Today started as a bad day, almost the worst. Something happened that affected all of my family, so after sorting some things out we needed to get away. So we drove, we got out of the city and headed towards what turned out to be a blast of nostalgia.
We had been to The Boot before, I don't know how long ago, but I am confident it has been over a decade. It's been done up a lot since my last visit, but it was still unmistakeable and held onto the character that made it such a perfect British pub.
The outside is what makes The Boot special, the sturdy tables and chairs look out over The River Test, it was beautifully clear so we could watch the small fish and tadpoles milling around. The earth near the river is interrupted with mole hills here and there, although that may not be something everyone considers a good thing, it made me feel more attached to the natural surroundings of the Inn.
Now onto the important bit, the food. As mentioned before, it was a bad morning, we all needed comfort, so we went for comfort food. There were many choices available, from scallops to liver, steak to rissotto, curry to salad. I had the sirloin, the chef even kindly swapped my mushroom for black pudding. It was delicious, the chips were homemade, chunky and amazing, they had perfectly crisp outsides and fluffy middles. My Uncle's curry came with freshly fried popadaums and a selection of dips, it had more in common with a curry from an Indian restaurant than the typical pub version. The waitresses also kindly catered for my very fussy gluten-free Nan, making her up a dish made up from bits and bobs across several dishes on the menu, fantastically helpful and kind.
The desserts were lovely, Mum had a fluffy, baked lemon cheesecake covered in raspberries, it was delicious. I had a mix of local (new forest) ice-creams, unable to decide on a 3rd flavour, I asked the waitress to surprise me, I ended up with three delicious flavours that contemplated each other beautifully.
For a lot of people food is just food. But today we all needed to get away and have a treat, the lovely atmosphere and amazing food allowed us to do that.
The prices at this pub aren't cheap, you'll be paying £15 - £20 for a main, but the portions are good and the food is fresh and flavoursome. If you want to go somewhere special but cosy, this is the place to spend your afternoon, especially as the summer comes along.
Thank you The Boot for making today have something good to reflect upon. read more
