If you don't like vintage and retro clothing, don't even bother reading this review. I say this because I am tired of people who won't even consider browsing through fine shops like Blue Rinse simply because some of the clothes look old and somewhat moth-eaten. Because Blue Rinse strives to provide real retro clothing (and by 'real' I mean actually designed and made in the 1980s, rather than designed in the 2000s with vague 1980s stylings), the majority of its clothes are second-hand, meaning that some are indeed frayed, stained and holey. There are also some ridiculous items that you can't even envisage MC Hammer wearing in his prime. But, if you go in often enough (once, twice a month is a good amount) and take time to rummage through the crap, you will usually find an absolute treasure for a pretty small price. I have left there in recent months proudly clutching pristine vintage adidas and Puma track-tops, original Lyle and Scott sweats, and cheap vintage pumps. If you've got the time and stamina to search for a unique hidden gem which will become your favourite item of clothing, I thoroughly recommend Blue Rinse as the best vintage store in town. If not...have fun in Topman.

When I was a Fresher, which is more years ago than I care to remember, I bought a knee-length, camel coloured leather coat here for £10. It saw me through three years' worth of Leeds winters before I lost it in a club; when I returned here to try and buy a new one, similar coats were selling for upwards of £50. That just about sums up what's happened to Blue Rinse in recent years. It's still a good place to come if you see 'vintage' as a statement and labels matter, but if like me you just want cheap and interesting clothes that are different to what's on offer in the high street you're better off in Vintage or Best Vintage. The prices here are a lot higher than in any of those two outlets, and the stock leans heavily towards sportswear (fine if you're an indie boy, not much good for anyone else), but the real problem here is the attitude of the staff. On every occasion I've visited I've felt pressured to leave before I've had a proper look due to the uncomfortable feeling that every aspect of my appearance is being assessed and found lacking. So if you don't see a shopping trip as a catwalk and instead choose to wear comfortable, practical clothes be prepared to have people look down their nose at you. Blue Rinse will always be popular, regardless of what I or anyone else say, and people will continue to pay over the odds for OK goods and shoddy service. But as far as I'm concerned, I'll take my business to where my choice of footwear isn't more important than the money in my pocket.

A metal staircase leads you down to the basement which is Adidas land. If only to gaze in morbid fascination at the freak of branding that is the Adidas leather couch complete with buttons! Any Adidas lover will be at home here, surrounded by classic tracksuits and exclusive collections. Upon ascending the stairs you see that each step denotes a key moment in the history of Adidas, elevating the importance of the basement store to something of a museum exhibit. Up to the second floor (this shop really is huge!) and you find the more general clothing with a variety of brands including fread Perry and Lyle & Scott. The gear is pricey but a little more varied and interesting than the usual suspects in the Adidas dungeon. There are loads of lavishly branded t-shirts, expensive jeans and some vintage-look cardigans and checked shirts...but I can't help but feel you'd be better off buying true vintage for a quarter of the price rather than paying through your nose just for the addition of a tiny embroidered logo. If you like labels of a certain ilk and don't mind paying a hefty chunk to do a bit of free advertising for your favourite brand then you'll probably love Size? If you're not into labels and are shopping on a budget then even the friendly and enthusiastic staff probably wouldn't get you over the threshold!

If its high tops or retro cool, basketball kicks or skater shoes that take your fancy, then definitely take a trip to Size if you fancy something different. One of the pleasant rarities with Size? The staff actually know what they're on about, there's a passion for the collections, and if you ask, there's usually an answer. That's without mentioning the content, the collections are unique, which is probably evident in the price tag; your average pair of Converse are going to cost you more at Size, but they're more than likely different, or limited edition, and for any sneakerhead, it's a bonus worth the price tag. And that was just the first floor. If the giant Converse boot on the ground floor doesn't tickle you (it still amuses me to this day) then there's the basement, dedicated to the uber-cool Adidas Originals brand. Everything is organised by colour palette and is typical of the Originals brand, again it's a bit pricey, but if you're a fan of the brand it's totally worth it to pick up something fairly unique. Once you've hit Adidas, jump in the lift, take the two floors up and get off at the equally uber-cool clothing department. Again there is staff on hand to provide informed answers to questions, and that's not forgetting the chance to browse the familiar brands with a different twist to them. If you like the idea of your Nike and your Lyle & Scott, or your Adidas and your Stussy all under one well informed, friendly and varied roof, check out Size on Vicar Lane, Leeds.

The Mr took them back to that store and had a real carry on trying to get a refund as they couldn't change for the same size. (I'm not about to type up his rant as it already nearly made my ears bleed!) I went into the Crown Point store today and i think it must be a Employee requirement to have qualifications in pure ignorance! When I eventually found and assistant (as the staff stood around doing nothing behind the counter can't possibly venture outside of the till point to help you!!), he was a bit slow in actually picking up the train of thought that I wanted to check for 3 different trainers in the same size- I wouldn't think this complicated however he started to walk off (I hoped to get what I'd asked for) but then came back and said 'sorry, I can only check for 2. Erm- I'm asking about 3 pairs, but what you're telling me is that you will got check for 2 pairs and then come back, give me them and then go for the other pair- absolutely absurd! Not only did he then head off to get the 2 he'd 'allowed' he brought me a 4 & 5 in one pair and nothing of the other. I abandoned my quest and went to stand in line to pay for the walking boot replacement. The queue for the amount of staff available was nonsense! They are the slowest till merchants I've ever seen! You are asked at the till if you want to 'buy' a horrific 'carrier' bag as they don't carry the stock of bags in to accommodate the 'shoe box size'- strange, I though as a sport shop selling sport shoes they would have the correct bags at least. Must be such a daft request!!!! Anyway, I thought I was saving myself some money going in here but all I have managed to do is increased my blood pressure and wind myself up. Avoid at all costs, cheap prices at the sacrifice of your sanity and even an acceptable level of customer service!!!!!!!

The thing that makes this one distinctive for me, is I could tell that the owners are very selective when buying stock. In many vintage shops, it seems evident that a large order has been delivered from wholesalers, and it doesn't always seem completely genuine. There is an old-fashioned, celebratory feel on entering the family run local business. With bunting and fairy lights decorating the place, and an iconic washing line hanging from the ceiling displaying 50's style lingerie, it feels special. I can't speak highly enough of the pieces on sale. The faux fur coats and numerous jackets are absolutely stunning. I tried on a classic pilots waistcoat and jacket. Complete with gold buttons and a stripe on the cuffs, it was beautifully tailored to fit a women. Collections of tea dresses and evening gowns from the 1930's to the 1980's adorn the interior. There is an interesting shoe section of the shop, with some truly unique pairs on show. Upstairs, there are further delights in store. It is a burlesque pin-up boutique; filled with a wide range of corsets, gloves, burlesque accessories and pin-up style lingerie. Dita Von Teese would be in her element. The woman running the shop was absolutely lovely, she was patient and attentive whilst I dithered over what to try on. There is a men's section of the shop and they also sell goods online. Although Upstaged Vintage is not in an obvious location, the treasure you uncover when discovering it, is reward in itself.

No, not me, and so imagine my surprise to nip in the other day and discover it?! According to the guys in there people often say that they had no idea that it existed, which is really quite shameful, since it has been here for over a year! Imagine that. And all the delights that I have missed. The ground level shop space has two changing rooms, which you will need, and all the glorious vintage items that you could possibly wish for. There are beautiful eighties puffed sleeved dresses, glorious gorgeous full length coats - one in particular which was absolutely divine but sadly a size wrong for me. They also have some beautiful classy hats, gloves, scarves, shirts - you name it. It's hard to actually describe the amount of beauty within, you really must go and see it for yourself. The people in there are lovely, friendly and vintage fans themselves so you won't be short on advice either! Prices are ranging, but considering they are selling high end clothing for a fraction of the original price I would call it bargainous - investment pieces. The upstairs section also deserves a special mention in its own right. Set out as a burlesque boutique it has a number of beautiful items especially collected for ladies who perform burlesque acts. There are fitted corsets galore, of the finest quality, in a range of sizes. I couldn't sing louder about such a cool and exciting place to shop. It's beyond fancy dress in every sense of the word 'fancy', it is divine! You absolutely must visit, if only for a browse.
