I'm talking down-and-dirty, rubber-mats-on-the-floor-circa-Carter's-presidency, you-might-be-the-only-person-in-a-three-block-radius-who-speaks-English, the-sign-on-the-food-won't-help-you-because-it's written-in-a-different-non-Roman-alphabet-language, you-probably-won't-recognize-80%-of-the-food-that-is-being-sold, way in the backwaters of the city Chinatown. So. I needed fish. And so. I went to Chinatown. To GS Food Market, to be exact! Never mind the ridiculously awesome prices ($1 per pound for bok choy, $1 per pound for grapes, 5 oranges for $1, $1.20 per pound for a tilapia filet, $4 per pound for striped bass, $3.20 per pound for whole squid, etc.). Never mind the fact that you can pick the whole tilapia you want for $3.20 per pound. And when I say "pick" I mean you can point at the fish swimming in the tank and decide "hrm...let me play T-Rex and decide who shall live and who shall die." Never mind the fact that they clean the fish for you (heaven sent, I swear!). The reason you should come here...the REAL reason, deep down (and, yes, I am ashamed as a Chinky person to admit that this was the deciding factor in the five star review): They speak English. (Halllllllelujah! Hallllllllelujah!) Okay, so maybe it's more...Engrish. But yeah...ask for Mike the fish guy, and he'll take good care of you.

I come here for fish, and even though it is maybe 90% as fresh as what one can get in an expensive place like Citarella, the difference in price is so enormous that it is worth coming here instead. There are also a good assortment of fruits and vegetables sold outside, and in nearby markets. It has every kind of fish imaginable, a non-English-speaking but basically good group of people working here. ("Staff" may be pressing the point). So run, don't walk here. I mean that literally as walking from other neighborhoods is a decent workout. And then look around the neighborhood. There are other great food shops, other fish stores, though I personally prefer this one. Some of the other fruit/vegetable stands are just as good however. One warning if you're coming by car: don't. Just don't. There is meter parking, which is costly and negates the savings you get here. There is ZERO ability to just hover nearby. Too many of those damn bike lanes. I'd suggest either coming by foot or public transit. A subway stop on the IND line is right there. They will give you ice for your fish if you have a slight distance to travel.

Stores around here seem to close up early, which I assume is because of how gritty things can get. Apparently the nearby pedestrian underpass below the LIRR track is a streetwalker hangout at night, and K2 use has torn through the neighborhood. A TV episode was even filmed in the area, complete with a smoking car; let's just say it wasn't Girls. Back to the food: it's cafeteria quality and just ok, but it's one of the only options in the immediate area. In the mornings they have pastelitos, which are kind of like empanadas. I believe they come with cheese, beef, or chicken filling. They generally also have sausage, home fries, and fried or scrambled eggs, as well as some more specifically Dominican favorites such as fried cheese and mangú (mashed plantains). Some of their lunch staples include roast pork, tripe stew, stewed chicken, seafood soup, fried fish fillets, fried chicken cutlets, and bacalao (stewed salted cod). I think they can make a breakfast or lunch sandwich to order as well. You can get a good sampling of classic Dominican fare here, but if you're willing to travel a bit for higher quality, I suggest going to Fefita's.

At lunchtime this place gets pretty crowded and rightfully so -- they have a small area of steam tables with really good Dominican food -- fried fish, stewed chicken, pernil, rice and beans. My mom shops here, at times because its prices would be slightly lower than Met Supermarket nearby. The breads are fresh in the morning. We also come here for its cheap cat litter. Watch out for the dates of some goods. They recently replaced the sign of the grocery store, but inside is still pretty narrow cramped and dimly lit in some parts.
