Given supply issues still impacting supermarkets you can 9 out of 10 times find an equivalent here. Big range of herbs, spices, ingredients, both local and imported. Staff are friendly. The ambiance is enhanced by the huge variation of people who shop here. Broad cross section of the community. I would hazard a guess, if you know this place you will come back repeatedly. If you don't know this place pay it a visit.

Bulk Foods stock a very wide range of products, including dried fruits, nuts, organic products, flours and cereals, and all sorts of international food I'd never even heard of. Pepperdews, pomegranate molasses, Ceres organics muesli for only $9 and literally the biggest jar of gherkins I have ever seen - Bulk Food Savings was a delight to explore. I was stoked to find pure vanilla extract and vanilla pods in this store - they were much cheaper than at places like Nosh, and are great to use in baking. The only downside of Bulk Foods was the staff. They weren't particularly inviting nor were they very friendly, but hey - when the variety of food is that good and the prices are so low, who cares? You can't have everything! Bonus: It smells fantastic in Bulk Foods - all the different spices merge in to one mouth-watering fragrance that instantly inspires you to cook delicious Indian curries.

Saffron Foods in Henderson came recommended by my auntie, then I discovered my Indian friends frequented it and so I had to pop in to see what all the fuss was about. Now I am a fan. I find the selection of spices to be amazing, they have the star anise and the cinnamon sticks, different coloured mustard seeds and variations of paprika and chili powder. My spice rack is fragrantly filled to the brim thanks to Saffron Foods. When here I cannot resist the bulk bins with everything from coconut threads to almonds, here's a secret they have the best bargains on almonds in this store. There is a lot of Indian, Pacific Island and other ethnic food, like bags of small dried fish which my girls found disgustingly smelly. To the rear of the store are pots and other cooking implements. Super friendly staff who are really helpful pointing you to the right direction.

They also sell saffron for $10 a gram. It is from Kashmir and from what I could tell it is a long good quality saffron. Also the selection of Indian groceries is fantastic. I bought several packages of Mother's sauces and maked one which was just delicious (the bf rate if better than take out). They even have Indian cooking utensils, kebab skewers and serving dishes.

I was a big fan of this place when it was Payless Food Bazaar but it has recently changed hands and…read morenow I'm not so sure. The fresh produce has been reduced drastically, to the point where it should be removed altogether. No one wants to see lonely fruit and vege. The hot food Chaat where you couldn't help but buy hot aromatic Indian snacks has gone but even worse, all the cabinets and counters are still there to remind you what you're missing. All international grocery products have also been taken away so now the range is exclusively Indian with literally two bottles of soy sauce in the whole place, no sushi supplies, noodles or anything else not from the Subcontinent. It's all very well being altruistic but surely diversification is a good economic decision? Maybe they only have an import line from India. Whatever, it's disappointing as this place has a carpark out the back and used to be pretty convenient. The nice man behind the counter tells me they are considering a hot food takeaway counter but I don't think Sandringham needs more lukewarm pre-made curry. You can get cheap two-for-one milk and this is one of the few places where you can get a green and a blue bottle in the deal - what can I say, the little things make me happy. I'm not sure how to feel about the rodent traps because at least they are trying to catch the little buggars right? I'd just rather not know about it. The absolute best thing about this place is the masalas - you need never struggle through attempting a curry at home again; there's a spice mix for all your favourites and many you've never heard of at around $3 each. The clue is in the name I guess.

Although I had noticed it in passing I guess I never really paid much attention to what it was all about, it looked like just another dairy with all the milk signs and vegies spilling out onto the footpath for sale. Inside however I was delighted to find some bulk food - spices, grains and nuts, in good quality (I can tell the freshness by the smell of the spices, colour of the dahl and appearance of the nuts). I love to cook, but this year have lost the passion for it, feeling like it is more of a chore than a pleasure. So, in the last few days I have tried to reinvigorate the foodie in me by puling out some interesting recipes. Tonight it will be a tandoori chicken with lots of vegetables and rice. I bought a bag full of goodies from here today and it all cost less than $10. The staff, and a regular customer whom happened to be a chef that passed on some hints to me, were very friendly and helped me feel a bit more at ease in a new and quite foreign shop. Ohhh, and conviently next door is Muhammad Halal Meats, AND they have large traditional middle eastern rugs, very nice indeed.

As well as more specialist items, they also stock basics such as milk, flour, and the like. If you cook a lot of rice, you can pick up 10kg or 20kg bags here pretty cheaply. I think they may have new owners or managers, as recently I went in looking for barberries, which I've bought from them before, and the shop assistant vowed that they did not have them and didn't keep them in stock. Please bring back the barberries!
