Pedro Ribas de Cabrera, ancestor of the current owners, started in the year 1711 the construction of the winery. Today, they host wine tasting along with a sampling of local Mallorcan products. A high percentage of the Majorcan grape varieties Mantonegro and Prensal are grown here in accordance with the family tradition. Bodega Ribas is also known for recovering other native varieties from the island, like Gargollasa, which was practically extinguished, and that now complements the other varietals. We sampled Ribas de Cabrera, Grape varieties:55% Mantonegro, 40% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; Ribas Negre 2012, Grape varieties:50% Mantonegro, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; and SIÓ Negre 2012, Grape varieties:50% Mantonegro, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The clear winner this day is Sio Negre. This wine, made mostly with grapes from our old Mantonegro vines, was conceived in the year 2000 as a tribute to their grandmother Sió. Elegant, fruity and deep wine with a mineral base from the calcareous soils of the vineyard. Aged 12 months in 50% new French oak and 50% second year French oak. Alcohol: 14,5% We bought some bottles of Sio and carried on with our wine tasting adventures. Strongly recommend.

Grape Varieties: 40% Manto Negro, 35% Syrah and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvested in small boxes of 10-12kg. The grapes are selected by hand and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks of 1000 and 2000 gallons. After 20-25 days of maceration, the malolactic fermentation takes place in cement tanks, the other part in wooden barrels. Aged 14 months in medium toasted oak barrels. 90% French origin and 10% American. 75% of which are new and 25% second use. Alcohol content: 15%. The nose on this was like fresh crushed fruit, giving way to a mouth that was full and lingering on the palate. The price was under $15 and it is a shame we cannot get this in the US.

We enjoyed every one of the 6 wines she poured, which is rare at any winery, and she paired the wines nicely with a spread of traditional spanish tapas and these amazing dark chocolate truffles that we asked to take home. She even treated us to a barrel pour of a new wine that had yet to be released! Felt like absolute VIP's and this visit was the highlight of our trip to Mallorca, would highly recommend scheduling a tasting!

Hundreds of hectares provide the Majorcan wineries with Denomination of Origin labels. The best known winemaking region is categorized as D.O. Binissalem, comprising the municipalities of Binissalem, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Santa Eugènia and Sencelles. These lands have been producing excellent harvests of local grapes for more than five centuries. Bodegas Macià Batle is located in Santa María del Camí (Majorca) and contains the latest facilities and developed 70 hectares of vineyards. They provide tastings and a winery tour. We tasted the reserve tinto, the crianza and the rosé. The clear winner was the 2012 Crianza at 11 Euros per bottle. It is a blend of 50% Manto Negro and 20/20/10 Cabernet/Syrah/Merlot, with 10 months in barrel, and then 14 in bottle. It is 14% alcohol, showed more legs than any other wine on the island. Harvesting takes place in late September based on a selection of 25-year-old vineyards in the Binissalem - Majorca D.O. The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting the clusters with the smallest fruits. It has an intense cherry red with brick red reflections. Ripe red fruit nose with spices such as clove and pepper. On the palate, it is potent and flavorful with an intense aroma. Smooth tannins well-blended with wood, although the smoothness on the palate would improve after another year in the bottle, we enjoyed many bottles of this during our time in Spain. Great value wine.
