    BU ten year anniversary
    Jessica H.

"Came for the glute iso workouts, stayed for the endless benefits from lifting." I joined BU hoping to grow my butt, and stayed for the numerous benefits gained from strength training, many of which aren't visible. Confidence, mood boosts, friendships and increased bone density are (unexpected) things I gained from this gym. I'm thankful to Francine and Jason for creating a special space for women to grow physically and emotionally. I recommend trying the free week to see what the hype is about :)

I don't have time to write a long well deserved review this place beyond deserves (but I will for sure one day soon). Let's just say this place is my haven my body and soul needed, mentally and physically. I regained confidence, and after 6years of sacrificing everything day in and out for my son and husband (which I still do lol), I am starting to find me again. Love the women and community, love the workouts--takes out the guess work, and I feel better and look better than I have in years. But sis trust me, don't guess and procrastinate coming, just make the jump and start today!

BU what a game changer! An all woman's gym with a right at home feel. It's my church before church on Sundays and what gets me through the week feeling great and smashing goals. No matter where you're at in your work out journey this gem of a gym with hands on personal training and classes filled with inspirational women will significantly impact your life. Ladies your first week is free!

I've been attending Body University for about a year and a half and it's the first gym that I've ever consistently attended. I've always felt intimidated at other gyms, but the staff at BU are incredible, welcoming, and so very kind. Every trainer helps to modify to our individual needs and fitness journeys, and I do feel more comfortable that the clientele is all women. Classes are small, focused, and own just so much fun. I've made great friends and actually enjoy coming to work out (most days- let's be real). I feel stronger and healthier! Love my 5:30 crew!

BU gym, a great place to work out!

Love this gym, for women by women! Great place for your workout. Friendly instructors, and amazing women.

This gym has been life changing for me in so many ways. I started at absolute zero - no muscle, no self confidence, no gusto, and over the last two years have experienced a total mind and body transformation. I put on over ten pounds of lean muscle and now feel stronger and healthier than I ever have. I am so grateful for this gym - the trainers are awesome, vibe is great, women are encouraging, and music is bumping. It feels like home to be honest. Now, for the first time in my life, I look forward to working out!!

I love coming here! The ambiance is so uplifting and empowering for women. All the trainers are incredibly kind and welcoming. Francine is especially amazing, she's so inviting and knows how to push you out of your comfort zone in the best way possible to help you grow and reach your goals. Highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a supportive and motivating environment!

If you're looking for a women-focused gym that emphasizes strength, health, and confidence, I highly recommend checking this place out. Definitely one of the best fitness environments I've experienced! I have been coming for over 1.5 years & love it!

I have been a member for over two years, and I can't say enough good things about Body University! This gym is for all ages and fitness levels. No matter who you are or where you're starting, you will thrive here. The trainers guide you without being intimidating. The members create a welcoming environment without being overwhelming.

WARNING: Body University may cause increased strength, improved mood, and an unhealthy addiction to post-workout endorphins. From the minute you walk in, you feel welcomed, motivated, and challenged in the best way possible - and the energy is contagious. Whether you're a beginner or already a fitness fanatic, BU makes you want to keep showing up. Strong bodies, good people, great atmosphere. Highly recommend!

    Gym

Body University is a female-positive space for women to learn to lift heavy in a supportive environment. Facility is clean and other women here are friendly. Trainers are helpful and modify any exercise depending on your ability. Come and check it out!!

Absolutely love this gym! The workouts are amazing and I'm already seeing body composition changes and positive results in a short time. Trainers are incredibly knowledgeable and the environment is welcoming

I like the central location to East County and other areas, the diversity, the upper story. The building used to be a movie theater! Came here after a summer job in a warehouse. I wanted the compliments to continue. The goal was just to work out. But I keep coming back for other reasons. Or if my sister nags me to. As all the superb staff know, it gets busy at this location. Bicycle class with Lupe keeps me active Monday, Gentle Yoga with Dalal is amazing. Gotta hand it to Jose for helping out and managing things to help us enjoy the gym better. Appreciate Jess for the friendly customer service. I really hate to name drop. But in general, the staff make you feel like a rockstar. As you age you become the difficult customer you dealt with when you were younger (or not that much). Thanks for the attention, thank you all gym staff, Alex. Also to all gym staff past and present. As I've gained weight and my back tightened I've moved to the bicycles more. That all could change. Yoga/stretching helps. I've tried some new machines and exercises. Gave up some. Earbuds go in so I don't stare at you. Music really helps to get lost in and motivate the workout. Say "what's up" if you can, mention the Yelp review. I highly recommend CHUZE if you want an affordable gym in the La Mesa / Lemon Grove region.

After signing up, I discovered that the showroom and dark room were accessible to all membership tiers, eliminating the exclusivity that justified the higher price. Additionally: The sauna has been out of service since my enrollment. The frost room has not been functioning properly or reaching effective temperatures. I have not used this membership. When I attempted to resolve this directly with management, including speaking with Keanu Latinette, the interaction was disappointing. Instead of maintaining a calm and professional tone, the conversation became unnecessarily confrontational. I was simply requesting a reasonable downgrade consistent with the services actually being provided. Rather than working toward a fair resolution, the gym continues pursuing substantial charges. If you are considering the Premier tier, verify amenity availability and exclusivity in writing before signing. Transparency and professionalism matter.

I absolutely 100% love this YMCA they played a huge part in my life! As I came here for at least 15 years of my life :) I used to come here pretty much all day long. I'd lap swim when they opened up. Then i'd go workout and lift weights. From age 11 to 18. The staff were always so friendly and helpful. Then once I was an adult I'd only came to workout and lift weights. Then we moved out of SD. We came by to check it out because it got a huge makeover. Looking good John Davis Family YMCA! You still have very friendly helpful employees and a well maintained facility! Because of my awesome experiences here at this Y. I made a promise to take my kids to the Y. So we had all our kids become Y babies too. All of our 5 children learned how to swim at another Y because all of the YMCA's we've been to are family friendly. So a huge thanks to the YMCA of LA Mesa CA for being AMAZING! One of the biggest advantages is being able to get in, get my workout done, and get out without dealing with long waits for machines. I visit several YMCA locations depending on where my errands take me, and this location has always been a convenient stop for an hour-long workout. Unfortunately, I've had two separate interactions with the same front desk employee that left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. About a week ago, I was sitting in the pool area taking an emergency phone call. The area was completely empty, and the facility wasn't scheduled to close for roughly another 40 minutes. The front desk employee approached me and abruptly stated, "We are closing, I need to lock this area." To be clear, I had no issue with the area being closed or needing to leave. My concern was entirely with the delivery. As many of us know, it's often not what you say but how you say it. A simple, "Excuse me, we're preparing to close this area and I need to lock it up," would have been perfectly fine. Instead, the tone and facial expression came across as unnecessarily harsh. I gathered my belongings and left without argument, but even the person on the emergency call immediately asked, "Who was that?" after hearing the interaction. When I explained what had happened, they also commented on how rude the tone sounded. I've been a longtime YMCA member and have visited many locations over the years, and I've never left feeling the way I did that day. Then during a more recent visit, I brought my two teenage sons with me. After scanning my membership card, the same employee stopped me and asked, "Who do we have here with you?" while looking directly at my membership profile. My sons are listed on my account, and their photos are visible on my profile. I answered with their names, but she repeated the question louder. I then repeated their names louder as well, and only then did she respond with, "Okay." The interaction felt unnecessarily confrontational, especially in front of my children. They are 15 and 17 years old and more than capable of confirming their own names if verification was needed. The exchange felt awkward and embarrassing, and even my sons immediately asked me afterward, "What's wrong with her?" I honestly didn't have an answer. I want to be fair and acknowledge that I don't know this employee personally, nor do I know what may have been going on in her day. However, after two separate encounters, I do believe there is room for growth in how members are approached and spoken to. Sometimes when people become comfortable in a position, customer service can become mechanical, and the human element gets lost. I would also be dishonest if I didn't acknowledge how the interactions made me feel. As an African-American woman, I couldn't help but wonder whether there was an underlying bias influencing the way I was being treated. I hope that is not the case. However, the contrast between these private interactions and the otherwise welcoming atmosphere of the YMCA left me questioning whether I was being viewed differently than other members. With that said, every other staff member I've encountered has been kind, helpful, and accommodating. The YMCA itself continues to be a wonderful community space. I love seeing both the older and younger generations working out together, participating in programs, and building a sense of community. That's one of the things that makes this location special. Overall, I still appreciate this YMCA and everything it offers. However, these experiences have made me reconsider when I visit. Going forward, I may choose to come earlier in the day or adjust my schedule altogether if these interactions continue. I genuinely hope this feedback is received in the spirit it's intended--not as an attack, but as an opportunity for improvement. Great facilities are built not only on equipment and programs, but also on how members are made to feel when they walk through the door.

It's a little far from me in the South Bay but I knew I had to try it. For parking, the lot is shared with other businesses so when I got there, it was full and parked in the lot down the street. I wouldn't suggest to park in front of the NXPT if it's the games classes since we're using wall balls near cars. When I found the class on classpass for Wednesday night, the name of it was a little confusing because it said "OCR/Games/Hyrox/Deka" so I didn't really know what that meant until I showed up to the class to learn that depending on when the next event is, that is the type of training they're doing. So my class focused on the Hyrox because the Anaheim event is in five weeks. Hannibal is the trainer and he was friendly with a quick introduction and had to jump on a call before class started. I asked around to sign the waiver and got someone to help me. I wanted to make sure that didn't slow me down starting the class on time. Thankfully I do strength training and hot yoga outside of this class so I felt I could keep up but having been to new classes before, they seem to take care of newbies with just a few more instructions. I ended up figuring it out and maybe the style of this gym is no hand holding but I ended up asking other attendees in the class about the structure. Most of the moves in this class were standard but when it came to Sled, I wasn't sure in my form. I'd suggest when they get newbies in these games classes to ask them if they've done anything like this before and if not, show them the proper technique of the moves. That helps in the actual events since form matters and also prevents injuries. Overall, it was a good experience and I'll be back!
