    Parking

Cute but small shop with anime figures and cards with a few 11x18 posters. Some prices were great with prices going up all depending on size and favorite status. Busy parking lot. Unfortunately no books. Fun place and if I want to find something specific I could spend hours.

A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT over the Little Tokyo location as it is at least somewhat organize in a manageable fashion. It's definitely a smaller shop and the parking lot it's located in is quite crowded and limited (whose brilliant idea it is to put so many restaurants and an entire food court with so little parking is beyond me), but it's nice to kill some time at or sift though things. In terms of pricing, I would definitely do my research before shopping, at any Bookoff, to be honest, since the only time I have ever seen a steal is at the Riverside location. $35 is WAY too much for a prize figure unless it's a limited run or out of print completely. There is more variety of what I saw here in terms of more rare or older items and figures in comparison to what I recently saw at Ecotown, but in terms of value and pricing if you are purchasing, Ecotown's got them beat. The items here are organized at the very least in categories with similar series being grouped together (K-ON figures together, Nendoroids together), and the smaller items are subdivided so the Poke'mon stuff is together, certain shonen series are sorted together (Demon Slayer, JJK, Tokyo Revengers, etc.), kawaii items and plushies are together, retro video games are together, and the miscellaneous items are set together and there is an attempt to categorize that too. For example the Oshikatsu ribbons for male idol/otome items are together, the mugs and cups are altogether, tin cans together, towels together, light sticks together, art books together, etc. It's by no means organized, say, at Animetopia's level, but this is a HUGE improvement compared to the overwhelming feeling that I've gotten at other Bookoff's for sure (aka perusing for 3 minutes and then giving up generally). We did purchase a small Chiikawa tin that had a couple acrylic chain charms and stickers in it for $7, which in terms of Chiikawa merch goes, a pretty good deal!

shelf of some niche little trinkets you can get (so cool omg !)

i been going to BookOff for a couple of years now here and there, and i will say i feel like their selection and prices were better and more negotiable in the past, though more recently in cases with the figures and manga, i'd say shopping online is a better option if possible since the prices are similar to Amazon at times, it's very fun to look at though! really something you have to experience for yourself if you haven't, especially if you have interest in niche japanese media from otome, rhythm games, and so much more :3

These are the two broken games that were sold to me. Please avoid purchasing these games

My review is based on my recent visit to this location. I will also be adding a review of the Little Tokyo down the line. I will start off by saying that I don't recommend shopping here and purchasing any merchandise from this or any book off. Book Off offers a wide variety of products determined by location. I came to this location to purchase some video games. Neither of the games worked, I had to return two days later to get a refund. Some better quality control would not only benefit the customers but also the company. In terms of quality control, the company could test games before trying to sell them to customers. Other retro video game shops do this, so why can't this company do this. Book Off, according to employees, work on an honesty system, meaning that if you sell merch to them, they trust you to be honest on if them game works or not. This system honestly is terrible. As for value in games they offer, I don't see any here, especially if you will need to return them when they don't work. The only positive thing about this location was that the person who helped me both times was kind but lacked any knowledge of certain products they sell. Avoid this place at all cost. This place will receive a single star since that is the lowest grade a business can receive on Yelp.

Maybe it's the proximity of this particular location to Japanese businesses or perhaps there's just…read moresomething about this part of OC, but I found this Bookoff to be a delight. Sure, the parking can be hectic sometimes. After all, there is a Tokyo Central right next to it, but that's what makes this location so good. You can spend hours perusing the aisles for some good finds but can take a break and get some Pocky or a bento or a Fanta nearby without ever breaking theme. What's even better is it feels like the employees enjoy working here. They greet you warmly when you walk in and that hospitality Japan is known for is reflected in this staff, even if they aren't Japanese and this isn't Japan; the spirit still carries. So does the nostalgia walking through the aisles. If you played video games throughout the 90s to now you'll see pieces of your childhood everywhere you look: a Super Famicom with Chrono Trigger for sale or a Vegeta action figure going Super Saiyan or the many mangas of Rumiko Takahashi such as Ranma 1/2 or Inuyasha. In encapsulates otaku culture through the ages well. Even looking for books of different genres and authors can be found, some new but most used. It doesn't mean they aren't good. It just means they're pre-loved. This means you can get a bargain for some books you might have been meaning to check out for a great price. They also have book sales all the time. If you feel a need to lighten your collection at home, whether it be action figure or games you no longer play, Bookoff buys them from you. It means your cash could go even further if you have things to sell. Though the size of Bookoffs in America does have me wishing they were larger like their Japanese counterparts they do pack quite a lot for the space they occupy. You can spend 15 minutes to multiple hours here, depending on what you're looking for. I say that means it's worth checking out. After all, the worst that can happen is if you don't find anything to tickle your fancy you can always go to Tokyo Central or IKEA right after.

I love this spot. It's one of the OGs, and I've been coming here for a long time. There are some…read moregenuinely great finds--plenty of $1 items, solid deals on DVDs, and every once in a while something really special slips through the cracks. That said, the pricing is all over the place. It's obvious they rely heavily on some kind of algorithm to assign value, and when it works in your favor, it really works. I've picked up items worth hundreds of dollars for a few bucks. But the flip side is rough--things priced at $100 that you could easily find for $10-15 elsewhere. That inconsistency is both the magic and the frustration. Selling to them is another story. They'll give you next to nothing unless it's something truly high-end, and even then, you're usually better off selling elsewhere. The margins are so far off at times that it really makes you wonder who's willing to take those deals. They do require ID and seem to follow the rules, but the reality is this kind of setup attracts people who either don't know what they have, don't care, are impatient, or are desperate. And yes, it also likely attracts people unloading stolen goods because they know the items are valuable, even if the payout is low. The store itself is very DIY. Nothing is cataloged, staff can't really help you with inventory, and what you see is what's available. Customer service is minimal--they're mostly focused on sorting and loss prevention. There's also an awkward dynamic between management and floor staff that you can feel when you're in there. At the end of the day, this place is a gamble. Sometimes you walk out feeling like you scored big. Other times you find something rare and exciting that's priced so high it might as well be untouchable. It almost screams desperation and lack of knowledge on the selling side--but ironically, that's exactly what brings in so much good stuff. If you know what you're doing and have patience, this place can be incredible. If not, it'll just feel chaotic.

I hope they're able to get the help that they need to help support their community, but I still stand by the frustration experienced when attempting to reach out multiple times.* I've spent a good amount of time calling this store trying to get ahold of a worker for clarification on a tournament they are holding. The phone doesn't even fully ring before you get sent to voicemail so I want to assume they're declining the call, but hopefully I'm wrong. Called since their opening and between the hours and still no luck talking to someone. They don't respond to their socials either. This feels very unwelcoming to new folks trying to stop by and support their shop. Unfortunately I cant comment on anything else from this shop as this was enough to deter me and my friends from wanting to visit, but it's great to hear from their community about their situation which clearly means their locals are happy playing there.
