We always order our Thanksgiving turkey in October and pick up some great Christmas items every year. This store is worth the drive and we always look forward to going!!!

The owner, Fred (Alfred) is a friendly swiss man who must be in his 80's. He has a thick swiss accent, but that only makes sense considering the name of the store! During my discussion with Fred, I found out that he started working with meat in the mid 60's. He started the Matterhorn Meat Shop in 1975 and has been doing it ever since. He told me that he got into the business because he enjoyed doing it, not because of the money! I was excited to try a get a feel for the quality here, so I decided to trying a little bit of several items: Jerky ($16/95/lb): Very good. He keeps it frozen, but it's been great once it's thawed. It's a bit on the thicker side, but I'd get some again. Jerky is always expensive, but this seemed pretty reasonable. Gothaer Zervelat - It's basically a german salami. It's an oblong shape and has a pretty good smoke flavor to it. If you're into salami, try some of this! Knockwurst - I haven't tried it yet, but I'm told that its the swiss version of a hot dog. It looks similar to a brat. Spicy Sausage - A bit milder than I would like, but delicious! Mild Sausage - Delightful! A fairly standard sausage, but worth trying. Landjaeger - Its quite a bit different that the other ones that I've had. Based on my experience here, I can't imagine that this is anything but 100% authentic. They are pretty big, but the flavor is mild and worth trying. Bring cash - I'm not sure if he accepts credit cards or not. I think that his register is the same one that he had in 1975, which is awesome! My only regret is that I didn't discover the Matterhorn Meat Shop earlier. This is undoubtedly on it's way to becoming one of my favorite shops around!

They specialize in sheep and goats milk varieties and over time have honed the craft to near perfection! At present they have around 10 varieties that include sheep and goat choices as well as soft and firm cheeses. Our favorites have been the Calypso - a firmer cheese aged 4 months, made with hops and washed with local beer - as well as the Black Pearl - a soft cheese with an ash rubbed rind. They also come out with smaller batch cheeses periodically! The current one we've got waiting in the fridge is the "Velvet" - one made with some pear brandy! Pretty stoked for that one. Once per year they have an "open farm" where people are able to come out to the homestead and check the place out! The menagerie of animals is lovely. They have tons of sheep and goats, including a number of little ones that the kiddos were able to feed. Baby goats can take down a bottle like no ones business! The cows, pigs, ducks, chickens and geese made for some great "what sounds does this animal make?" game. The animals are all very well taken care of and the amount of grazing is pretty impressive! We also learned about how the community came together to fund rebuilding their barn after a fire last year. The folks in the area feel this place is important enough to really put their money behind it! The barn was recently finished and is fantastic! This is an amazing small business run by two ladies who care deeply about the area, their animals and their products. It's a place we will continue to support and one that we're super stoked to have in town!

I literally want to lick my fingers clean after even handling this cheese and my only regret is any spillage from this gooey deliciousness. 5 star addition to the farmers market in Yakima and a reason to show up on Sundays.
