You can go inside and order drinks off the menu (including draft beer), or you can go outside and order the bottles of beer that they have there. But you can't do both from inside, unless you're seated by the ledge and lean over. Another strange thing is that you have to tell the cashier what you want, pay, and then she'll tell the bartender. If you just tell the bartender he won't do anything but look at you funny. This system doesn't work very well because you'll see lines forming for the cashiers while the bartenders sit around waiting to make a drink. Is it that hard to pour a draft beer? You know someone else is going to order one. It gets packed and seems to attract the American frat boy type, though I don't know why. The music is good and loud and the crowd spills out onto the street, where you have to be careful because it attracts some shady characters. Expect to smell pot. It has a lot of character and is definitely unique, but bottom line, if every other place was closed I might come here. So would everyone else.

Found out about Wednesday night hip hop and house music at Fosfobox through Bem Brasil…read moreEntertainment on Facebook, so me and my friends decided to check it out. We discovered it was only a short 8 minute walk from our apartment rental (score!) Walk in and the top floor was quite small. A few people were dancing but mainly crowding the bar. (They were giving free drinks until midnight) After midnight, everyone was liquored up and ready to go! I danced with people from Norway, England, France, Israel and of course Brasil. I was surprised at how many people knew the words to some of the songs because some of the hip hop wasn't mainstream that the DJ was spinning. I was delightfully surprised to hear southern American rap music...made me feel like I was back home in Texas :) We didn't really utilize the bottom floor. That's where the house music was. It was much larger, with way more people and way cooler down there, so we'd go down there to cool off in between hip hop songs. haha They have a pretty decent drink menu but make sure when you order a drink upstairs you get a ticket from the window in the corner so you can hand it to the bartender. That was unusual to me, but no big deal. The DJ was good and I had a pretty epic first night in Rio with my girls thanks to Fosfobox. I'll go again next time I'm in Rio!

This place was recommended to me by a friend from Rio who said after you go, life will never be the…read moresame. I went with two girl friends and we had a BLAST! TIP: get yourself on the guest list through Facebook or your hostel.. otherwise it was 50R. My ONE complaint that made the beginning of the evening very frustrating is the process to get drinks. Because of the eco cups (no disposable cups- you pay a 5R deposit and you can return it for your money back or keep it as a souvenir)-- you go to one cashier to buy drink tickets, but also need to buy cups. It's a crowded place with unorganized lines, so that took forever. Also- if interested in say vodka Redbull, they are separate tickets and purchases. THEN you take your tickets and your cup tô the bar in another location to get your drinks. Seems it would be MUCH more efficient to purchase cups and drink tickets when you buy your entrance and then if you need refills on drink tickets inside, you can purchase. The drinks were yummy, though not super strong. The caipirinha was delicious and sweet, and the Bahama Mama was great! The crowd was full of beautiful people from all around the world- very international. The sound system was OUT OF THIS WORLD! We went on a Wed which is Native Beats- hip-hop, Top40, Latin, reggaeton and Brazilian funk to finish off the night at 4:30a! The bass is so big it'll make your hair vibrate. Bathrooms are unisex which I found interesting. Definitely have more space downstairs, but it gets packed, hot and sweaty. Overall- what a great way to celebrate our last night out in Rio! Would definitely recommend

I'm not going to extend much about the place because the other Reviews are very faithful and detailed. The band was outstanding and "Bob's chair" was a nice touch next to the stage! (the chair of the owner!). The place is very touristy-like (I can clearly picture foreign people loving it - if one knows, picture the Jazz scene of Chicago... but happening in the top of a slum, with a kickass view) One thing, I'm not sure if this is usual, but on the day I went, the bar only opened 10pm. What we did, and that I truly advice you to do also, was to sit in a cheap bar right next to where the van that brings you up stops, drink some beers and eat some pizza. (they also have some cheap Yakissoba). The one liter beer was 7 reais (about 3 dolars)! You can save a lot of money by going to this bar before entering the Maze! Finally, at first I thought kinda expensive (40 reais for the entrance), but the awesome music make it worth.... also, make sure you explore the upper part of the Maze, there is a great view and a lot of people hang out there. I'm definitely going back there next month! Ps: they started accepting cards!

The Maze is perfect for those in Rio interested in good music, interesting people and fair prices…read more(there is a way called "lista amiga" for you to get a good discount in the entrance fee - around 40 reais without this discount). It is located in the top of a slum (favela) in Rio's south zone called Tavares Bastos. Despite some people could think it is too cliche a jazz bar on the top of a slum where middle class guys usually go to have fun while local people stay away, it is not that simple in this case. The bar is a very important source of money for the locals (and for the owner, obviously). The Maze is a kind of business that is helping to integrate slums with the rest of the city. This is a matter of putting the walls and prejuice separating slums and the city down. The view from the bar is amazing, undescridible. You gotta go there and see by yourselves. Highly recommended!!
