And so, given that there were places around that we really liked, and that looked like you might actually have a good meal in them, we hadn't bothered. So, we make mistakes. The name, both the Quechua and Aymara word for either a hawk or falcon, is also a fairly common altiplano surname. The place looks just like the sort of place that you'd hover at the door, trying to decide if you really wanted to enter and subject yourself to the service and food that is to come. As I said, we make mistakes. The place is no real hole-in-the-wall, it easily seats a hundred and some folk, and apparently in the evening, does so with others waiting for tables. They're famous amongst those "in the know" for their spit roasted chicken, which we didn't try, not knowing that the day we wandered in - and several local amateur critics commented that nothing else was worth bothering with. So we're not the only ones who make mistakes. These days it's gotten a bit touristy and pricey. One thing we hadn't done is tried their lunch menú, so a week or so ago we stopped in and gave it a shot. Good soup, lots of vegetables, a little meat. Choices of a picante de carne, a quite good stew of beef, potatoes, peas and carrots; and, an ají de gallina - this one a little weak in the flavor department. It wasn't bad, it just needed more umph. And, Mamaní's 100 peso price for their menú puts it up in the higher priced ones. Overall, great marks for truly traditional homestyle Peruvian cooking, friendly and reasonably efficient service. Ambiance, más o menos as they say here, but when digging in to this kind of food, who cares?

Turned out a couple of Food tours were arriving soon. Lucky we were ordering takeaway. Smaller spot with just about an equal amount of in/outdoor seating. We ordered a couple of the Guest Chori's-The Juan Pedro Caballero (pork) and the Carneceria (beef). Juan Pedro had tortilla chips and peppers and the pork chorizo sausage was saltier than the beef. We ordered a Chimichurri sauce on the side and enjoyed it. We liked the Pork more than the Beef-just was more flavorful. The Bread was thick, soft and held up to the Choripan and condiments well. Potato salad with al dente potatoes was tasty. They also have beer and cocktails so ordered a Gin and Tonic while we waited for our order. Friendly people behind the counter. Food was ready in about 15 minutes. That said, I can see they could get busy and have longer wait times. Make this stop for local grilled sausage deliciousness.

They served mostly chori and one morci (blood) sausage sandwiches but with a twist with their toppings. You could get just the sandwich or combine with side and drink. I picked the Invitado Juan Pedro Caballero and the cashier hesitated before entering the order as she wanted me to know it was picante. I assured her it was not a problem and then paid with my credit card. After a short wait, they called my name and I picked up my choripan. it was quite the handful filled with layers of roasted peppers, tortilla chips, onions and lettuce. The tortilla chips were stale but overall I liked the flavors especially with the heat from the peppers and chipotle mayo. It was a nice twist on the popular choripan.

With prompting from friends who love the place, we'd revisited it a couple of months later and tried a couple of items off the regular a la carte menu and found them both to be good, but still expensive for what we were getting in both quantity and quality. It more or less went into the "okay but nothing more" pile. We decided to give this place another shot. The plan was a light dinner, three of us started off with splitting an order of anticuchos de corazon, grilled, spiced beef heart accompanied by potatoes in a reasonably spicy chili cheese huancaina sauce. Definitely good, so that was a plus to start the evening. We each ordered a different type of ceviche - a clasico, the simplest preparation, with white fish in a straightforward lemon and salt cure. Well balanced, though lacking in spice. On request they brought a dish of pureed rocoto chilies, fiery and delicious, which perked this one right up. Also, a mixto, fish and shellfish, the same cure, and also quite good, though needing a hit of spice. And, one of their selection of leche de tigres, in this case their Callao, which comes with a curing liquid already packed with rocoto chili, some fish and red onion, and topped with fried chipirones, baby squid. Best of the three dishes, and the only one that came already spicy. The anticuchos run around 200 pesos, the three ceviche dishes close to 300 each. That's not bad for good quality and quantity ceviches, but these are still, for me, just good, and the quantities are pretty small - they're definitely appetizer sized portions. They charge a cubierto, and are pretty much the only Peruvian place around that does. They do take credit cards, but now they only take Visa. Service is friendly, but a little... pushy. It might be that if there weren't a dozen other Peruvian restaurants within a two block radius, several of them equally as good, and less expensive, that this place would hold a higher attraction for me, but for me I'd still make it no more than just recommended and not a place I'd set out to go to.

It's a great way to learn about a country and it's good. A nice way to meet new people. Often, the food tour guide will also recommend other restaurants (gems or where locals eat) one must try. Anyway, Parrilla Doña Tota is named after Maradona's mom. This resto is really an hommage to Maradona. There are pictures of him and his family everywhere. My husband abc I ate both Argentina (futbol) fans so we were stoked! You can tell this place is a local fav. It's a casual and the staff were so nice and welcoming. We had several dishes to include: steak (of course - when in Argentina, you have to eat steak), fries, the dulce de lèche flan was out of this world delicious). Other local dishes we had was the Morcilla (black pudding sausage), and tortilla de papas (potatoes with eggs dish). I definitely recommend this resto. It was reasonably priced as well. Oh and we enjoyed the wine, specifically the Malbec.

The service was immaculate, everyone was very friendly and welcoming, we happened to walk in right during a slow day, and it was perfect. The ambiance is very cozy, lots of paintings of prominent Argentine figures such as Carlos Gardel and of course Diegito. I highly recommend coming to dine here, the food is well made and the wine selection is very nice as well (We opted for Coca W/ Fernet since we were on our way to watch Futbol)

Or at least ostensibly. In truth, they've just sort of fancied up some of the Peruvian homestyle dishes and then offer a separate sushi menu. Literally separate, they bring you two different menus, one of Peruvian food and one of sushi rolls. Went there on a first visit with a new friend who's thinking about moving to BA and made it a sort of "getting to know you" lunch. The room is very cafeteria-esque - gleaming white with touches of color but very plastic feeling. Service was friendly, but a touch condescending - inquiring about what made a "causa arequipeña" particular to that region, the response was, "it uses a special sauce that you wouldn't know about, but it's good". An attempt for more info yielded nothing. Turned out to be ocopa, about as ubiquitous a sauce on local Peruvian menus as huancaina. Now, we continued to hear about the place over the following weeks, so my partner and I decided on a followup lunch, as well as, it turned out, a followup dinner, in that there was a folklore music show being held there one night that he wanted to go to. First off, totally didn't attitude from the staff, and even the same waiter - did they get their groove on finally, did he remember I'd been there before, was it that I was with someone Peruvian? Not only friendly, but talking about the food and the restaurant. And the same on the third visit. Overall, we like the place, service is generally pretty good and now definitely friendly. Prices are higher than most of the Peruvian spots in the Abasto neighborhood, but the quality is significantly higher as well. Personally, I wasn't impressed with the sushi roll, but I also only tried one out of the list. There's no question that the spiciness of the dishes is toned down, probably for local palates more than anything - but then, the majority of guests on three visits were Peruvian - I doubt they really have to. Then again, I didn't see anyone but us asking for hot sauce on the table, so maybe.... I'd say, stick with the real Peruvian dishes, which they do really well, and skip the Japanese attempts, which at least based on a small number of dishes, they don't. Big plus for taking credit and debit cards, nearly unheard of in most more casual Peruvian restaurants (despite it being federally mandated that restaurants here accept cards, the vast majority still don't). This place goes onto our list of favorites.
