The coffee I had was strong and flavoured like none I had ever had before - sharp, but not too bitter. Sweet, but not sickly. Perfection in a cute little white mug (with a tiny little handle). This place is cool, but still comfortable, with only a few seats dotted around the tiny interior. It's simple, but effective and very much has a modern and sophisticated feel about the place. The staff we lovely and friendly - just as I like em - and were happy for my friend and I to sit leisurely with our coffees and chat, which is nice considering their lack of seating (they could be in a hurry for a quick turnover, but they were not pushy at all!). The food looked to die for, but sadly I did not get a chance to sample any of it this time around. I'll be back to try it, and to grab myself another one of their fantastic coffees. There's only room to seat about 10-15 people at the same time but it's worth making a special trip for the great service, friendly atmosphere and excellent coffee. The beans are ground fresh on site and both the normal and decaf coffee are from the London independent - Monmouth Coffee Co. Coffee. So far, I've tried the espresso, the cappucino, latte and americano and they were all sublime. For those feeling peckish, there's also a small but mouth-watering selection of home-made brownies, muffins, shortcakes, carrot cake and toasties. If only more coffee shops were like this, I'd hop, skip and jump down the street....

After a long walk from Brighton Marina to the Pier, and a lot of shopping in The Lanes, we were ready for an Afternoon Tea! This Tea Shop is in the heart of "The Lanes", a picturesque location amidst brightly coloured shops, cafes and restaurants, in narrow, winding alleyways that make for a unique shopping area. It was lucky we went in at 4.30pm... They close at 5pm, but we were welcomed in as one of the last guests before they announced they were closed. It also meant we not only got a table, but the place started clearing out before we'd finished, so we ended up being the last customers, which was nice. It's a cute, cozy little tea shop, pretty on the outside and inside, with pictures of Brighton on the walls and an eclectic mixture of teapots, milk jugs and cups. It had been many years since I'd last had a "cream tea" and this didn't disappoint. We ordered some fruit scones and some plain scones (both were yummy but I recommend the fruit ones - the raisins & sultanas are really plump and juicy!). We also tried our scones both ways - cream then jam (the Devon way), and jam then cream (the Cornish way)... I'd been brought up the Devon way, but discovered the Cornish way is actually more to my liking! Both were yummy! We didn't buy any cakes, but the cakes (as well as the scones) are made fresh daily and looked delicious. And I must say, the tea itself was fresh and superior quality - loose leaf English breakfast, rather than bagged, really makes a difference. Our server was very sweet and friendly, and then, at the end, since we were the last customers, the shop owner came out to talk to us, and was super friendly and welcoming... She asked where we were from (always fun, as I'm British, but my husband and daughter are American). Despite it being the end of her day, she didn't rush us out at all, and enjoyed chatting with us. I usually go for a flat-white, and my partner a soy flat-white. They've never curdled the soy so far, which can be kinda tricky so top marks there. The thing that keeps me going back there is the baked goods, their sour-dough breads are amazing, especially the seeded one. And the pastries are superb, definitely try the bear claw, it's like a pain-au-chocolate filled with pear goodness. The staff are usually spot on, except if you get there first thing when they look a bit sleepy on a Saturday morning sometimes, but so am I at that point ;)

My local SBCC sits on the corner of Norfolk Square and is a welcome addition to one of the less grand regency squares currently undergoing a transformation. All the sites have a distinctly hip interior that you'd expect from a seriously cool coffee house. Personality can be found in the nod to local attractions, such as the pavilion domes in the shop signage and the beach hut mural on the Norfolk interior. If you're after a speedy verdict, THE COFFEE IS AMAZING. You can now move on. I had a cappuccino that came in a generously sized cup and finished off with a heart motif. The heart did look a bit like an onion, but that's ok. I love onions. The taste was rich and warm and a cut above your regular coffee on the go. The reasonably priced drinks come in at around £2-£3 and the tea is just as lovingly brewed as its flavoursome coffee brother. If you fancy a nibble there is an array of cookies, cakes and hot snacks for between £1.50-£3 that are fresh and tasty. I opted for a slither of brownie. I've been tricked by brownies in the past. It's hard to talk about, but they've been deceptively brown yet distinctly lacking in choccy goodness. I'm happy to report that this sweet treat was moist and rich. Phew. So whether you're a connoisseur or after a quick quench, be sure to stop here and have a cup of the hot stuff.

It's spacious and comfortable and is a great place to start the day, with a nice cup of tasty coffee in your hand. Coffee places can sometimes be quite cramped, noisy or busy places, but Small Batch doesn't feel like this at all. The big windows and spread out tables make for a really open feel to the place - leaving you with enough room to relax and not feel as if you're sharing a table with the people sitting next to you. Now, I'm very much a basic coffee kinda girl! It's usually no milk, no froth, no fancy beans! I'm not ashamed to say that I can't especially tell much difference between my coffees and will happily drink even the cheapest instant coffee and enjoy it nonetheless. That being said, the coffee in here really does taste different. It tastes real, if you will... It's strong and flavourful and, honestly, I'd worry that if I stopped off here for long enough I'd soon after never be able to drink my beloved instant coffee ever again. The one pitfall of this place is their lack of wifi. I had just settled myself down with a hot cup of coffee and a opened up my laptop to begin work, when I realised. Ultimately, it's not the end of the world. There are plenty of cafes nearby with wifi available and, in a way (as long as you're expecting it) there's something rather charming about a coffee place where you can't connect. Use this as you time-to-relax coffee spot, rather than your work-away-from-work area.
