My wife was visiting one the local museums and I happened across Book In Bar when I was on the prowl for an excellent latte and some relaxation. To my amusement I discovered that this shop/cafe has an extensive English selection, but I had no problem finding some smart looking French volumes to read as I sipped my superb coffee. This is a book store that caters to Readers of English. Do you have a good selection of books in English and in other areas they have some books in several other languages. They have a small café where you can order tea, scones and the like. You place your order at the counter and they bring it to you. You pay at that counter or at the bookstore counter at the front of the business when you are done. There is seating upstairs were many of the foreign language books are. It is an enjoyable place to have a snack and read. A lot of students hang out here. They do expect you to purchase something if you are going to occupy some of the tables. read more

What's not to love? This two-story bookstore in Aix is a cool, delightful haven with friendly staff and a coffee bar. We were able to get books for my sons and ourselves - they have everything here, all in English, just in case you didn't pack enough to read while you're traveling. Prices are a bit high, but totally what you'd expect for English books in a non-English speaking country, and they always have a great selection of books at half-price. We went to Book in Bar several times during our two-week stay in Aix, and there were always expats, students, and travelers sitting with their computers, sipping a coffee, and enjoying the vibe. read more

A very charming bookstore!! I love books--even the way they smell. This place provided a nice getaway while I was exploring the beautiful crooked streets of Aix. I didn't try any of the drinks or goodies, unfortunately, but there were plenty of locals in there to convince me that they were tasty. Stop in for the vibe or a cup of coffee. This friendly bookstore is a reader's delight. Enjoyed the wide collection of English books, the excellent coffee bar (lots of other great drinks) with treats, and the relaxed atmosphere - just as a bookstore should be. There's never a rush to get you out the door. I lived in Aix for five months, bought a fair number of English books from Book in Bar and when I was about to leave, took my English collection back to them for a rebate - large enough to purchase a book to read on the return flight home. Wow, I will never come back to this place again! My friend and I often came there to study and do homework while having tea. It's such a cute and cozy place; perfect for students. Just last week, we came in with the same intention; to study and have tea. We found a table upstairs, and before we even got comfortable enough to order, we were told that we were expected to buy something (food or drink) or we would be moved for people that were buying something. My friend and I have spent quite a bit of money at this bookstore, and the girl knew us, so we were extremely irritated that she had the nerve to say something like that when she knew we would've bought something almost immediately after getting settled in. I won't be going there again, and I have told other students that I go to school with about my experience there. read more
