I try to avoid this place when I can. The selection is huge, but the big problem is the prices. Things are a little expensive here, but the major issue is that many, many items do not have a price on them! Especially in the drink section. This is compounded that when you do ask the price for items, you usually get an angry reply, and if you don't like it you have to walk the item back to where you found it and grab something else.. Then that might be expensive too! Either lower your prices or don't be upset when people ask you about them. I would not recommend. read more

I've read really mixed reviews on here, some people (to me) are spot-on, and other ones are just a bit too dramatic, though funny... This place is what it is: a locally owned & operated, slightly over-priced (as expected), neighborhood convenience store. It's a little dirty and run down, but that's expected. I love Bob's!! I've lived in the neighborhood for about 6 years and I have always enjoyed the store and the owners. Prices are high, but whatever. It's cheaper than Arco. Also, I can find everything I ever need. Seriously. From eggs, to wine, to super glue and toilet paper. They also have the Asian brand ramens that I like. The owners are awesome. The main guy that we just call "Bob" is always smiling and glad to see me when I come in. We even talk about my hobbies on occasion. The wife is a sweetheart, as is the other dude that works there. Whoever has bad things to say about this place is just plain stupid. I love going here and will continue to do so until I leave he neighborhood. read more

My experience of Bob's Handy Pantry is one of convenience & comfort in neighborhood familiarity. I must be a weirdo, because "Bob" is always welcoming to me...even nice! We live close enough that he sometimes strolls past our place while (seemingly) stretching his legs during the workday. He has actually complimented us on random work we've done on the yard/house. Let's talk about the business now. People: who walks into a convenience store expecting anything short of outlandish prices?? Right ... convenience = $$$$$. The surprise at Bob's is that the beer prices are damn close to those at New Seasons, Safeway, or QFC... and many of their other prices are about the same as those big box stores. And yet I only have to walk a mere few blocks for that beer. Hooray!!! Oh, and I buy premium coconut water (super pricey stuff). I am grateful that Bob's carries it (can't find it in major grocery stores like Safeway & QFC) and I'm even MORE grateful that the price at Bob's is just about the same as anywhere else I can buy it. I don't expect much from a convenience store and Bob's has never let me down. BTW, some time ago he even hired on some down-on-his luck kid for a while to do odd jobs. Seemed like the kid wasn't really necessary to the store, but there he was working. Seemed like the kid appreciated it too. Like it gave him a place to be and to work. I hate leaving sour reviews. but 'Bob' makes it necessary to count your change after the transaction because seems all to ready and willing to short-change you. I've been shorted anywhere from 5cents to $1 before. I used to let it go but now I demand exact change. Even just the penny. It gets two stars because it is a stones throw away from where I live. it has saved me from having to make a trip out the neighborhood many times. Thank you Bob! read more

I like this place. Not for its cleanliness or it's prices but that the owners are very nice and it pretty much has everything you need. It's a neighborhood store thats locally owned and its right around the corner from the house. There stuff is a little on the expensive side, but hey what can you expect from a small neighborhood store. They do have a good selection of items. I am glad to have a store close to my house. The guy's name is Kim. I called him Bob until my girlfriend had the cojones to ask him his name. It wasn't easy, I'm told. He is known for grumpiness, after all. Convenience stores should be cheaper than this. It has a myriad of random items for sale, however, including a respectable porn selection (mags and DVDS). My roommate bought some nylons there the other day. I'm usually buying beer and cigarettes. They charge forty five cents for running a credit card. They take food stamps at no charge. Kim/Bob likes to order his employees around. His English isn't great either. Sometimes his wife (sister? friend?) works behind the counter too. She's a little more cordial but can be pushy if you take too long with your PIN. I love this place. It's cheaper than the AMPM down the street. I have lived in the Brooklyn neighborhood for two years and have never once had a positive experience at Bob's Handy Pantry. The owner is rude and unfriendly. On one occasion, my son and I stopped by the store to grab a drink. My son is five, so make a choice can often be difficult. I was holding the door open to the refrigerated drinks so he could make a selection when the owner asked me to shut the door! Really? I'd suggest shopping somewhere else! read more

Listen, Bob's is not a 7-11 or any other corporate corner store. He has a limited selection of beer and has some older stock on the shelves. However... My sister in law went there looking for ice cream cones and they didn't have any. After asking she came back a week later and they had a box of ice cream cones behind the counter. Personal anecdotes aside Bob's doesn't deserve 2 1/2 stars. He is a product of his times, trying to service everyone he can with a limited shelf space and an off brand name. Why don't you all get off your high horses and when you find yourself drunk in the Brooklyn neighborhood, hit up Bob's for a soda or dusty box PF cereal, but be happy that you have a locally owned corner store that is trying to serve your needs the best they can!! read more

I have had nothing but great experiences here. The couple who owns and operates Bob's are helpful, cute, and loyal- It doesn't hurt that it's down the street from me in the Brooklyn neighborhood. It's definitely more than you'd pay for at the Plaid Pantry, but far far less than you'd pay at the Arco down the street. Help a local business out, and get to know them, it's worth it! read more

Good if you live in the neighborhood and don't want to walk too far, drive, or take the bus. You definitely can't get major groceries here, but if you need to quickly grab some eggs, milk, beer or wine, it will have you covered. The shelves are not stocked very full and you can't really count on them having what you need, but they might. I got light bulbs and a plunger here. I don't know where people are getting rude vibes off the owners. Both people I have encountered there are nice enough, smiling and saying hello when I walk in. I don't know if they are the owners or not, but they are very pleasant. Prices are probably higher than the regular grocery, but that's normal for a small locally owned convenience store. I don't have a car so I'll gladly pay slightly more for a gallon if milk if I don't have the bus fare to go to Safeway. read more

This place keeps up with the neighborhood! Stocking good beer, decent enough wine (MUCH better than the next closest place for booze - ARCO down the block on Powell), and even healthy food options like kombucha and milk alternatives. No, it's nothing fancy... it's a convenience store. But the owners are top notch people. Super sweet and smiling and always remembers a familiar face. Bonus that neighborhood vagrants are rarely seen hanging around and I've never had anyone out front try and bum change. read more

I love Bob's Han-dy Pantry. The blue and red do-rags arranged in a duel make me laugh each time I pass them on my way to grab a snack. Bob's is a magical Mom and Pop kind of place that carries obscure yuppie cravings like yerba mate or coconut water and doesn't overcharge just because there is no grocery store within a mile's walk in the Brooklyn neighborhood. The kid's cereal and random grocery items make a midnight rice crispy treat cooking party possible and ... the owners are really sweet people who will tell you awesome stories if you care to hear them. Any nearby convenience store where I can buy a mop when my bathroom has flooded and a bottle of Mad Dog to counter the stress of a bathroom-flooded morning is a very good business in my book. (Just kidding about drinking Mad Dog in the morning, but seriously, I don't know why so many people have gone through the trouble to give poor reviews to a small, local, family-owned business that doesn't overcharge people). read more

The only positive about this place is that you can get lotto tickets, booze, ice cream, cigarettes and weed pipes all in the same place. That being said, while the older couple seems to treat their customers in a halfway decent manner (sometimes), the younger guy that works at night (I'm guessing their son) is an ASSHOLE. He is rude, abrupt, and treated me so badly today that when I requested an extra bag to double bag the heavy items I had, he threw it at me. Mind you, this is the second day in a row I have been in their store spending $25+ on overpriced groceries. Every time I leave this place I'm in a bad mood because of how I was treated. I would ask the people of the Brooklyn neighborhood to boycott this place until there is a serious attitude adjustment and major overhaul in the behavior of the people that work here. read more

Oh, Bob's. I spend way too much money there since it's the corner store near my house, but I would go elsewhere if there was somewhere more convenient. I don't know the owner's name, but everyone calls him Bob (for obvious reasons, although the name is apparently left over from a previous owner). Bob is nothing short of mean. I have been spending money there for years now and he still will hardly say a word to me (and it's not just the language barrier) and will literally throw my money across the counter to me sometimes. About once a year, I go in and he actually says something like "have a good night" and I have to go home and tell my husband how nice Bob was since it's so unusual. I'm always friendly, say please and thank you, wish him well, etc. but he is still just rude. He seems to be exceptionally nice to some people, though, so maybe he just has something against me. Although, he does have a reputation as just being a grumpy, mean man so I doubt it. Besides that, it's a typical corner store with food being sold well past its expiration date and overpriced beer. read more

The owner (like everyone else says) is the most curmudgeonly, obnoxious, and rude man I have had the displeasure to be served by. That said it's prices aren't that bad, and if you live in the neighborhood you know go there even if you don't want to. Don't let him be rude to you though, he really doesn't learn from example. read more
