than you'd expect to pay in San Francisco.
I short changed my trip due to work. So I did not spend a lot of time comparing the local bakeries. But one can never underestimate the power of having local Bakery nearby, where you know the bread is fresh and people are kind. No one speaks English here, my French is not exactly passable, thus lots of hand gesture is required.
Most surprising is that they opened so early on New Year's Day. Well, bonne année!
