Spring brings Hope but Fall brings the farmer's markets (or the Greenmarket) are now well stocked with lots of beautiful & fresh harvests. I am so lucky to have an office near the Brooklyn Borough Hall. The stuff is so fresh you just want to just slip it! This Greenmarket is not as big as Union Square Green market in Manhattan but the prices I think are better and the service is friendlier. I think veggies look so much sexier in sunny light then florescent light. Check out the photos, they speak for themselves.

I've been kind of insulted by saying how much I love farmer's markets, but I really don't care. As a foodie and a vegetarian it's the best of both worlds for me, and Borough Hall's own is by far the best in NYC. Why you ask? Well, while its mightily crowded on Tuesdays, on Saturdays its so relaxed and never gets as crazy as the Fort Greene one (aka the 'Dog Market' b/c of it's proximity to the park) and definitely not like the Prospect Park one (no elaboration needed). They're friendlier here too. And the veggies, the breads, everything is fresh and organic and tasty. I especially love the apple vendors as before I began eating fresh apples I probably only ate five apples a year, begrudgingly so. Now I'm Curty Appleseed! (wonk, wonk). It does help that I work Saturdays, but even when I didn't I went out of my way to make it to Borough Hall. Other than the apples, my faves are: tomatoes, greens, red lettuce, yams and potatoes (about to make one right now!), turnips, eggplant, spanish peppers, basil and those apple donuts. I wasn't expecting to list so many, but you'll probably do the same after you go.

Now I love farmers market in general but I love the Borough Hall Greenmarket even more because I currently live near it... plus it's in front of the beautiful court house in downtown Brooklyn. The best time to go to a market is obviously during the summer season when the weather is great and there are fresh tomatoes and watermelons everywhere but I love going during the other seasons too. During the fall, there are giant piles of pumpkins and I feel like a giddy child again. I heart pumpkins to death. There are many tents to look through for variety. Year round, you can buy loaves of freshly baked breads and other amazing goodies such as brownies, focaccia, and pies. I love just wandering through the market on a lazy Saturday looking at all the fresh produce, flowers, eggs, baked goods, and potted plants. I do not know why but I am just fascinated with vegatables and fruits; I often go into grocery stores just to roam the produce aisle for no other particular reason than to check out all the interesting shapes and colors. Farmers markets are no exception to this habit. Yes, I'm a little weird but I blame the artist in me. Make sure to bring cash as last time I checked these businesses aren't carrying card swipers. Oh technology.

On a gorgeous Thursday afternoon, this Greenmarket was the perfect place to enjoy a snack and the striking view of Borough Hall against the abundant sunshine. It's a small-ish market, with about eight or so vendors, and most are fruits and vegetables. One bakery stand offers danishes, pastries, muffins, and the like. More variety in type of stand would be nice, but each stand had a different piece of produce that stood out-- one had Jersey nectarines that were perfectly ripe, another heirloom tomatoes in colors I didn't know tomatoes existed (I got a sweet brandywine), yet another bags of golden zucchini blossoms. The bakery stand's crumb bun (1/2 inch cake, 2 inches of crumb) was $2 of bliss.

This is one of the better greenmarkets in the city. While not as vast as Union square the Borough Hall location has really lots to offer and more vendors each time I go. The produce is really fresh and lasts a long time. I love the selection of apples in the fall as well as the fresh meats and baked goods. I would recommend to go towards the morning when there is a better selection of produce. Some of the vendors run out of popular items.

Prepared food vendors include a couple of Mexican fruit stands and King David Tacos. I recommend the fish tacos. There are at least three or four vendors selling high quality produce, a couple of meat vendors including duck, and farm fresh eggs. There are a couple of bakeries and blended honey from Remsburger's. I've been obsessed with their cranberry honey! They give out samples and even have little pixie stix for the kiddies that are only a quarter. A surefire way to keep eager and excited that kids occupied while you make the rounds, lol. One of the farmers has tons of apples. Surprise , its New York state- but they also have apple cider and cider donuts which you can get plain or sugared. It's best if you go to them when the market first opens. That's when they're actually close to warm and tasty. Otherwise it's just dry and no amount of apple cider is going to help. For entertainment, there's usually a couple of bus game musicians. The last time I went there was a saxophonist and what sounded like a Appalachian fiddling group. Another time they had a marimba player and they were really really good. Check out the video!

It's open year round on Wednesdays and most of the year on Sundays (the last weekend this year was December 19th and they'll pick back up in the spring.) Wednesdays is generally the better day and I highly recommend the bakery for excellent baguettes and Stony Mountain ranch for killer bacon, sausage, fresh eggs, the best bone-in chicken breast I've ever had, and truly the cutest proprietor ever. (Off topic, but holy moly is he cute!) They also carry a wide range of other meats and I'm definitely going to grab one of their steaks or pork chops, soon! In the spring and fall, they have a great salad/lettuce vendor (usually on sale for 3 clamshells for $10), a mushroom vendor, and more vegetable/fruit vendors - including one who carries beautiful and reasonably priced flowers. There's also a great seafood vendor with the best scallops I've ever had, but they seem to appear more infrequently. I still do a big shopping at Grand Army once or twice a month to pick up flowers, seafood, and fruits and veggies during the cold months (when this market is pretty barren) but this little guy will always be my number 1.

(Because I care about you, dear reader.) This farmer's market is still a pretty good one. Unfortunately, we've lost Grazin' Angus (although, I'm told I should eat less red meat) and Divine Pickles (I miss those wasabi pickles), but there's still plenty of produce for you. All the tomatoes, greens, beans, nuts, mushrooms, cheese, eggs, flowers and other plants you'd ever want are here for the buying. You can also still grab: Tasty turkey sausage/burgers (and other items) from DiPaolo's. Crusty ciabatta (and other items) from Bread Alone. Whole chickens, primed for roasting. Duck bacon and/or rillettes. Burpless cucumbers. Overall, I've been happy with just about every purchase I've made here over the past few years. There was that one time that I bought an heirloom tomato that got crushed in the bag under other, heavier stuff, and leaked juice all over everything...I was sad about that. Then my cat decided to attack the other, $3 tomato as it sat in our fruit bowl. That was also disappointing, but he's a known asshole and we should've expected it. Anyway, what hasn't changed in the past half decade or so is that I think you should come here and buy delicious items from the vendors. Because the more you support the market, the more awesome vendors will show up. Therefore, by spending money here, you will really be increasing my quality of life. Sure, it'll be good for the whole neighborhood and the food industry in general, but let's be honest: I'm the one that really matters. ____________ *On the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket front. Greene Park, it is frustratingly crowded and sometimes just not easy to walk around and navigate. I realize they probably don't have other options, but it nonetheless discourages attendance or makes me rush through to get out of dodge as quickly as possible. The other nuisance I feel like they could have some control over, and that is how short the hours are/how early the market closes. I swing by around 12-1pm and most of the stands are closed or closing up. I lived for years near the two park slope/prospect heights markets and felt like you could still stroll in at 2-3 to a still-thriving scene (and more comfortably stroll!). There are a lot of great vendors and quality produce here for you once you wade through the crowds--lots of fresh fruit and veggies of course, but also cheesemongers, shops selling meat, charcuterie, bread, mushrooms... quite she smorgasbord. it ultimately feels a bit petty and silly to complain at all about having a nice farmers' market nearby.--I am ultimately grateful this spot is within walking distance of my home.
