No other shops in town would touch something so old so James to the rescue. He was willing to try old fashioned fixes rather than just throwing parts at the car which I always appreciate. In the end his prices were fairly reasonable considering it's alaska, and he got my jeep back on the road! Only downmarks at all if you can call it that is sometimes communication can be a bit slow. But know I can be an over communicator so I'll share some blame there. Overall would recommend!

Of course we didn't want him to be stuck with it so we planned to just buy it from him to keep for spares. We were in a crunch to get the survey done before winter fully closed in, and logistics were definitely against us. Jim was extremely communicative and quick to respond throughout the process. He worked with me to get the multi-day survey set up (the out-of-water portion required moving the boat to a travel lift about 50 miles from its Auke Bay berth, so logistics were complex), and he was very good walking me through the ins and outs of what to expect, as well as patient with questions about process and his vast boat and general maritime knowledge. Well, I got to Alaska and weather wasn't exactly playing ball. The day we were supposed to do the in-the-water turned out to be our last window to get the boat moved for a safe haul out. The plan had been for Jim's partner Todd to fly into Hoonah for the haul out by sea plane, but facing the weather crunch Jim and Todd made accommodations for a last-minute change of plan. Todd volunteered to travel to Hoonah with me and the seller on the boat, spend the night aboard, and do the haul out in the morning before we all rode back. It was so cool getting to know Todd while he went about the exhaustive work of surveying a large boat underway, and then meticulously examining the hull after we hauled. I felt completely confident in his skills and deep knowledge, and like Jim he's just a great guy to chat about boats and life with. The survey went off without a hitch, and follow up by Sepel was excellent. A few days after the trip I got a call from Jim to go over the full report, which he and Todd had completed on time and in exacting detail. The findings were fair, practical, and clear-eyed. It's huge peace of mind to know exactly what I'm buying and to understand how to make the boat as safe as it possibly can be. What else can I say? Complete pros who are a pleasure to deal with, patient with customers, and happy to share their knowledge. Quality work on a tight deadline. Hire them!
