They have however won awards and show certificates etc and source their fish from sustainable stocks. As for the actual F&C's they are spot on, a little more expensive than others though only by pennies it's well worth the extra as the Fish actually tastes like fish where so often these days it doesn't. Well worth a Saturday lunch !

Surprisingly, given the amount of takeaways on this street, this is the only fish and chip shop (unless you count Tracy's Plaice way down the other end) on the main road. Because of this, and the fact that it was jammed full of locals and students when I went in, I assumed it would be something special. Unfortunately, perhaps due to the Friday night rush of business, I was left slightly disappointed - I ordered just chips and scraps, and was served rather slowly for such a simple order. When I eventually got it, the food was edible but by nothing to write home about...perhaps my expectations were just too high.

The fish is put in the fryer as soon as you order it instead of getting 1 thats been keeping warm for however long the only down side is that they dont leave the skin on the fish but it still tastes good even without it. I would highly recomend this chip shop and i go here quite often on my lunch break as its only down the road.

Another treasure for Bishopthorpe Rd., which is starting to get quite the collection!…read more What helps set this place apart from your average fish and chips place is the dining area in the back... while not large, it's charming and cheap as, well... chips, so it's a great place to pop in if you're looking for a quick meal in the area without breaking the bank. They even do a perfectly portioned, i.e. not tiny, 300 calorie option that is more than enough for me... especially if I've squeezed in a starter! Aside from the usual suspects they have some wonderful calamari, not to be missed if they have them when you're in, and a dessert counter with some goodies. In the end this is a fish and chips place though, so be in the mood for that if your'e popping in. On that front, I won't say they're the best I've ever had sadly, so I wouldn't drive through the city to get them, but they are very good and I've happily been here quite a few times. Ther service in the back is always friendly, but you may have to be a bit patient... given the relatively small size of the place there's not alway a server in there with you, but it's never really caused a problem... just something to be aware of. They also serve beer and cider in the back when you dine in, and I imagine a wine of some variety as well. The front is a standard fish and chip shop, but still a cut above in the theme and cleanliness so it's also worth stopping by for that if you're in the mood and it's en-route to you destination.

Being a foodie from New York City, I was sure to try certain things while visiting a friend in…read more(old) York. Fish and chips was, of course, one of them. My friend said we should get fish and chips from The Fisherman's Wife for good, down-home, classic deliciousness. I'm so glad she did! Of course, we ate it New York City style and ordered them to our door. Which apparently folks out there don't do and my friend was embarrassed to know me but whatevs--people order delivery for everything in NYC from prescriptions to milk to laundry. And it was raining, so being in pajamas made the experience all the more fantastic. We got both the cod and the halibut. I preferred the halibut and my friend preferred the cod, so it worked out perfectly. The fries were interesting--a bit soggy for my taste but I suppose that's par for the course for this dish. If you're looking for a place to grab fish and chips (or if you're fat and lazy like I am and want them delivered to your door to the dismay of your local friend who ended up loving it because let's get real--who doesn't like delivery?), I highly recommend this place.

Oldfield Lane Fisheries is very much a traditional chippie, it doesn't try to do a vast array of take away foods as more and more chippies seem to be doing but instead sticks largely to doing fish and chips and doing them well. I gained intense pleasure from my food (and I don't do pleasure very often these days). My only beef (can I say that when reviewing a piscine business?) was the size of the fish which was slightly smaller than I am accustomed to but I have to say it was perfectly cooked and this anti-batter person found himself enjoying each crisp, flavoursome nibble. (I was going to go 3.5 stars because of the size issue but I just loved that flavour so much)

The shop front entices you in with its cheeky appearance and what I think is a brilliant name for a fish restaurant, and on my visit the takeaway was packed (it was around 5PM so that made sense), however service was quicker than I expected it to be. What struck me about the cod & chips I got was the utter lack of grease, which made a refreshing change as I didn't have to wipe my lips after every bite and I also felt slightly less guilty about eating deep-fried goods. They tasted splendid to be honest, and the prices were so reasonable that I'm thinking of going back and checking out the restaurant. It's won awards, and I can see why.
