During a recent trip to Australia, we had the pleasure of doing a special tasting with James at…read moreGiant Steps. As a fan of Pinot Noir and liking Chardonnay that is not heavily oaked, I loved all of the wines. We were treated to 3 single-vineyard tastes each of both varietals. We ended up taking back a whole mixed case to California. Thank you, James!

They know how to make delicious wine and have two ranges pitched at slightly different markets - The IB range pitched slightly younger or for what I like to call "Tuesday night drinking" and the Giant Steps which is high end, special drinking and what I like to call "stash it away for later" kind of wine. Each range offers terrific value and you can try both when you visit the cellar door, though the GS tasting will set you back a tasting fee of $10. On top of great wine, these kids know how to cook (pizza, shared-dishes) and know that to keep people happy you should keep them fulfilled with coffee (they roast their own), cheese (the have an amazing selection) and sweet treats (check out their take-home cake and pastry section). It's a massive venue, but don't go assuming you can just rock up unannounced. Giant Steps is hugely popular, particularly on weekends, so do yourself and your hungry family a favour and make a reservation well ahead of arriving.

There was a wedding going on, and I can totally see why as it is truly a beautiful location. We came on a Saturday and the place was packed for lunch. Our large group was able to get seated and we ordered the Zonzo Festa, which comes with three courses. We were quickly served the antipasto plates. The meats, prosciutto and salami, I believe, were both very well flavored. There wasn't too much cheese, though, and the bread was just fine. I wish it would have been served with crackers instead. For the pizzas, we had to wait almost an hour. Even though we were a large group, I didn't really expect it to take this long. We ordered the Pizza Alla Salsiccia, which had a pork and fennel sausage. This was very well seasoned and was definitely my favorite. The Pizza con pancetta was also well flavored. Finally the Pizza con Sporessa had salami on it, which was good but quite spicy! The meal ended with slow cooked lamb with potatoes. We were all pretty full already, and this wasn't necessarily a "light" dish, so it did seem a little weird. The lamb looked really good, but was pretty tough. The potatoes were nicely cooked, but I think we were just all too full to really enjoy it. Overall, the restaurant was yummy! However, service was wayy too slow, and we were not expecting to spend close to 2.5 hours eating. One of the groups was also only served two pizzas, though everyone else got three as part of the Zonzo Feast. There aren't too many places to eat in Yarra Valley, so this place is definitely going to stay busy, and I would say it's still worth going for the food and atmosphere.

It took a good 15 minutes for our waiter to see us, but once he did food and bev service was quite quick. We were at Zonzo for about an hour and a half. Will definitely be back.

Sometimes change isn't a good thing…read more Wombats chai serves as direct evidence for this cause; a little grassroots hideaway, that probably hasn't changed since it opened. It dosen't need to. This Healesville cafe, settled off the road by a motorcycles repair shop is one of a by-gone era, and reminds me of something outta a beat generation novel. A scene could be written in here, or at least substituted. Wombat's Chai use mainly organic or locally sourced produce, a lot of which you can take home with you. It's also run by kind folks who want to run a home style cafe, and that's it exactly. home style. No polished tiles and feature walls, no interior decorated design graduates' vision expressed as a " Immersible and interactive modern art and cultural dining experience, expressed by maximsation of natural lighting, and geometric patterns utilised to enhance the panoramic absorbion of natural views" or something like that. Just a simple old fashioned cafe in an original space, just being what it is; good food to it's masses without being pretentious. Genuine service on a home front and nothing more. You're welcome to stay a while.

Today I had poached eggs with a generous side of avocado and spinach accompanied by a cup of traditional chai tea - a must have as it comes in a proper teapot with organic honey and is the real deal when it comes to chai. I also tried my friends hazelnut hot chocolate which was delicious. Definitely worth the walk to the end of the Main Street, despite being a little tucked away this place is a gem and holds a big place in my heart. Even if you can't afford a coffee pop in for a hello and get a suspended one!
