The Eclectic Reader - A few pickups for a great price here!

A Ft. Collins Treasure…read more Tucked away in a strip mall in Fort Collins lies an unassuming sign that reads simply "BOOKS," an unremarkable moniker for The Eclectic Reader. I stumbled upon it while enjoying one of the first days of spring, and upon seeing the collection spilling out the front door, I had to take a closer look. Wall-to-wall books abounded, with familiar titles requiring a sideways or upside-down read. The formidable collection was a bit overwhelming, but as I've learned in life, too many books are never a bad thing. After just a couple of minutes, the mind settles and starts to loosely catalog the sea of texts. In some corners, there were "oohs," and elsewhere, "ahhs," but everywhere, knowledge - knowledge everywhere. Behind the desk sits Cynthia and her welcoming smile enticing you further into the collection. Ever-poised to provide service, she can often direct you toward your interest better than yourself. Beyond the friendly proprietor and investment in intellect, actual costs are almost always half that of the big-box stores. Heralded as an American institution, these bookstores are a waning, and we must do everything in our power to ensure their survival. Written records are dying, and every second, ten new digital formats are replacing them. I, too, am a champion for the cause of expanding resources to anyone and everyone who wants to explore literature online, but are we not responsible for preserving the hard copy? Simply put, I've never hugged a website, but I've pulled many a book tight to my chest, and a roller coaster of emotion carried me page to page - yes, I give them hugs. I've never handed off a website with an illegible word, blurred from a tear. And even as I write, my mind conjures images of my grandson "flipping" pages and identifying what was to be one of his first words: a ball. Let's not deny that the value of books is seldom monetary but always richly intrinsic. The cost of access and availability should never be a factor because the costs of doing without are beyond comprehension. But if you would like to make an honest effort at understanding, I would suggest checking out your local bookstore to find the answers.

I have spent many an afternoon listening to Irvin reciting famous poetry often in a true celtic/irish guttural historic essence of times gone by. We sit by the picture window reading and sharing our thoughts and words by natural sunlight in a delightful space of simple furnishings. Irvin always further sparks my thirst for knowledge of the world's famous poets and makes their writings and life stories more bright and real. Irvin never judges my limited knowledge, but is always willing to enlighten and educate my ever inquisitive mind. I am sad to say I will be leaving Fort Collins, CO soon and returning to CA. I will very much miss my times at Indigo Rose Books with Irvin. I consider him a true teacher in the literary arts and encourage others to take the time to get to know Irvin and learn from his vast storage of knowledge that he so unconditional shares with those who are truly interested. "Irvin, keep my chair available as I plan to return to Fort Collins, CO at least twice a year to visit with you, add to my every growing collection of words and voices that enlighten my heart and soul, and once again share and step into those times of the world's famous poets." With this being said I leave with a poem from "Emily Dickinson" whom Irvin encouraged me to acquaint myself with. I am most grateful to Irvin for doing so, as she is now my favorite and most beloved poet with her love of nature and animals that is so very close to my own heart. "I Have not told my garden yet, Lest that should conquer me ; I have not quite the strength now To break it to the bee. I will not name it in the street, For shops would stare, that I, So shy, so very ignorant, Should have the face to die. The hillsides must not know it, Where I have rambled so, Nor tell the loving forests The day that I should go, Nor lisp it at the table, Nor heedless by the way Hint that within the riddle One will walk to-day !" Some things to help you out inside the store:…read more Storefront: A sizable kids section in far right corner from the entrance. Books, games, puzzles, toys. Lego table close by, containing loose Legos for purchase by the ounce. A digital catalog is available to employees, but due to the "thrift store" nature of the store - lots of items coming and going quickly - it is not always reliable, but it is often a helpful tool. Most items have a "used item" sticker - large and white with an orange strip on top. Some items have tiny white stickers instead - these are "new items" and they are more expensive. If you can't find a sticker, it has probably fallen off and staff can price-check it at the registers. Most new releases do not come in the day of release. If they get them in at all, it will be afterward unless someone is really quick with read/trade-in, which happens. But usually not the place to look for a book that came out yesterday. My favorite things to buy here are used hardcover books, Funko Pops, and used video games. Great deals on games for older consoles, most Xbox 360/PS3 titles are $5-10. Bathrooms: In the far left corner from the entrance, hug the left-hand wall until you get there. Two gender-neutral, single-toilet rooms. Both rooms have baby changing tables. Returns: If you had your receipt and you're getting your return put back on your card, it'll take 2-3 days for it to be spendable in your bank account. Buyback: A drivers license/govt ID with address is needed to sell to the store. You must be over 18 or with a parent/guardian with an ID to sell your items. The store follows federal pawn shop laws. The license is used to create a profile for you which keeps track of your store credit. Store credit never expires and is usable nationwide. Payout options include cash, store credit, or you can decline the offer and get your items back. Store credit offer is usually around double the cash offer. Buyback is percentage-based from what the store will price the item at. Item pricing is mostly done by a computer program - extra research is done on items like Funko Pops, comic books, certain books, etc. using the internet. The best payout percentages right now seem to be on vinyl records (vinyl need to have inner sleeve or they will be returned) and Pokémon cards. (Loose Pokémon and Magic the Gathering cards are bought in bulk, but they are not always purchasing cards, so call ahead) An example estimate from buyback: Five hardcovers and six paperbacks will get you around $7 cash, $15 store credit. Items that are generally not accepted: Spiral-bound books, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, dictionaries/excessively large books, Harlequin/Silhouette romances, textbooks, magazines, PC games. Outdated health/diet/cookbooks (10 years). Outdated yearly sport video games (5 years). Most often, these items will be returned to you. Most of these rules are because these items don't sell/take up too much space in the store. If you have any personal information stamped/stickered/written inside your DVD cases and book covers, they will not be removed by staff before the item is made available for purchase to the public, so if that matters to you, take care of it beforehand. Checking Out: You will be asked about the magazine program. A free trial for two months of some big-name magazines. But with any free trial, you have to remember to cancel it before you're charged. I cancelled my trial online the day I signed up. Got my free two months, no problem. If you're not a magazine person, "no thank you". The Buyback desk has closed early before for various reasons, (though not often) so if you're traveling from far away to do a buyback order, it might be a good idea to call the store just to make sure. There is usually a 10% off coupon available through the text-to-mobile program, although I think you can only get it once. Text FTCOLLINS to 52219 and reply "yes" to the message to get sent a link. Tapping on the link will pull up a barcode to be scanned at the register. Cell service is iffy on this side of the shopping plaza, so maybe grab a screenshot of the barcode before you go.

My parents didn't know what to do other than to take the money because they are in dire need of help. They called me in tears telling me what happened. I would never recommend this store to anyone. When I called the store originally they sounded very promising and that is why I originally sent them over there. They are a bunch of talk and the worst people you can imagine. The store needs to shut down they don't help people they make it worse.

Just celebrating their first year at this location, The Midnight Oil oozes a nice place to slow down and enjoy book shopping, one of my favorite vices. Pablo was the primary staffer on this day, and he could not have been a better host. Full of bookstore information, humor, guidance about Greeley, and a pleasant personality. There are all sorts of sitting and browsing options, and I love their back room of those interesting banned books that some have decided to make their focus. It is filled with humor and sarcasm. The decor is simple but terrific, and the best element of it is the hundreds of books surrounding girders located within the central area of the store, a brilliant decorative move that lures you into the store and is such a spot-on feature.

Look for the Roasty's sign on 8th and head a couple of doors north and you will find the coolest bookstore! It is well organized and very well stocked. Books are sorted by genre and they have everything from DIY to Scifi. When I was there a half a dozen patrons were browsing the shelves and conversing like friends. There are chairs and a booth to sit if you want to try out your next read before buying. Used Books were priced by color code at $3, $6, $9, with discount available if you purchased three books within the price point. In the back of the shop was a nice kid's section where books were all only $1. There was a cute area for kids to sit and read as well.
