One company said they couldn't even do an estimate until the end of June. Another came out and said I needed a new roof. Rooftop is well known and well respected in Charlottesville and they said they would send someone out the next day. If it was in fact a small job, they would just complete it. If major, they'd give me an estimate. True to their word, two workers appeared the next day and were quickly up on the roof. I heard hammering in an area other than the one I knew about. They told me there was another small area that was missing and the workers quickly repaired both and were gone. Price was very fair and I would use them again without question.

My house in Albemarle County needed a new roof so I solicited bids from three contractors. Gary @…read moreVanguard Roofing was by far the quickest to come visit my house to see my needs. During the visit I particularly enjoyed Gary's in-depth evaluation of my current roof and how he would avoid some of the pitfalls in its installation if he were to replace it. Unfortunately, the other contractors took up to a month for their visit, which delayed my decision. Eventually, I chose Vanguard in no small part due to my experience with Gary. While he had left me some shingle samples after his initial visit, I chose to visit Vanguard's office in Madison to see more samples and discuss options with him. Originally, I had considered a shingle roof though I ultimately chose a metal one because of its appearance and durability. I also requested new skylights, gutters, and gutter guards. Gary warned me that while my roof could be replaced with a shingle one in a couple of days, replacing it with a metal roof one might take up to a couple of weeks. I was concerned that an intervening rainstorm might result in water leaking into my house after the shingles were removed but before their metal replacement was in place. Gary assured me that the water barrier that he'd install immediately after removing the shingles would prevent that. That assurance was severely tested as there were several significant rain and snow storms during the installation period. But there were no leaks. Ultimately, it took about five weeks for the installation due mainly to the snow storms that halted installation while we waited for the snow and ice to clear. Finally, the installation was complete and the roof looked great! The gutters looked pretty good too though I didn't like how the new black gutters interfaced near ground level with the white tops of my existing, mostly buried drainage system. I pointed this out to Gary during his final post-installation inspection and he responded that he wanted me to be happy and would make it right. A day later, one of his people returned and extended the black gutters completely into the ground, interfacing with my existing system below ground level and out of sight. Now the gutters looked great too! As nature would have it, the following spring we had a significant storm that dumped 1/2" hail on the roof. (We rarely get such storms.) Other than a lot of noise there was no damage to the roof and it continues to look great. There is no "oil-canning" anywhere on the roof that you sometimes see on other metal roofs. So count me as a very satisfied customer.

They took pride in their work, cleaned up after with a big magnet thing to take up the nails and used a blower at the very end. They had one guy on the ground the entire time picking up trash etc. We also had three skylights replaced and they were mindful of the inside of my house and helped me place my drop clothes. We have had a lot of issues with our roof over the past 7 years when we got a brand new roof (shingle over shingle) and a few things I have learned: 1. ONLY go with a roofing company, not a business that does roofs, additions etc 2. Ask who will be working on your home and how long they have been working for the company. The guys at Lounsbury roofing have been working for the company for at least 10 years. We had other general contractors come over and they had young kids put our shingles on they they did it incorrectly and we got leaks. 3. Never put shingles on top of shingles but rather always tear off all your shingles so you can see if their is any damage to the plywood. 4. Walt and his team were attentive, thorough, and went above and beyond to make sure the job was well done and that we were satisfied. Naturally, as we prepare to sell our house we wanted the same level of detail, so we called and scheduled with them again. I'm not sure within the last three years if this team was abducted by aliens and replaced by their evil doppelgangers, or if they just don't care anymore, but this experience was the polar opposite. The day prior to our appointment we received an email that gave some basic instructions, but what was striking was a paragraph that said "Please do not call us on the day of your job asking for a specific time. You will not be given one. Due to the nature of our work we cannot give out specific or estimated timing on the day of your scheduled job. You will receive an "on-the-way" text if you've provided a cell phone number." OK. That's a little off putting, but we get it. Some jobs are bigger than others, but even the cable guy gives you a range. Day of the appointment arrives and two hours are spent clearing the decks and porches. And the waiting begins..... Finally at 3:00pm a text is sent to the company to get an idea of the latest time they will arrive. At this time the office manager says, "Oh, he's been there and left". What? What happened to the on the way text? There was no knock on the door and no phone calls. Effectively the receptionist told us that there is a car blocking the driveway and he couldn't get his truck in to turn it around. No, we say. There is no car blocking the driveway, plenty of room. Actually, says the OM, you have a difficult driveway to get up and Walt (company owner) remembered this and didn't have the right equipment to get up your driveway. It's in the shop in Harrisonburg, so he's not going to be there today (we have a bit of a hill to get up). Wait we say, which is it? A car blocking the driveway or lack of equipment? At this point we are told the house phone was called and a message was left telling us this information. That's a tough sell, as the land line has been disconnected for about 5 months. After much back and forth we basically tell said receptionist that this is extremely poor business decisions and terrible customer service as we have all of our porch furniture sitting in the yard, and are planning on staining the decks tomorrow. Not my problem was the message from good ol Busy B. We asked to have the owner call us. We were told that he doesn't have signal. Maybe he'll call, maybe he won't. At this point we are at a loss. It looks like the B is too busy to come do the job they committed to. So we begin to look for other options. Suddenly, at 4:00 pm, a white pickup pulls into the driveway with no special equipment and somehow navigates the 'obstacle course' of the driveway blocking car. The owner himself gets out of the pickup. He made no apology. When asked why he didn't bother to call or knock to let us know he had made an attempt. He then tells us that he had both knees replaced a few months ago and didn't want to walk up the driveway. He also tells us that getting our house power washed is 'not a crisis', and that him living with cancer over the past two years is. What? No one called it a crisis, just really poor customer service and crappy attitudes when asked why no one had showed up or called. I'm very sorry for your medical conditions, but that's not my concern. If it's that bad, maybe you should have sent someone else. Finally the power washing begins. No real apology for the lack of communication or the decision not to show up. During the washing session, there were some texts back and forth to our oh so happy OM who said that a check would be needed at the end of the session. We said we would pay electronically just like the last time. 6:30 rolls around and we go outside to look at the job. First thing noted was that the walks and back patio were not done. An argument ensues that those have never been done and that was not on the work order. On the contrary we say, they were done last time and we specifically stated that we did not want the deck surfaces washed (which they did). On the previous you talked about how we needed to fill sand back in the walks after the session. After more arguing back and forth, out he goes to finish the job we hired him for. Bottom line is this. The entire experience from top to bottom was terrible. Communication was terrible, service was terrible, attitudes were terrible, integrity was terrible, and the job was marginal. It's unfortunate that this occurred. We would not recommend services from this company at all. Both the office staff as well as the owner were argumentative, and it appeared clear he did not want to do this job.

The service call fee was $165 and Wooden Sun advised me that second service call to bring parts they didn't have with them would be an additional $165 service call fee. The afternoon of their service call both fireplaces stopped working and would not ignite after repeated attempts. I called Tiger Fuel after Wooden Sun would not return to correct their failure to perform and service for my two fireplaces. Tiger fuel replaced pilot light assemblies in both fireplaces for under $200 each, and the fireplaces have ignited consistently since without issue. I would not recommend Wooden Sun as a service repair for gas fireplaces.
