I would never recommend Stratos Partners (Sewickley, PA) or founder/owner, Harry Butson…read more After the stock market crash of 2008, I suffered substantial losses and had nobody to turn to for advice. I asked a SCORE counselor in Los Angeles for a recommended financial advisor, and he connected me with Harry, a friend. Harry flew from Sewickley to Los Angeles to meet with me. He immediately put the bulk of my money in various annuities which, I later learned, were expensive for me, low earners for me, and hugely lucrative for him. Annuities also relieved him from having to do most of the work planning and growing my financial portfolio. I was an easy mark. Besides being alone, I'm bad with numbers and find the financial market largely incomprehensible. During the seven years I was with Stratos, my net worth slowly withered to the point where the principle was about to be consumed. My CPA finally brought this to my attention, not Harry. Never Harry. I then interviewed other financial planners, and absolutely nobody agreed with the management of my portfolio. In more diplomatic language than I'm using here, they felt him to be unscrupulous, unethical, lazy. If Harry were here right now, he'd say this is what I wanted ... a sure, safe income stream above all. But no, actually I wanted to earn back the money I lost in the 2008 crash albeit in an adequately conservative way. I also wanted to grow my portfolio to support my charities after my death. He'd probably say it way my fault; I was spending too much. Equally untrue. I've always lived a comfortable but frugal life, and that has never changed. When he realized I was interviewing other financial planners and the jig was up, he still believed he could save his meal ticket, this cash cow. He actually did some work, and sent me a revamped market analysis with recommendations that looked a lot like those of my new interviewees. Even if you are more financially savvy than I, and are surely a better watchdog, is your trust worth the Stratos risk?
