Wonderful people, good hotel, we extended our stay from 1 night to 4. Only drawback is that to get to town centre, you have a steep 20 minute climb up medieval lanes and alleys. Quite testing but do- able. I'm nearly 69 and did it with 1 stop, which just happened to be a bar with cold beer! Don't forget it is downhill all the way back!

We we had a room that would have been perfect for a family but there were only two of us. There was one room with two double beds connected to another room with a huge king bed. Simple decor but elegant at the same time. Nice big bathroom, refrigerator in the room and a really nice balcony off one of the bedrooms. The outside area is where this place really shines! The view from the very large patio with tables and some nice wicker furnishings called to us at the end of a long day exploring. We would open up a bottle of wine and just gaze at the view. A very nice breakfast including eggs, cake, sereal, cake, fruit, cake, juice, cake and coffee and an assortment of teas. And did I mention cake? Seriously, they had about 6 different cakes/pies/pastries each morning! The proprietors live here as well and they aim to please. We didn't want to leave this place and would stay here again in a heartbeat!

It is on the second-floor, so we only had to walk up one stairway. The room had air-conditioning, which we only used when in the room during the day. At night we opened the window partially, enough to let air in. (The window is screened.) It was nice to awake to the pleasant sounds of the surrounding Orvieto families as they prepared for their day. Very clean room. Espresso maker and coffee provided, along with some snacks and juice. Valentina provides her guests with a "tourist card", which provided us discounts at the sights around town. It also provides discounts at some restaurants and services. A great benefit. Valentina also kindly made us reservations at the two restaurants we had selected.

It's like being a local as other apartments in the buildings are owned by locals. We had a quiet apartment on a small side street. It would have been challenging to find if Valentina's staff had not kindly taken our bags and led us to the apartment. Our apartment had a kitchen, dining table and rustic wooden ceiling beams. I'm guessing the wooden beams are centuries older than the US. The bed was one of the most comfortable we experienced during our trip. Food markets and restaurants were within easy walking distance. I highly recommend selecting one of Valentina's apartments that meets your desires! Each apartment is different and in a separate Orvieto location.

It was one of those "buy the ticket then figure out when you're going" situations (if anyone else does that...). Luckily, this wound up being a great decision. The Relais is the quintessentially charming Italian getaway we were hoping for. The staff is exceptionally friendly (and for the most part speaks nearly perfect English - a major plus when your Italian is as cringe-worthy as mine). They really were fantastic. Be forewarned, the resort itself is about 35-40 minute drive from the actual city of Perugia. There is basically nothing on-site except their passable restaurant and a small spa. It's perfect for people who really want to unwind, but not ideal as a home-base for touring the area. (One half-star off for this.) The restaurant on-site is OK, but honestly was one of our least favorite meals in Italy. (Another half-star off for this.) We wound up going down the street several times to a small place called La Locanda del Colle; you will absolutely need a reservation because it's tiny and DELICIOUS. My recommendations if you pass through and decide to stay in the area: brace yourself for the most unbelievable views, morning and night. It's truly breathtaking! Also, if you are looking for a wine tour, we really liked Gusto Wine Tours. They are local and regularly pick folks up from the Relais. (No Yelp page so just shouting out here!)
