Botanic railway station serves the Botanic area in south Belfast and students for Queen's University Belfast, it also provides a useful transport link for the Ulster Museum. It is named after the nearby Belfast Botanic Gardens. It is one of the four stations located in the city centre, the others being City Hospital, Great Victoria Street, and Central.
The station opened on 4 November 1976 but since its opening has recently undergone a major facelift. Access for disabled travels has been increased with platform ramps being installed. This work was completed at the beginning of 2009.
The station itself consists of two sheltered platforms, the reason I mention the fact the platforms are sheltered is because many of Northern Irelands other railway stations neglect sheltering or provide inadequate shelter for passengers. One Platform operates services to Portadown and Newry and the other running trains going towards Bangor via Belfast central and Holywood.
The facilities in Botanic Railway station are also very good, it is located on a busy area with a 24 hour shop at the entrance and countless cafes just footsteps from the station. There are also ticketing facilities at Botanic and a few conductors on hand to lend a helping hand. read more
