It…read moreis located in one of the listed stately homes from the 18th century that has been preserved intact to date, with its original historic barrel cellar and winemaking warehouse. Pedro Ribas de Cabrera, ancestor of the current owners, started in the year 1711 the construction of the winery. Today, they host wine tasting along with a sampling of local Mallorcan products. A high percentage of the Majorcan grape varieties Mantonegro and Prensal are grown here in accordance with the family tradition. Bodega Ribas is also known for recovering other native varieties from the island, like Gargollasa, which was practically extinguished, and that now complements the other varietals. We sampled Ribas de Cabrera, Grape varieties:55% Mantonegro, 40% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; Ribas Negre 2012, Grape varieties:50% Mantonegro, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; and SIÓ Negre 2012, Grape varieties:50% Mantonegro, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The clear winner this day is Sio Negre. This wine, made mostly with grapes from our old Mantonegro vines, was conceived in the year 2000 as a tribute to their grandmother Sió. Elegant, fruity and deep wine with a mineral base from the calcareous soils of the vineyard. Aged 12 months in 50% new French oak and 50% second year French oak. Alcohol: 14,5% We bought some bottles of Sio and carried on with our wine tasting adventures. Strongly recommend.

The soil is red clay, sand and limestone. We tasted the Rose, Rossat 50% Merlot and 50% Mantonegro. We tasted the Cabernet Sauvignon. We tasted the Cup Son Prim. This was the winner. 100% Merlot. Alcohol: 14.5. Malolactic Fermentation: Stainless steel tanks. Barrel aging: 12 months in oak barrels 50% French, 25% Hungarian, 25% American. This process gave the Cup a wonderfully complex mouth without the extra tannins that we experienced with the other two wines. Cup is acknowledged by the owner as their effort to provide a ready to drink wine while still maintaining the other wines for their aging potential. Llabres is to be applauded for his product balance.

We enjoyed the LAU ROSA (rosato) and the award-winning ANGEL NEGRE (Manto Negro, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon). Since we already had purchases from six other wineries with reds that were very closely matched with these, we chose to buy the BLANC DE BLANCA (Chardonnay, Prensal Blanc) at 13% alcohol. It was bright and clean on the palate. it was the only white wine we bought on the island of Mallorca, which is famous for its white wines as well as it reds. Hundreds of hectares provide the Majorcan wineries with Denomination of Origin labels. The best known winemaking region is categorized as D.O. Binissalem, comprising the municipalities of Binissalem, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Santa Eugènia and Sencelles. These lands have been producing excellent harvests of local grapes for more than five centuries. Bodegas Macià Batle is located in Santa María del Camí (Majorca) and contains the latest facilities and developed 70 hectares of vineyards. They provide tastings and a winery tour. We tasted the reserve tinto, the crianza and the rosé. The clear winner was the 2012 Crianza at 11 Euros per bottle. It is a blend of 50% Manto Negro and 20/20/10 Cabernet/Syrah/Merlot, with 10 months in barrel, and then 14 in bottle. It is 14% alcohol, showed more legs than any other wine on the island. Harvesting takes place in late September based on a selection of 25-year-old vineyards in the Binissalem - Majorca D.O. The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting the clusters with the smallest fruits. It has an intense cherry red with brick red reflections. Ripe red fruit nose with spices such as clove and pepper. On the palate, it is potent and flavorful with an intense aroma. Smooth tannins well-blended with wood, although the smoothness on the palate would improve after another year in the bottle, we enjoyed many bottles of this during our time in Spain. After sampling their Crianza and Negre we chose to buy the Encobeit. Encobeït is a Majorcan word for welcome with love. Encobeit: 15% alcohol made from the indigenous variety Mantonegro of vines over 40 years. Harvesting is done by hand selecting the best grapes. The fermentation takes place at 28 ° C for 20 days. Aged in French oak barrels of fine grain for 6 months. Nose: varietal aromas predominate; candied red fruits, floral notes (rose) and hints of toffee. Palate: Smooth entry, satiny with ripe tannins. Mineral notes marked by the terroir are appreciated. It highlights its long persistence in the mouth that continues to remind primary flavors: candied red fruit. Local villagers came in with their empty bottles and jugs and got them filled for about 2 Euros per liter. One lady came with an empty 2 liter Coke plastic bottle. Love the local color of these places. Wish I lived down the street.

He rebuilt the existing agricultural building into an exclusive winery with modern winemaking technology. The entire property covers an area of about 16 hectares, which is largely divided by 500-year-old dry stone walls. It is one of the most beautiful sites for a winery that we have seen in our visits to over 200 wineries. The hospitality of the staff is awesome. For a visitor to be pampered while enjoying the views - this place gets 6 stars. They seat you in a patio area that overlooks the valley. They immediately start pouring their offerings along with local culinary items of meat, cheese and bread. The cost is negligible and the service is passionate. With the above as the setting, we were plenty disappointed to discover that the wines are made in a very Old World style - High tannins, heavily oaked and not ready to drink. We really tried to like the Cabernet Sauvignon, "Stairway" rosato, Monte Sion (Syrah/Cab), Shiraz and the Cava. Since we really didn't have the right palate for the wines, we thought that the Cava (sparkling) would at least give us a chance to buy a bottle before leaving such wonderful facilities and energetic staff. Sadly, even the Cava was too hard on our palates. These wines are made for European palates which are raised on this style of winemaking. .This is a very worthy place to visit, but we purchased wines at six other wineries on this day and none of the Castell Miguel wines were to our liking.
