While enjoying the national holiday today, the birthday of Benito Juarez (whom originated from Oaxaca) this was a perfect respite from the heat and to begin a night of debauchery. Right outside was a wonderful elderly lady at an Alote stall- corn with cortija cheese from the region. It's a very old and very rare tradition that is slowly disappearing . It is small bar but big enough for a group of people. There are loads of cocktails, different types of beer (local artisan and national beer) and some great snacks. I especially like the local artisan beer: Totopo and the tacos with Jamaica flowers. The vibe is really good and the music not too loud. More than that, I appreciated that the staff member who was working when were there was wonderful. My Spanish is so-so, not fluent by any means, but I can follow a conversation. We were one of two groups at the bar in the afternoon one day last week, and the staff member spent a lot of time explaining the mezcals to us. We did two separate tastings, and she told us about the origins, production method, and flavor of each of the six mezcals we tried. I really learned quite a bit from her! And after we were mezcaled out, she made us a few cocktails that had some sparkling water in them for a bit of a refresher, some necessary rehydration (she also made sure to refill our water often).
