One of the problems with car ownership is sometimes you need to take it to someone for a new part, a repair or just a service.
There's a reputation within the car industry of ripping people off. Charging for services that weren't completed (how would you know?), parts you didn't need and a whole host of other dodgy practices.
Last time I was in a tyre shop (for a wheel alignment) the guy behind the counter was telling me the brand new tyres on my car were the wrong size, they were going to come apart at speed and i'd probably die in a horrible crash. Fortunately the manager standing next to him pulled him up on it. The tyres were perfectly fine.
I had done my research before I went in, I had a few tyres in mind and had an idea about prices.
Popping in on a Saturday morning, it was busy as you'd expect. I gave the details, what car and the tyre size and asked what they had available. There were a few options, including some buy 3 get 4 deals, including the tyre I had my eye on. The store manager who was serving me enthused that these were the best tyres available.
Okay, look. There are some real high end tyres out there, so let's assume he means for my particular vehicle and needs. The tyre itself was only announced a month ago, so it may be more hype than reality at the moment, but I guess i'll find out.
I was only after 2 tyres, so the 3 for 4 deals, while tempting, were out the window for me. And I'll admit, I was expecting someone to walk in from the workshop to tell me that my perfectly fine rear tyres were getting low and needed replacement. No, quite the opposite. Was told they're in great condition. \o/
Anyhow, prices were competitive, staff were friendly and helpful (squeezed me in because I had to be somewhere in the afternoon) and the new tyres were on quick smart.
Very likely i'll be back when the back two need replacing. read more
