Some of the administration were horrible and one actually made an Acquaintance of mine cry because they made a threat to tell their parents about the people they were hanging out with (despite them having no issues). The worst one for me is that I had an IEP and they had a meeting with me about it without my parents even present or informed. I wasn't 18 or an legal adult and they had no reason to do so. Unfortunately the group of good people there doesn't outweigh the horrible ones.

Long story short, Snowden is a fabulous high school.

Except for the ones at MCGS with whom I am lucky enough to spend an hour every Wednesday doing science projects. These kids are better all around than most adults I know. And from what I've seen, they wash their hands way more frequently. As corny as it might sound, the kids at MCGS give me a lot of hope. They are the best behaved, most thoughtful, and smartest scamps I have ever hung out with. They definitely put grammar school me to shame (girl was too busy matching scrunchies to Fila kicks to study). Best of all, they are cool and hilarious. The point is, this school is doing something very right. I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that it is basically a fortress. They're doing a pretty great job of keeping out the harsh elements of Mission Hill and getting these awesome kids to care about learning. They made me adore them, despite being children -- they're changing the world already.

The principal, Jose Duarte, is a really great guy - and he is very proud of his school. If you're in the area, ask for him to give you a tour. You will see and hear how much pride and love he has for this place. It's an old school - and it still need a lot of TLC, but it is making great strides to become even better. - The school itself can handle a much larger amount of kids then it currently has enrolled. I think there are about 90 students currently attenting - but the establishment itself is meant to handle a couple hundred. They are working towards becoming a high school, and they'll get there. The upward progress this place has made makes it easy to see that they will be a diamond in the rough that is Roxbury/Dorchester. - Some of the highlights of this place is the room on the third floor that was professionally re-done, as well as PCs for every student. The kicker is a giant touch-screen whiteboard at the front of the class. No markers, no chalk. Very high tech and very cool. The kids LOVE this and are 100% engaged in class when they are in this particular room. I wish all their rooms could be like this one. Up on the fourth floor is an old room used 100 years ago to teach young girls how to be good housewives. It's a cool piece of history you should see for yourself. The push towards college is felt here. Every effort is made to help these kids understand that education doesn't end after grade 8 or 12. College is where it's at. And there are a number of resources and reminders here keeping these kids on the straight and narrow. A BIG highlight is a that this place provides breakfast and lunch for every student. I forget if that is free or not - I'll have to check for you. But how great is that being a parent and not having to worry about that for your kids each and every day? - The kids - the kids are GREAT. You should see their faces. They love their school. It's great to see that pride that you'd think wouldn't exist these days. - Some of the hallways and rooms are unused, and they're working to rehabilitate them so that the school can expand. It's not easy, but they'll get there. - If you're in the area, I strongly urge you to get involved with this place. They welcome volunteers and help of any kind. It's worth it. This place needs and deserves it. There are a lot of jerks out there, and you know it - so make up for their immaturity and selfishness by volunteering here today!!!

Amongst our children this has been our third infant room experience (we've been at two other child care centers), and Diki has been the best. The teachers in the infant room are so enthusiastic, energetic, and kind, and take advantage of being in such a central location with frequent visits to the amazing nearby playgrounds, green spaces, and the children's room at the Cambridge Library's main branch. We appreciate how the head of the center fosters a sense of community through teacher appreciation and parent/teacher/child events. The teachers in the infant room (and other rooms) have been at Diki a long time and seem very committed to the center's future.

They constantly update the "My Bright Day" app throughout the day (not sure how they find the time to do it!) with photos and comments, so you feel fully engaged with your kiddo's whereabouts and what they're up to each day. Each of the teachers know my son by name, even the ones in the baby classroom who don't interact with him as often. The facilities are brand new and beautiful. The director picked out every piece of furniture and every toy herself, and it shows - each classroom has an indescribable homey feel. Our son loves the fish tank right in the foyer. The toddler classroom windows are higher up by the street, so you can easily look down and wave to your child after drop-off and on your way in to pick-up. It's very sweet to peek in and see our son. On the way home each day, he and I stop at the window and he waves "bye bye" to his teachers and classmates from the outside. I have also been very pleased by the variety of activities. The teachers take the toddler students to the park, create age-appropriate art projects, and sing songs during circle time. CCLC provides a morning and afternoon snack for the day. The children have an afternoon nap, and the teachers make sure our son has his "lovie" and favorite blanket. Finally, I really appreciate the level of individualized communication from the teachers. We get an information sheet about his day at pick-up. In addition to what you might expect (times of diaper changes, length of nap, etc.), there is always a full paragraph that begins "Today, I....." written from the child's perspective detailing some of the highlights of the day. My spouse and I love reading through these paragraphs in the evening - the teachers clearly pay attention to our son. I love hearing about him stepping in green play-dough, wandering away from the circle during singing time, and playing with the toy cash register. We also receive emails over the weekend describing our son's week (sometimes pictures, too!). One weekend a teacher emailed to check in and see how our son was feeling after he wasn't quite himself on Friday. I very much appreciate how he is treated as an individual and how much his teachers clearly care.
