And the MoCa Bar is a nice pub indeed: It offers quite a healthy selection of hand-pumped real ales from many different small breweries (rotating), and it's centrally located. I love Thornbridge beers and with Manchester being fairly close to Buxton we really are lucky to get a lot of their varied beers in loads of different pubs around the area. Having attended their meet the brewer recently at Volta in Didsbury I was determined to go on the brewery tour while I was holidaying in nearby Tideswell. As they only do the brewery tour on a Weds it was by luck rather than judgement that I could make this and hopefully they'll start doing the tour at weekends in future so my pals can enjoy it too! The tour has limited places and is always busy so I called up a month in advance to book (it's £7.50 but you do get to pay on the day) and when we arrived on the industrial estate 10 mins walk from Buxton town centre we were greeted with a half of our choice of 4 Thornbridge beers they had on while perusing their pretty awesome shop selling a fantastic range of beers, merchandise and random awesome beer related goodies (I bought some fantastic Thornbridge / Sierra Nevada collaborations) We were taken on the tour by James (who actually did their meet the brewer a few weeks earlier) and he was knowledgable, funny and on the money with the crowd he had. A 40 mins tour of the brewery from 3.15pm had us shown around their state of the art facility, labs, bottling and kegging plant while also being able to breathe in deeply in their huge hops supply (amazing) - and then we were shown their secret project warehouse which was fully of rioja and sherry barrels which are going to be used for some very special (Brewdog Abstrakt style) beers coming your way soon! Once getting back into the main bar and reception we were then pretty much given free reign to drink as much free beer as we wanted (I'm sure there's a limit but we hadn't reached it...) before they lock the doors at 5pm! Put it this way we enjoyed some damn fine Jaipur (the best I've ever had), Raven, Tzara and a special edition called Desert Sessions. A bloody good 2 hours and I'd definitely do it again if I'm down this way again!

If, however, you are looking for a pub that serves VERY local beer (as in the beer is brewed upstairsin the pub), dangerous home-made ginger-ale, pizza on a Friday and darts on a Thursday, has excellent staff and management and friendly locals (and friendly animals hi Oscar the lab, Thomas the half-Bengal cat and Sam the British Shorthair) this really is the place for you. The Chequers is a small-ish truly local, yet welcoming pub. The beer is brewed in house (with one guest ale) and beautifully kept. This is an old fashioned pub. The decor is lovely and recently refurbished, but fear not it's not fru-fru nor trendy. It is a pub and a local one at that. As I mentioned, in addition to the real ale, there is also a small wine list, the usual small selection of spirits and I'd imagine (I didn't check) the usual lagers on offer. This is not a foodie pub you can get pizza on Fridays (home-made, apparently I've not sampled it) and paninis on a Sunday. And that's pretty much it, besides crisps and the like on the food front. This suits me many of the pubs in the area(ish) have totally turned into restaurants that have cute names and a couple of ales on offer. This is a local pub that instead occasionally has a bit of food on offer and that's the way it should be. Sadly, the pub is only open Thursday Sunday. I would love to know how the landlord keeps his cask ale fresh given those hours, but I suppose as he brews it in house it's not too difficult. Another downside is there is no garden if you're a smoker you're pretty much reduced to standing in the car park. Besides the beer, there are two friendly cats and one exceptionally friendly dog. Dogs are welcome in the pub though there is a sign asking you to keep them on leads I don't know if this is enforced, especially as there is also a sign asking you to keep children on leads. This is truly an excellent pub which deserves far more custom (and reviews). I would be sad I don't live in the area, except for the fact a sneaky weekday pint is not possible. I do hope it goes from strength to strength.

It's cheap for packs of lager too in 24packs ect, thats why its great for parties because you can just stop off and stick up on the way. They have a really good range too especially of spirits so you can always find what your looking for, they will ask for id so if you look longer but are old enough to buy alcohol then i would take id with you so you won't be refused a sale. Customer service isn't much in the shop but your never there long anyway only passing through.

I thought she was a resident who had escaped from a care home. Working in care with the elderly myself, I went over to her and ask if she's ok. She quickly gripped onto my arm, started charging me up the road, rammed a tenner into my hand, led me to bargain booze and demanded I buy her some vodka. So I did. And somehow I ended up back at her house which had no carpet, just a sea of letters and bills and newspapers and general crap. Anyway, I didn't get ID'd and the vodka was cheap. The end.

Quite a small shop and therfore it is quite nerve wrecking walking around it for fear of knocking over a bottle or two! It is without doubt jammed packed with lots of variety of beer, wine and spirits. I would be surprised if they didn't have what you wanted. They also sell your daily newspapers and cigarettes and also have a cold fridge with selected beverages in just in case you don't have time to cool your drinks down before wanting to drink them. They do offer some good prices on things and also have good deals on throughout the year.
