So last night, we continued our search for a 5 star pizza here in southern Germany. As a Canadian…read moreexpat currently in Germany, I am always looking for pizza as good as that of my home town of Ottawa.
This is what I look for in a top-rated pizza:
- a perfect crust that is not soggy in the middle, not too thin, not too thick
- fresh, flavourful ingredients that are CUT UP SMALL
- plenty of mozarella on TOP of the other ingredients
- a spicy pizza sauce (not just ketchup or canned tomato paste)
- taste taste taste!
So, Antica Roma - a little restaurant in the pedestrian zone of Kirchheim unter Teck.
We arrived fairly late in the evening, and were seated outside. Not very many customers at this point - only a few tables outside were occupied.
After a fairly long wait, we received our menus, which were quite difficult to read due to the fact that there was no lighting other than from a street light down the way. The hubby and I both ordered Capricciosa Pizza - mine without salami but with extra mozzarella. We also ordered wine and bottled water.
After another lengthy wait, our wine and water arrived. The resto only stocks Italian wines and my dry white house wine was really nice.
So about the pizza. The pizza did not have any prosciutto on it - none that I could find. Instead of bits of artichoke all over the pizza, there was a quarter stuck in the centre. 5 whole black olives were placed on the pizza. The pizza sauce was tasteless and seemed to consist of a thin layer of canned tomatoes. Due to the fact that the cheese was placed on the bottom, the fresh sliced mushrooms were dried out and without taste.
Overall, I found my pizza to lack taste, despite the fact that it was liberally covered in hot peperoncino peppers. A disappointment for sure.
