The owner defaces vintage books and falsifies pricing. He deliberately blacked out the price on the cover, and numbers of the UPC barcode on the back, then stamped the inside and wrote in a new price: "$9.99 Org." I know he wrote it because I've seen other books there with that same handwriting. All his fantasy paperbacks are supposed to be 50% off original cover price. He charged me $5.67, but the real cover price that was inked out was $4.95 US. I was a loyal customer until those deceptive tactics. Makes you wonder how often he does this with other books and customers, doesnt it?! I'm taking my business elsewhere, and I suggest you do too. read more

My first time ever in this used book store. I believe the owner/manager was present and he was very kind , even offered me a small pecan pie! Thank you! There are so many Romance books. I wish there were more horror books for sure ! I'm so glad to came across the three books I purchased. The value of them wasn't too much and they are in good condition. This is my go-to store for books. My personal book preferences are not the same as my husband, son, daughter or most of my friends. But that's never an issue because the owner of the store always has great recommendations! I tell him what their preferred genre is and he always has a list of suggestions. I'll be honest that's no easy task when dealing with the diverse favorites of my group. Their faves are horror, adventure, manga, young female adult and more. While checking out, we struck up a conversation with the gentleman behind the counter, and he took the time to show us comics we hadn't heard of before. His knowledge across different genres was incredible, and it was clear he was just as passionate about them as we are. We also love that they offer the option to return books, almost like a library--it really makes this place feel like part of the community. We'll definitely be back! I came here to Book Nook during the holidays to buy from local bookstores instead of chains like Barnes and Noble or Amazon which I prefer to buy from but decided to give them a shot. My sister and I were greeted upon arrival and there were a few customers. I overheard the cashier explaining their deals going on about receiving store credit in exchange for books. They have a variety of books from Fiction, young adult, to children's board books to children's chapter books. None of the books have the prices on it and appear to be in decent condition...not at all I would pay full price for such books. Anyone after picking out about 8 books that I felt my nieces would like we go to the cashier and he did not inform my sister and I about the their book program even when he asked us if we were a member. The books for them to be second hand were expensive which I could have gotten better deals for brand new books at Barnes and Nobles or Amazon or my connect in Los Angeles that specializes in children's books at a discounted price. I will not return back to this book store and I will continue to go Amazon and Barnes and Nobles as it is cheaper for children's books. The books are new and better condition. I was not a fan of the customer service as I felt he could have sold my sister and I on their membership but didn't. You may have a better experience but I will not come back and support this local business. However it does have potential but not for me. read more

Ahh! I love this place! Why? Because the woman working here is lovely! She made our experience extra special. My husband and I came in looking for horror and she pointed him towards an area and brought me straight to the Stephen King area. She showed me what she recommended and what she not necessarily hated but preferred to steer away from. Lol At checkout we still chatted for a little while and my husband and I really enjoyed that. That is exactly what sets these books stores apart from the chain bookstores. read more

I come here on occasion since I want to support local stores. However, I have yet to buy a book from here. The prices are extremely high for used books, in my opinion. I often spend my money at another local used store or online. I keep coming back thinking that maybe there will be a book that I just have to have or maybe the prices will come down but it hasn't been the case yet. I'm also never greeted beyond a "hello" when I enter. I read other comments that spoke about memberships? I've never been told anything about this. read more

It really is a "nook". The place is tiny. Most of the store is devoted to Romance Novels. Fresno-nians must love Danielle Stelle an Jackie Collins. What I like about this place is the buy-back policy on books you purchase from their store. When you buy a book, a 3rd of the cover price can be used on your next purchase. Which basically means you're going to get a percentage off your next purchase. A great incentive if you're an avid book buyer living in Fresno. I wish I knew a place in my neck of the woods that adopted this same concept. read more

I see people complaining about the prices and it's very silly. The books are HALF the original price. That's a great deal. They are all used but in very good condition. Also, you can return the books or bring in books you don't want anymore and you get credit towards your next purchase. I think this place is the best. The shop owner is very nice and he will talk to you about books for forever. His knowledge about all different kinds of books is really cool. It's nice to have a bookstore owner that genuinely cares about reading. There is a big range of books to choose from and he posts pictures of new arrivals on social media every once in a while which I like. 10/10 would shop again. read more

I've been coming to this book store for years! Love this place. The prices for the books are VERY easy to figure out. They are HALF what the cover price is or its listed on the inside. The books are in great shape and the cost is more than decent. There is a LARGE selection of book in many genres, so its easy to find something that suits you. I come here first to find a book, before I hit up the big name stores like Barnes & Noble or Amazon. It's a plus that I get to walk out with the book I wanted right then, instead of having to wait for delivery. The store is clean and the staff are friendly, considerate, and very helpful. Great selection of both paper books and audiobooks. Great prices on everything, good buy-back policy too; more so if you bought the book from them in the first place. I'm impressed that a small used-book store is capable of maintaining a database of books that they can order for you too. I believe it's the owner, but at least one guy who works there KNOWS his books! Let him know what you're into, authors, genres, etc. and he'll be able to suggest new reading for you off the top of his head. That's amazing! Considering the size of the shop, The Book Nook has an amazingly diverse selection of books. There are clear focuses in the Romance and Fantasy/Sci-Fi genres. I don't know if that is because of the personal preferences of the owner or just a sign of his customer base, but regardless, the place is wonderful. The books are 50% off cover price and in many cases you can find older editions of books with lower cover prices. They buy back books for store credit at 25% each, if they decide to accept them. I have found many great books at wonderful prices and I have been very glad to see that their Graphic Novel section has expanded. The service is great, the guy loves to talk about certain authors and books and he is a really nice guy. I've seen a women there once and she was a wonderfully pleasant woman. Both of them ought to be happy since they've got the bookworm's dream job! I highly recommend this shop to anybody looking for inexpensive books at least for a monthly visit. Their stock is ever-changing and I have heard them offer to put people on waiting lists for newer books. read more

My husband and I love this place. A large selection of Fiction in a variety of genres. They are very friendly and always helpful. We often stay for an hour talking books! They have kept an eye out for books I'm looking for and call me when they come in. Awesome! We've traded some books in and it is a great deal. They can't take everything. I found this place when I was at the hotel down the road. What a breath of fresh air, the very kind lady walked me through the store explaining how things were organized and laid out. So just to start, I'm a fan of history, sociological, and political books that document or examine our world. I went to the Book Nook looking for books like this, and found them sorely lacking. Don't get me wrong, the service was nice, the woman at the shop was so sweet, and there were a few books worth glancing at, but overall, the store is inundated with fiction novels and romance books and things of the sort, and I wish there'd be more of a balance so as to appeal to a greater diversity of tastes. read more

I love this place. I come here all the time. The prices are great (everything half the retail price, with some good deals on classics and hardbacks), the selection is great (both old and new) and the staff is very helpful. I've also noticed this place seems slightly more organized than a couple of the other used books shops I've been to around here, so that helps. I like that they'll stamp the books you buy from them to guarantee that they'll buy them if you decide to come sell them back (not that I ever do this... I am a book hoarder. It's a problem). I only wish that they would let you set up an account without having to sell them a book first. I would love to be able to be notified when certain books I'm looking for come in :) read more

The moment I walked into this little store I felt at home. It was stuffed full of books and tight corners to squeeze through. I ran my fingers down the long rows of spines that ran along the four walls. I breathed in the smell of pages and pages of worlds waiting to be discovered. The man at the counter sat and talked to his customers about the books they purchased and recommended others that he thought they would like. I appreciate a man who knows his books. I left the little bookstore with a skip in my step and longing to turn around and live in between the shelves that were squeezed into the small space. Or open one of my own. I'm a romance reader & this shop has one of the better selections of used books I've ever come across in the used world. They also have a pretty decent audiobook section which I love to pick through since I spend a lot of time driving back & forth from San Diego. read more

I love going here every time I'm in Fresno. I went in with a couple dollars in my purse and left with a handful of good stories in the form of a discount book. I was a loyal customer for more than 15 years, and hey they used to be my neighborhood bookstore. Always, if they stamped the book then you could take it back and get credit for new books. The new owner decided he will no longer honor this and told me that the new looking book that I brought back had a broken spine and he wouldn't give me any credit for it. I had to open the pages to read it and I kept it in the condition that I had bought it, and he put his stupid book nook stamp in it, lowering any resale value it might have had. He just lost a loyal customer, and you know what, it's a rough economy. I hope he goes out of business because he is NOT honoring his customer agreements. You can get books cheaper on amazon, or have better customer service at borders or barnes and noble. The politi library is just down the street at bullard and first, do your reading for free. This man clearly doesn't deserve the loyal customers that the previous owners cultivated. read more
