The hostess was very nice. We had reservations for hibachi. We had to wait a while, because there were only two chefs to do hibachi for that night. Which didn't matter to us. We weren't in a rush, and the wine was flowing. However, you could definitely tell there was a difference between the two chefs. Our chef did not seem to be feeling well, but the other chef was very entertaining. Our chef was even holding back a few coughs. With Covid and the flu going around, I was very nervous. Luckily everyone is feeling ok so far today. The food itself was OK. If I lived here, I don't think I would go back again. read more

Great service great food The guy that did our habachi was super friendly and made this a fun experience. We got sushi and an order of the sesame chicken. Really good fresh sushi, and some of the best yellowtail I've ever had. The restaurant is really cute and nicely decorated, and all the staff was helpful and welcoming. The restaurant itself is decorated so beautifully and smelled so good when you first walk in. We sat at the hibachi area. We ordered the ninja roll and the spicy shaggy dog roll as appetizers. The rolls looked good when they came out but did not taste good. The rice was extremely sticky and did not taste fresh. I ordered the hibachi shrimp entree. Everything tasted good except the rice. It ws one of those moments where fate stepped in and gave us a wonderful gift...Blue Fugu! We had wanted to see the sunset because we saw from Tampa how beautiful it was the night before, but we also had planned on having teppanyaki up in Wesley Chapel for dinner...too far apart to accomplish both, so I went to Yelp and did a search. THANK YOU YELPERS! The meals were a range of scallops and filet (me) & chicken and steak (everyone else!). Like most teppanyaki restaurants, they started with traditional miso soup and ginger salad and both were very well executed. We passed on sushi since we had a sushi meal the day before, but we will be back to try their sushi bar next time - it looked delicious! On to vegetables and fried rice and the vegetables here are zucchini and onions, which our chef chopped in larger bite sized pieces which I appreciated because I use chopsticks and those little pieces are a bear!! As for my filet, I DID ask for extra rare and the ret of the steak eaters asked for a range of medium rare to medium. That said, our chef left mine on while he served the others and I was a bit disappointed by that. I liked him, he was a hoot, but he didn't listen to that and it was the only thing that held back a 5 star rating. I didn't say anything because it would've rocked the boat and held up 8 other people because he would've had to get another steak and then cook it and that would've set off my guilt thermometer too high...so, I dealt with almost well done steak. eww. One of my favorite things about the steaks? The mushrooms! There used to be a fantastic restaurant that I worked at as a bus girl when I was in high school and the chef made these amazing mushrooms with steaks and these took me back 40 years...I could've cried with happiness! So, overall, our dining experience was fun and happy and we laughed alot with the chef who thought my daughter was as adorable as I think she is, so I liked him! The service was very attentive and even when we walked through the sushi bar to the ladies room the sushi chefs spoke to us and a server helped guide us. The only odd thing was trying to FIND the restaurant - it is tucked in the VERY BACK of a U-shaped strip center next to a Public and across from the public access to St. Pete Beach - hence, the comeback to the sunset! Best dinner!! A little pricey but worth the splurge. Great frozen drink options too. They offer both hibachi and sushi rolls. We went with sashimi for appetizer, then ordered the land and sea for dinner. It came with shrimp, scallops and filet mignon. We have been going to Blue Fugu for well over a decade, before we even moved to St Pete. It has always been amazing, but after quarantining for over two months, we decided they were going to be our first family dinner out to celebrate the end of the school year and they did not disappoint. We ate at the hibachi tables. As a party of four, we had our own table. If you were in a party of two or three, they sat you at opposite ends of the same table. Plenty of distancing and the staff wore masks. I felt completely comfortable. On to the food...it was great, as usual. All the normal stuff you find at a hibachi, plus a few shrimp "appetizer" and noodles included. Steak was cooked a perfect medium rare as requested. Blue Fugu is tucked waaaay back in the Publix strip mall plaza on the right (south) side where the place converts to two stories; they're on the second floor. There's absolutely no way you'd know they're back there from the street so I'm honestly not sure how they stay in business considering St Pete Beach is mostly tourists. In any case, I'm a local and my wife and I eat here regularly and enjoy it. There are only two Japanese steakhouses in close proximity to the beach and this is the better of the two. Anything else is going to be a 20+ minute drive. That's not to say there's a reason to drive further away as Blue Fugu is actually quite good; we've had consistently good service, good entertainment from the chefs and high food quality. The only slight negative is the pricing is marginally on the high side; i.e. tourists are a captive audience so lets exploit that. The prices aren't high enough that we avoid going though, they're not as bad as Benihana or Kobe (chain steakhouses) by any means, but they're certainly higher than you'd expect from a non-chain local restaurant. They have a full liquor bar, so no worries about not being able to have a cocktail with your meal. Prices are average. They also have the typical selection of Japanese beers, Sapporo, Kirin, etc. There is a sushi bar if you prefer to sit at the bar rather than at a table, and for those not interested in hibachi, there are also many regular tables. I often get the tuna hibachi and have never had what tasted like a bad cut or something that had been sitting around a bit too long, so no concerns there. read more

This is a very nice restaurant tucked into the back of a shopping plaza which is currently under construction. We never would have tried it without a strong recommendation. They offer teppanyaki and sushi. We were there for the sushi so we're seated on that side which inexplicably has tables designed for hotpot which is not on the menu. We were given the "sushi" list plus a paper menu which had appetizers and the pre chosen sushi assortments. The sushi we got was fresh and delicious. I only wish the selection of rolls containing raw fish was longer. Almost all of their specialty rolls contained batter fried something inside. When I ordered what I thought were raw sushi rolls, we received the sliced raw fish on top of the rice balls. It was great, but not what I had intended to order. We kept it and ate it since I assume half the responsibility for not specifying we wanted sushi rolls. All in all the sushi was great, just be very clear with the wait staff what you want if ordering sushi. read more

We went for dinner, ordered drinks, sushi, and hibachi dinners. There were 8 in our party, we had reservations at 5:30. We arrived at 5:23 and were seated right away. That's where the good ended. With only 2 chefs we sat and waited an hour with empty cups, and no explanation why we were waiting so long that's when we found out there were 2 chefs. White rice we ordered sat in front of us 45 minutes before the chef came. Then they came to cook, the chef was nice but unfortunately the food was not good. Shrimp and salmon over cooked. Steak over cooked. Chicken tasted rotten. Fried five had no flavor. Veggies were flavorless. It was overall a terrible experience. We finished with 3 of the 8 with empty glasses. One was sleeping. But they still made out with gratuity they did not deserve. We were so disappointed that I had to write this to warn people it was a lot of money and now we're talking about ordering pizza. read more

On the hunt for some decent food, we drove around St Pete's beach. In a strip mall that bragged Dollar Tree and tired looking signs, the only decorative sign that stood out was a blue colored one - 'Blue Fu Gu'. A quick search on Yelp revealed 4 star ratings, and so I went in. The restaurant is divided into 2 sections - one for sushi and the other for hibachi. The decision was made - after all who can resist fireworks and knife tricks over dinner? Drinks orders were collected rather slowly but the pace picked up when the hibachi chef arrived, and told us this was his first attempt. The traditional sizzle of the grill, onion volcanoes and egg smashing took place with a little drumming of the steel spatula. Our appetites were suitably wetted as every meal comes with a salad and soup appetizer. Next came the actual hibachi portions which are enormous - whether you order the $30 filet mignon and scallops, or the vegetarian hibachi, either option could easily feed 2 people (given that each hibachi also includes sides of shrimp, extra veggies and lo mein). Whilst the shrimp is delicious and takes up the flavor of the grill, the veggies etc. are meh... As the chef wheeled away his sauce-laden cart, I wondered why hibachi restaurants always confine themselves to the predictable mushrooms, broccoli and snap peas. read more
